Title: St Johns Church Belfast?
Post by: James Swan on Thursday 02 September 10 17:32 BST (UK)
Hi I am looking to trace the origonal church records of the Marriage of my Great Grandparents

James Swan and Rebecca Ellen Johnston who married on the 15th July 1922

The only information I have is that they where married in St John's Church, Belfast.

I have spoken to the various pastors and they confirmed that they have no records to match my request. I have checked st Johns Malone, St John's at newtownbreda and St
Johns falls road.

Im not to sure if the name has changed or if there are any other St Johns in Belfast.

Would appreciate any information or help at all in this matter

St John's, Laganbank, Church of Ireland. Was told their records are at St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast.
Don't know if they are as I never got round to finding out.
Regards,
Dixie

Hi.
Should have included the fact that St John's C.o.I., Laganbank, Belfast, no longer exists. From what I can make out it's been gone for over 60 years.

There are several Church of Ireland Churches dedicated to St John in Belfast:-

St John's, Whitehouse/Shore Road (opened 1841)
St John's, Malone (1842)
St John the Evangelist, Laganbank (1853 - moved to Orangefield/Castlereagh Rd in 1937)
St John the Baptist, Stewartstown Road (1859)

As you see the Laganbank church has just moved location and all are still in operation.

Malone and Orangefield/Laganbank marriage records for 1922 are still held in the churches, St John the Baptist records for that period are in PRONI (but inaccessible during their move) but Whitehouse records are on microfilm at Cregagh library and looks like the only one you haven't tried yet.

I would suggest you might like to check the civil record of this marriage at https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/search/marriage where on payment of a small fee you will be able to obtain full details. I have confirmed the record of James Swan to a Johnston on 15/07/1922 is on this site but payment is required for detailed information.

Good Luck

Brendan
