Hiya... I have run into a brick wall now and would love some help if anybody has got a bit of spare time!
I am having trouble finding the correct year and Location of death for my Great Grandad George Henry Jones...
I went a grave today at Acton Church, Cheshire, His name is on the Grave side with his wife's and daughters but he wasnt buried there and there was no cremation, there is also no record of him passing away in Cheshire..
The grave says 11th October 1914
He was born about 1871... I don't know where???
He married an Elizabeth Williams 16th May 1894 at St Martins Shropshire.... they had 11 Known children
His fathers name is Fredrick Jones
George and his Wife Elizabeth lived and worked on a Canal boat called Gladys between 1901 and 1911 on the Shropshire canal...
George's grave says 11th October 1914
I am desperate to find George's Birth location? and George's Death year and location??
also are there any resources for Shropshire Canal's?? History, photos etc
Thanks

Have you checked the 1901/1911 census for this family?
-
Hi yes checked both census's...the 1901 said he was born in Wales and the 1911 said he was born in Oswestry but can't find any records of this...
I can't find him on any other census pre 1901...
On there marriage certificate it says he was living in Whittington Shropshire in 1894

Wow! Thank you where did you find this??
-
As he died in October 1914,have you considered that he was serving in WW1 and died abroad?
-
I asked my Mum.. she said he died at Bunce's Cottages, Barbridge nr Nantwich, Cheshire... I just don't get it! If he died at that address but no record of his death??
-
This might seem a daft question, you say his name is on the gravestone, how do you know hes not buried there? :-\

Hi
Re the Shropshire Union Canal/ Llangollen Canal
I was born and brought up in this area and have often walked along the towpaths in my youth - it used to be a regular Sunday afternoon walk when we were young.
There is lots of info, photos and videos on this canal system if you Google.
Here's a small photo that we took many years ago looking down on the aquaduct at Chirk
(http://www.ancestral-tales.co.uk/assets/images/autogen/a_C01.jpg)
and a map of the places mentioned :

Canal is marked in blue with bits sticking out ;D

Is there any chance the year of George's death on the family grave could be incorrect?
If so, Free BMD has a death of a George H Jones, age 45, registered Nantwich Dec Q 1919 vol 8a page 372. It might be worth contacting the local registrar to check the occupation of this deceased?

Good find, Heather. A 4 and 9 might look very similar with certain carving styles

Can I just turn up at the registrar's and ask for the info about him??
It depends on the Cheshire Central registrar and their checking policy. Some will do it if they have time or some will expect you to order the certificate. Some are very helpful and will even help over the phone if you have the reference already and a credit card handy. Have you asked for their help looking for the death in 1914 previously?
From Cheshire BMD it appears that the local reference for this death is NA/37/082.

Hiya I went to registrar yesterday in Crewe, I decided to go for the 1919 death.. They said that they wouldnt charge me if it was wrong it cost £9 which is bit cheaper... Will update you the results when it arrives...

Hello..... :)
It is really good you managed to get a copy of the correct certificate.....I came across your post whilst looking for canals and canal boat people - mine were Derbyshire canal folk.
It is puzzle re the grave....looked on the pilotsearch site and found a few burials on there that have helped me.
It does have your George Henry Jones on there with a burial date that would tie in to the death date of 4th of October....so I wonder what's going on?
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
George Henry Jones - burial date 8th Oct 1919 - place Acton (Near Nantwich), Cheshire.

Hi
I had a grave stone like that - the stone mason had misread or written down the instructions wrongly. I think it's not all that uncommon :-\
