Is there any way to find out who a Father is apart from what is stated on a Birth Certificate? Relative relatives no longer with us.
May seem like a stupid question, but in a family search we have unearthed a mystery.....this would be in 1941
-
If his name is on the birth cert - and the birth was 1941 - if the mother lied when reporting the birth, there is no other way of determing any other father
This was during WW2 so info on birth certs was dependant on what was given if the husband was serving in the war

a married womans husband was . is regarded to be the father of her child even if that was / is not the case
sometimes when a child was chirstened the vicar / curate etc. would put a note in the margin of the reputed fathers name if it was known, i have seen a bp. entry for a child where the mother is Elizabeth and the vicar / curate says she say the fatehr is her husband but he cannot be as he has been away serving (or at Sea) for a year!
(or words to that effect)

CarolW & toni*....'tis as I thought in your replies, a dead end.....the birth certificate says husband name as Father, but his occupation is wrong?
So I guess we will never know ??? ::)
-
That may be the occupation he was doing at the time of the childs birth unless it was a skilled occupation or the one he should have been doing was skilled
I have usually worked in an office but not being able to find office work I took a care job I got carried away celebrating getting the care job 9 months after I started my care job I had a baby and for my occupation I put down carer although in fact my usual basis has been office work.

The Occupation put down for Father was Army Clerical - And the Husband was only ever in Navy.............but Husbands name used as Father(he was at Sea in Wartime!!!)

They did get leave from the services from time to time,as they do now!

I know, I married a Sailor myself ;)
But this birth has always had a mystery about it, all the more so now.....although I believe 'we' already know the answer ::)
It is not my birth
