I don't think I've seen this posted before so might it be interesting to know how we all found our way to Rootchat?
Me ...................... a fellow researcher sent me a link to a post which she thought may be of interest to me - little did she know what she was getting me into ::)

it don,t really matter how we found it but its a great site ;D
-
For the life of me I can't remember.
I probably saw a reference to it on some other site, but as it was the first forum I joined,(since then ScotlandsPeople [now defunct] and GenesReunited [now less interesting]) I just don't know where.
But, as Graceland says:
it don,t really matter how we found it but its a great site ;D
I'll drink to that !! ;D ;D
-
On google search engine .
I can't remember what exactly I was searching for, whether a name of one of my rellies or a general genealogy query I was looking for . I just stumbled across this site by pure accident. I'm hooked , it's the best for helpfullness and friendliness
:)
-
I got in contact with a distant relative through a Mailing List last autumn and he recommended I look at Rootschat where he'd posted some info of a common ancestor - the rest, as they say, is history. Been hanging around here ever since ;D ;D

I'm not really sure because I originally joined the site in January 2004. But I think I was just Googling and found it by accident!!! I didn't use it much in the early days, but from last September I've been hooked :D
One of the best "accidents" to happen to me ;D

Hi,
I found it by travelling along wee back roads and rough Irish country lanes. I came through many Irish townlands http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/ - 12k Irish Townland Search. I found 5 places starting with " Root ", three ending in " hat " threw in " sc " for super chat and arrived here . It has to be an Irish townland. I've never met so many people with the gift of the gab. Have all of yez kissed the Blarney Stone ?

I was bored and completely fed up. I typed in a general search for genealogy in the hope that a site I hadn't seen before would pop up and answer all my questions. Guess what? It did ROOTSCHAT.
Funny, I don't seem to get bored or fed up anymore!

::) ::) ::)
I was googling one day and up came RootsWeb, which I didn't want, however, underneath was Rootschat - I clicked on that out of curiousity, and hey presto, what a lucky find it turned out to be !
::) ::) ::)
-
I think I saw it mentioned in a magazine article and being nosey, at a loose end and surrounded by family tree brick walls thought I'd have a look!
I'm still nosey....less often at a loose end...but have knocked down monumental brick walls all with the help of Rootschat!!
So if you don't mind, I'll keep coming back! ;D

I saw mention of it in a newspaper article about a teenager who had started tracing his family tree. The rest is (family) history! :)

I'm almost certain that I found rootschat by accident, it's the best accident I've ever had including the 2 sat behind me ;) :)
-
Like a lot of others i was bored and my brickwalls were just getting higher and like magic rootschat just appeared ,so i had a mooch about and wasnt impressed at all because the first few posts i read were basically a slanging match between two rootschatters then it got more intresting and i got more intrested and the rest as Paul(he says ;Dbowing at the mention of his name these days)says his history

I was googling around one day and typed in my birth towns name and up popped a question someone was asking on Rootschat.
I thought hey-up I know the answer to that ;D.........and thats how I got here.

Recommended by a fellow researcher who I now discover is a 'veteran' chatter. Great site wish I'd found it sooner.

Someone named Ann who kept posting all over Rootsweb and British-Genealogy (the forum for Archives CD Books). I figured I would check it out. :)
-
I happened to be talking to another researcher on MSN, and he mentioned that he had put a couple of posts up on rootschat, and as I'm curious by nature,I decided to check it out, it's now listed in my favourites, and its now become an addiction, that I can't afford not to have. Not only is it a great site,it saves my sanity, knowing that others can have the same problems and rewards, with the click of a mouse.
-
I was bored with my ancestors after the first week of ancestry.com and didn't have the gump to order certificates from the UK to further my research (wither) ... so, I looked on other genealogy message boards for someone that I might help.
Well, I found someone named Joe... and sent an email with some information. It turned out that I didn't help Joe... Instead, Joe helped me with a link to this site.
Now, I am never bored AND I have ordered many certificates! Thank you Joe!

I went into my profile clicked the link at the bottom that says "Show the last posts of this person." Then I clicked on my first page..... Now I remember.....I did a google for Rosscommon..and I'm still looking.:D

I had this site recommended to me by a distant relative in Canada (she found me by letter) and like we say the rest is history. Brilliant site Sarah & Trystan Thanks
Matty ;D
-
I think it was through Google. I was getting very frustrated with my HUGHES in Llandudno research (10% of the town has that name!) and I think it Googled it's way to me exactly 1 year and 15 days ago.
Some folks on the OU Family History group had mentioned it but not taken to it :-\ but I hadn't got round to visiting.
I don't know when I'm up for parole? ;D

Hi everyone,
I found Rootschat via search engine while looking for lost relies from Northampton/Leicester. Superb site and folks are so helpful. :)

I found Rootschat by sheer accident, can't even remember what I was looking for on Google ??? I can safely say I have never looked back. I have made so many wonderful new friends from all over the world. Thanks for introducing us Trystan and Sarah ;)

I found it by mistake - the best and most rewarding mistake ever!! And I should know - I make a lot of them!!! At least I can now put them down to 'senior moments!'

I found rootschat via research on the web and google hits. Dropped in a few times but did not register. Did register the other day though and I am on most nights either chatting or browsing the posts. Great community very helpful and we all find ancestors! :) :)
-
I was just googling around for online census' and found this place by accident. ;D
-
Out for a drink one night and bumped into an old friend and discovered we had a common intrest and he told me about rootschat.
I could not believe people would be so kind as to help you via look ups and general advice all for free
-
Cant quite remember, I think it was through Google!! I am sure glad I did, it is the best site ever, with the most helpful and nicest people!!
Thanks and regards to everyone who has kindly helped me over the past year!
Kind regards
Hoppity.
-
I was on a message board on Genealogy.com, asking questions, and someone directed me to Rootschat, saying there were very kind people here who did lookups.
Well! One of the best pieces of advice I've ever had. I am constantly stunned by the kindness of strangers here. Of course I don't think of them as strangers any more - they are part of my Rootschat family! ;D
I don't have access to censuses, etc, but I do try to help beginners with queries to which I know the answers, and have done some translation from French for a fellow Rootschatter. But you have to be quick off the mark! Many times I've logged on, seen a post and thought, "I can help", but someone has beaten me to it! :D ;D

Ive been such a wimp with Internet sites in the past, but after looking at this site I felt free to ask questions and make mistakes knowing I wouldnt be made to feel foolish. So thank you Rootschat.
Sheldon.

I "met" up with a second cousin via Genesconnected, the only contact I've ever had through them in the almost three years I've been on there.
After we had been e mailing a little while he told me about this site.
I have had so much help on here over the past year or so with my Bedfordshire line I can't believe it.
It's a wonderful site. :) :) :)
-
I put a request for help on Channel 4 Teletext for my elusive grandmother Elizabeth Violet Everett.
One kind gentleman who answered my request did several lookups for me and after a few emails told me to have a look on the Rootschat site.
I had a look around for a couple of weeks, liked what I saw, then put my request into Beginners.
I often wonder who he is, as I only knew his Christian name, and if he recognises himself from the information I've given then..........a big thank you!
I still haven't found my grandmothers birth but have solved quite a few other problems to do with other branches of the families trees.
I have also learned that I'm not the only person who gets a buzz from finding out information for myself and others.............so much so that I have kicked the smoking habit after 50 years!!!
There's not enough time to smoke and RootsChat!!! and the latter gives me a bigger buzz!!
Sue
-
Gee whiz, Sue,
I haven't heard of genealogy as a cure for nicotine addiction before!!! Maybe you should publicise this more widely, patent it or something! ;D
I have a couple of those elusive ones, too. Good luck with yours!

I found it why searching family history on yahoo. what a great site jim
-
Pure & Wonderful LUCK!!! :D I had Googled my husband's family name search, and saw this site....It was new to me, so I happily added it to my list of Gen. search bookmarks, came onto it.....and Presto!!!!
Here were people who came to my rescue immediately! ;) You know who you are you wonderful people!!! ;) (and for free, for goodness sakes...I had just paid a handsome sum for 4 censuses... and am still waiting after 3 weeks for a document to cross the pond... ::) I know it would have been faster had they put the message in a bottle!!!!! ;D Many HUGE hugs all around....for being here!!!!!!!! J.J.
P.S. be careful in the chatroom, Newbies....they'll tease you in there!!!! The Rotters!!!
Might just drop in for a tease right now! Ha, ha....( and Wee might bring you Teas)
-
As with so many others it was a GOOGLE accident - but what an accident! This is without doubt the best site ever...and I can't believe how good you all are...
I have already told everyone I know (who will listen - so maybe not that many) all about it!
Julie :D

Someone plugged it on a popular genealogy message board. I'm glad they did! :)

Paul sent us a message on Genes Reunited about one of my wife's ancestors in relation to June 2005 RootsChat challenge.
I followed the link (and forgot to reply to his question - sorry Paul). I gave it a go, and came back at the weekend for another go.
Heather B turned round a bunch of my Nottinghamshire enquiries within a few hours, and I got the bug. I also nabbed some web space and converted my family history book to a web site.
Many hands make light work. Resources and talents are shared. And the whole tone of the site is constructive and friendly.
All this in about six weeks!

Hello to you All,
The people seem friendly, they don't bite, and have supplied information to my requests with such speed that I am still trying to get my head around what I have received.
I did try to return the favor to someone as I did infact know the answer ;D, I thought that I was quick, but I need to get a second computer to do the search while I type the answer out..............fast, they left me standing ;D
I will no doubt return with alot more questions which I hope and know will be answered.
Many Thanks to all those people in advance, there will be alot !!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

This site was recommeded to me by a friend who had just started to research her family history. I hadn't really started tracing my family until I used Rootschat, but in the short time I have been researching I have got quite far back on all sides of my family, with the help of Rootschat. ;)

I've been trying to work out how to put my family tree on to my website and was on the Family Historian User Group site and Rootschat webspace was regularly being recomended. Well I found the site and I've been so busy looking at the really useful help and advice on every kind of topic, I haven't had chance to look at the website thing! Guess one thing all us family researchers have is patience so I know I'll get there someday. :)

Welcome AnjiM!
It's a wonderful rush when you first join RootsChat - all these different skills/talents, and loads of helpful people. Within a month of joining I had my family history site up and running - there's loads of advice on this subject on this board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,292.0.html, and in particular lots of examples to look at as listed on this post - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,23896.0.html
I'm sure you'll continue to get a lot of out of RootsChat.

Well I am new so I know how I found it - I had been searching for ages for one ancestor - bought birth and death certs which turned out not to be him. I could only find him on two census years - one he said he was from Birkenhead and the previous one he said Altrinhcam! Eventually Altrincham turned out to be the one - he was born in 1850. So I finally had confirmation of father's name and occupation mathcing the marriage cert.
A kind contact researching the same name (different person no family connection) posted a look up request for 1851 census . Another very kind rootschatter posted the reply and suddenly I had a host of new ancestors. The jigsaw puzzle fitted together perfectly.
Brilliant - I joined in and saw what lovely people chat here and now I am an incurable addict - I rush home from work to see what new posts have appeared. Hope I can be as helpful to someone else one day.
-
Welcome Cedas,
We are so very lucky to have such wonderful hosts, Sarah and Trystan...and what a terrific site they have built for us. I share your enthusiasm, as I have been helped so much and am loving trying to help others. What a blessing to have so many people of like mind all ending up in one forrum. Thanks to the moderators, too who give even more of their time... and who really stay on top of things!!!
All the best! J.J.

I found it quite by accident as I was looking for something else. I am still new to the site, and haven't quite got the hang of the chat room ??? But enjoy checking every day to see if some one has been able to help me or me help someone else. :)

Within 20 minutes of posting a reply asking about an ancester on the Scilly Isle of St. Marys I had my first reply. Within 2 hours I had received 23 replies which gave me so much correct info and much, much more that I was amazed at all the generous help. That was my 2nd effort at asking. Thank you to all those kind and helpful Rootschatters. SHOWERS

I'd also like to add a big 'thank you' to the many sweethearts on here who have always been so willing to help me. It's so greatly appreciated, thank you all very much indeed.
There have been times I've wanted to give up and you have given me the boost I needed to keep plugging away at it... Never mind 'how', I'm just so glad that I found RootsChat. :)
-
Like most people I was directed via a search engine (probably google), - Thank goodness. I was floundering around in a sea of cut short family lines, all now much extened and much due to Rootschat. I now tell every other family-hunter connection I make to getr signed up.
Cheers guys,

i am not really sure, after 6 years of going around in circles on sites that made no sense or could offer any relatives i stumbled on this site. it is an amazing site and if i never find a relative - living or dead i will still be part of a really great family right here. Thanks guys.

My cousin in Taz. Sent it to me as an email link.
I've been browsing for a while now and decided to register this afternoon,
Looks good.

Well, a hearty Rootschat welcome to you too Salamanda - the more the merrier!! :D

I rang my uncle for his birthday (he was 80 and is my main source of family history) and when he asked me if any of the 5 men called Guy at Trafalgar were our ancestors, and I couldnt answer, I googled my great grandfather's name, and came up with a cousin I didnt know I had (ggf married twice, we never knew) in Canada, looking for rellies on here. Most amazing luck, what a great site!!
Diane
-
Wow Diane!
A very warm welcome. What a brilliant way of finding your way to RC :D
That is the beauty of a site like this, old posts still come up in searches on Google. If you look at the poster's profile you get an idea if they are still active which helps manage expectations.
I hope you find many more connections :)

As a fairly new researcher I came across Rootschat by accident. I was completely blocked on some family lines and posted some questions. What amazed me was that within minutes I had received all sorts of replies and my advance with my family history was incredible. I then decided to subscribe to Ancestry.co.uk in order to try and complete my researches but am only too happy to make look-ups fpr other people. The friendliness of the people has been phenomenal.
Regards
Geoff

I found this website via Googling one of the family names I'm researching and was amazed at just how big this website is! I've only been on a couple of times in the last few days but have already seen loads of information that I can use. I already subscribe to GeneReunited and have found that a very useful website too. The people on here seem very friendly and looks like I'm going to have fun and hopefully find even more members of my family tree.

Also via Google, like all my best discoveries!

I found this site yesterday whilst 'googling' for geneology forums. Couldn't find anyhing i liked until i noticed a comment about 'Rootschat'. I liked what i found.
I've been searching for my Welsh ancestors but am relatively new to this game. Looking for Hughes and Evans in Wales is like trying to walk through treacle!!
I'm determined to persevere though and everything i've read on here so far encourages me a lot.
I've already told one of my daughters about this site, she is looking back on her fathers side.
So---Hello all. Polidor. :)
-
Hello and welcome Polidor
Good luck with your Welsh research, afriad I can't help you there as my lot seem to have stuck to England. Now if you branch off into London at some point ... ;D
Cheers

Hello Polidor

Thanks for the welcome.
I began my search by joining Genes Reunited. A relative living in New Zealand got in touch and has opened a couple more doors for me. A lovely photo copy of my mother's grandparents was a very pleasant surprise and also a copy of my own grandparent's marriage lines. I sometimes wish i was looking for relatives with a surname that began with 'Z' but am ploughing on regardless!!!!!.
-
Hi all
Talking to someone else interested in family history and they recommended this site. I'd never heard of it, but browsed around and liked what I saw, so joined up. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. I'm totally hooked.
As I live in a rural area, and it's not always easy to get to major libraries or other resource centres. This has been a godsend. :D :D
Cheers, C
-
Welcome to you both, Polidor and Ceebut!!! ;D ;D
Post your queries on the appropriate country or county boards and you will get a lot of help!
But be warned. This site is addictive! Once you get on, it's hard to get off!!!

Rootschat was brought to my attention by a member (Brian1968). I found the site difficult to begin with but after some advice from other members I soon became proficient. I seem to get more pleasure by helping other people with their research requests than I do with my own.

i was stuck on something and looked through a mag for help and
out popped this site.i loged on and felt right at home.

Found whilst surfing for geneaolgy sites.
Felt guilty at first at getting someone else do my research, but now love the way I can help others as well as get help when I am really stuck.
Find rootschat people the friendliest and most helpful on the net.

Wonderful to see newer members slottiing right into the helpful mode! Goodonya, Jayson and Sharpie!!!! ;D ;D ;D
My problem always is, when I think "Ah yes, I can help this person", three other people have jumped in first!! You have to be quick!! ;D
Anyway, watch out, you'll become a Rootschataholic like the rest of us!

-
I'm already there My husband says ours could be the first divorce where the internet is cited as co-respondent, I hope he's joking!
Does RC fund solicitors?
Janet
-
That didn't take long, Janet!! ;D ;D ;D
Only thing I can suggest is getting another computer and encouraging your husband to get interested in something on the Net! That way, you might stave off divorce a while longer! (No solicitors, I'm afraid!!)

Hello All,
Like some other RC'ers, came vie Genereunited. Got some advice, had a look around, still going round, and round, can't get off, (don't want to). The only problem I have found is , keep finding other Boards, and Threads, my own research has suffered. Being on the other side of the Irish Sea, not all things are as easy as in the mainland.
Glad to get help & glad to give help, keep up the good work.

I've no idea, but can we sue them ;D
Bee :D
Hear, hear, Bee! Libellous and untrue, that remark is!! >:( Probably judging us by their own standards!!! :)

I was looking for a support group for carers and put the word chat in the search engine....I wondered what this was...started exploring...found the chat room!
Found my support group and made huge strides with my family tree.
Thanks Rootschat!

Hi everyone,
I found this site by accident but am I glad I did! In the week I've been registered I've found my grandad(who with a name like John Jones was a problem) thanks to the military experts on the site and had good advice about other topics. Not living in England means I can't just drop into the local records office and being quite new to genealogy means tha
-
Hi everyone.
Found by chance and aren't I glad! In a week I've learned more about my family and genealogy in general than in the past few months since I started this quest.
The people on here are knowledgeable, friendly and MODEST. I haven't been made to feel stupid or inadequate because I don't know very much.
Internet is a wonderful thing for people like me living abroad. Keep up the good work.

I, quite literally, stumbled across it earlier today. Now if I could find my way into RootsChatter, I'd be happy. I have a lot of questions. ???
-
Hi Cheffings and welcome to rootschat, you will find that members here are most helpful and where possible will give you answers to your questions. If they don't know the answer then they usually have a link to something (or someone) that can help. Don't just restrict your self to the chat room though and have a whizz around the different boards you maybe suprised at what you find.

I think I found this site just by searching for info. I really dont remember how I found these pages. But I do know I am fairly sure just by reading some posts and members info I have most likely found some distant rellies in Australia. For which I'm fairly rapt about. But more on that as time avails. ;)
-
No, I don't remember how I got here either but since I did Rootschat has given me hours of delight. Interesting questions asked and answered, caption competitions, wonderful photos - you name it Rootschat has it.
dwali summed it up by saying it ' feels like home ' and it's great that there are members from all around the world.... thanks Rootschat .
-
Couldn't agree more Emmeline ;D ;D
Now remind me 'what did I do with my spare time before RC??' ;D

I was just finding how to find other members making the same tree as me and I stumbled onto a family making the Maghie family
I have been stuck on Rootschat ever since and come on it every day
I cannot be without all the people who want to help
Elizabeth
-
the day I found Rootschat? can't really remember..but it was certainly one of my best moves - I've found so many great people here. When I was starting out on my tree I asked many 'dumb' questions as I did not know any better, but I was never given the feeling 'oh, no another one....' and now am in a position to help others. The wheel turns....

Not sure how I found it as I have just about exhausted every genealogy site available in my attempts to find the elusive Farrells. I haven't been here for a while, but have once again got the "genealogy bug" so I am looking forward to some browsing on the boards once more. (Great site)

Hi, Jonesy...welcome to rootschat....Just had a look at your older postings, and see that with more specific information, you will get more specific results....Now that you've been away from them for a year....just go into your own profile and read all your posts, and add new replies with a specific question...and you will get results on many, i am sure...this lot are really super and you will be nothing short of amazed ( use exact names, middle names also if you have them, and year of birth, etc.... I noticed one query has no name on it at all....and it looks to be an interesting query when you add the information needed)
Happy New Year you wonderful bunch of rootchatters!!!!
J.J. ;) :D ;D

Can't remember for the life of me.
But isn't it just like so many rambles down genealogical alleyways on the internet?... Afterwards, you have no idea how you got there, but it seems like you couldn't possibly have lived without it before?

Hi
I found Rootschat via my husband. I do spend lot of time in the Chatroom - if you haven't been in and are stuck with something do come in. They have been a great help to me. Done loads of lookups and provided lots of links.

Hello there ;D
Well I found Rootschat completely by Accident last Wednesday !! I was googling, got sent here and havent been away since !!! (ask my poor husband lol)
I can honestly say that within a week I have found out more than in the past couple of months and purely by the kindness and willingness of the people here to help others, and I hope that I too will be able to help others search.

Hello,
I found rootschat via a recommendation on the Your Family Tree Magazine web forum.
I had a problem posting a new topic in a forum, and was made to feel very welcome in the chat room. :)
A great website! :)
-
Hello, focus! And a big, warm Rootschat welcome to you!
You'll find a home here amongst the 40,000 members (not all of whom are active at once, thankfully - as least as far as keeping the site speedy, is concerned!)
Your Family Tree is a great magazine, and it's forum seems to share (and achieve) the same aspirations as Rootschat, so it's nice to see you with a foot in both. Quite a few YFT members also post here at Rootschat, and vice versa.
cheers

How did I get here "I suppose that is the ultimate question. Well my partner (Prophetess) grab me by the hair and dragged me into "her" chat room to meet her friends. Well that was a wee while ago have finally managed to drag myself away from the chat room to look at the messages, she released me to put Mug Shots on, and found this.
What A magnificient site this is and how do I get this new part of my family onto my tree.

It is full of very helpful and friendly people. ;D

Around January this year I googled my grandmothers name in an idle moment, not expecting to find anything. I got to rootschat and saw a photo of grandma staring back at me! Used as tag picture by a rellie I had never heard of. Hooked from then on, that is what started me on the family history trail. 7 months now and I'm coming to the point where I need to get up and do serious digging, rather than just online searches. Eek! :o

I saw reference to Rootschat on another site & out of curiousity logged on . Exploring the site I stumbled onto Chatterbox today . I was literally dragged in , by the most wonderful people( dare I mention names? (M)grub, bally & sdbadger), who asked did I have any problem , I replied ' I do actually '! Within minutes I was overwhelmed with information of my forebears I dont think I could have ever have achieved on my own . I cannot express my gratitude sufficiently to these people & this site . I've just got to tell the world. Ron Hamilton, N.Z.

Contacted a gentleman for a tree I found on GenesReunited. We spoke on the telephone, and in conversation he asked if I had come across rootschat - he said the help he had received had far outweighed the help he had found anywhere else, on any other site.
Have to say I agree wholeheartedly. And, the bonus is its free as well!
Have recommended it to my friends, relatives and family history society.

I only joined this morning and last night, a friend passed me this
forum's name onto me, so I googled it and I saved the site's

I started researching into my rather big family's tree/genealogy
work/hobby.
They consist mainly of the Franklin's, Samuel's, Waley's, Jessels
and Montagu's too.
It has kept me busy ever since I started this
about 4 months ago, Every day more of less.

Hi Rosalind, and welcome to rootschat. Do not forget that once you have spun around the boards have a look in at the chat room where members can also help out (sometimes, it seems instantly). It can be a bit daunting going in there for the first time but once you get used to it, it does become easier. Enjoy your time on here as the natives don't bite ;D and are very friendly.

MarieC thanks for that helpful information but the details I am after
concern a 36 year old. So what does a child board have to do with the
World War 1?
-
Rosalind,
"Child" board means that it is a sub-board of a main subject board - in this case, the Armed Forces Board! It has nothing to do with children!
Take a look at the main page of Rootschat, the index board with all the boards listed on it, and you'll see what I mean. It's a good idea to have a thorough browse around Rootschat and familiarise yourself with its layout.

wow, I have been doing gen and message boards for 14 years and had never heard of that word.

thanks for your reply but I live in London. Which is turning

Hi,
I found it by travelling along wee back roads and rough Irish country lanes. I came through many Irish townlands http://www.thecore.com/seanruad - 12k Irish Townland Search. I found 5 places starting with " Root ", three ending in " hat " threw in " sc " for super chat and arrived here . It has to be an Irish townland. I've never met so many people with the gift of the gab. Have all of yez kissed the Blarney Stone ?
I loved this post! lol. I cant remember how I found my way here! I have no sense of direction. But leastways, I found my way back. Its the best site I've been on. ;D

I was told about on the www.bbc.co.uk/history/

hard to remember how I was told, probably was referred to it in one of my searches many moons ago. :)

Found my way here via another message board. First post and not sure I shall be particularly prolific but I need lots of help as I'm still pretty new to all this family tree business!

Welcome, squirrelinatree!
This is a wonderful site and I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as the rest of us! Feel free to post your queries on the relevant boards - there are a lot of people who will help you! :D

-
I found a reference to rootschat on another board and 'googled'. People are generally helpful but it can be frustrating to post and get no replies ;D Even a 'sorry I can't help you but have you tried ...' would be helpful to newcomers. That is just an observation not a criticism ;D ;D
Joy
-
Yes Joy, I'm sure it's frustrating! I always try to answer any unanswered post I come across, even if I can't help much, for just this reason! These are in the minority though, to be fair. In the past, I have sometimes posted a request for help and had a reply within a couple of minutes! :o :o
MarieC
-
I was given the URL by a fellow researcher over the microfiche parish records in my local library :)
-
Can,t remember how but 4 years ago threw in a query for a family in Oz. Completely forgot the whole thing till Jan. this year and got an answer from a 3rd. cousin. Since then I,ve been using RC fast and furious. Even found another 3 rd cousin in Oz. They didn,t know about one another, but have met up now and going great guns gathering info. I have a big family down under, at least 400 or so and all thanks to RC for helping me find them.
I must agree with Joy though, it,s frustrating never getting a reply to a query. Though on the whole I,ve been extremly lucky.
Cheers. Mary.

I had googled a place name, church actually, and up came a personal family history website where some of the people had been married in the same church and the owner of the website had posted a potted history of the church. Included on the site were some restored photographs by the folks here on Rootschat so I thought I'd take a look..........................
-
How did I find it? Simple - I followed mum here [Trees]!

HI everyone,
I was told about rootschat by my husbands cousin. We have never met her or spoken before but now we cant seem to stop chatting. Its fantastic and we have learned loads about the family by sharing info.

I was browsing the net one evening and put one my names into Google to see what came up and one of the links was Rootschat???...Rootschat who's that, I suppose as far as I am concerned the rest is history, whats the phrase

I can only thank all the people who have help me so far and a special THANK YOU to the founders of this site.......

Well, someone on the WDYTYA message board posted a link - and that was only a few days ago!
I wish I'd know about rootschat years ago. I can't believe how friendly, helpful and knowledgeable people are!
It's brilliant :)

I found it by google, but that does not matter,so far I have found it to be one of the most helpfull sites on the net, and yes Christopher I have kissed the Blarney stone on a trip to Ireland about 10 years ago, I was worried that the two mad Irishmen holding my legs would let go.

For the life of me I can't remember - age thing maybe? but I joined and then forgot I had - definitely an age thing then eh?? :-[ :-[
Some very helpful, friendly people on here, great site.

A friend recently took it upon herself to start my family tree.
It was something I had always wanted to do, but never knew where to start.
She has now passed her gained information over to me - along with Rootschat address.
I don't know where she got it from - but I am glad she found you.

I stumbled upon Rootschat when a search engine (Yahoo) brought me here. One of the posters has the same surname as one that I was researching. :)

Hello,

root can also mean sex...
sexchat???
I do not know where or when this 'slang' originated.
-
Hiya Wildtwin
Thats a new one on me - dont think that particular bit of slang has crossed the ocean yet. No wonder your partner did a double take lol
Willow x
-
Hi Willow, Wild twin is right some slang words certainly do have other connotations, particularly in this part of the world, which reminds me of another recent topic about accents,

Hi, we were in a good website which closed unfortunately but over the months members & friends have been saying, they've joined Rootschat. Can't mention who they are of course ;) but thought why not join the party.
Already been welcomed by the way, seems there's a lot of nice friendly and helpful people on here. :)

Hi, I found you today just by surfing the web for a name I was looking for to do with my family tree...there's so much on here to look at, I haven't enough eyes to do it....you all sound very friendly and happy on here :) I'm looking forward to having a good look around the site, I think I will be here for hours ::)
-
my niece in redcar told me about " rootschat ". it is a really good site that you don't want to log out of it. ::) i have been in most of the threads but still have lots more to visit. you don't log in for a half hour you are in for 2/3 hours, then you wonder where the time went. ???
you post a query and before you know it an answer to it is on the screen. very nice people or do they prefer "rootchatters ". ;D
-
well
I had just googled my relations name and then hey presto his name was on there and it bought me to this site
Shame I cant find the post or who posted it >:( because it looked like we had a link!!!!
great site and a very friendly bunch :D
-
Several people mentioned Rootschat to me firstly from the BBC's Family tree board but others as well.
Also I've mentioned Rootschat to some friends who are doing their own Family Tree researches.
Does this messageboard have anything to with subjects like the
"SoE" Special Operations Executive as I have heard of it and have just come across a distant late relative who was in the SoE a spy wow
-
Welcome to rootschat all those that have found the site recently.
RosalindElsie............ if you post on the Armed Forces Board you may find someone who can help/advise you on the S.O.E. aspect of your research.

What a shame! Do you want to post the name so we can all try to find the post?

I found Rootschat through Google 5 years ago. I joined in September 2004 and have been a member of Rootschat for 5 years nearly. I love Rootschat, it is probably one of the best genealogy forums on the internet.
-
I am just so glad that I found RC. If only our unhappy world operated with the same philosophy and friendliness how wonderful it would be. To all at RC I send my very best regards.

I was totally dumbfounded when I found a rellie was a 'Lighterman'.
I googled 'Lghtermen' and a Rootschat link appeared....mmmm just what I was looking for ;D
-
I can't remember how I found my way to Roots Chat. But I have been wandering around it for a while now....
Haven't had any results to my ancestory posts yet, though...
But, who knows, someday someone might just wander in and be surprised to see that there is someone out there with the same ancestors..
Might be shock to them !! :o :o :o :o :o
LMAO!
-
Haven't had any results to my ancestory posts yet, though
Put another post on each one (call it refresh or something) so that they show up again in the 'unread posts' list. Ther's so much stuff on RC that I think things just get buried sometimes
Linda
-
Linda, thank for that suggestion....
I will indeed try it.
;D
{BTW. If you don't mind me saying this, I am looking at your picture, and I too had a coat and a hat like that, many many years ago..
Mine was blue .}
LOL.

The best Genealogy site as people are able to help within minutes
Genealogy has given me help for early retirement as it absorbs the mind after along time of teaching
Finding a puzzle and being an" detective ", solving mysteries from a bygone era and the thrill of meeting 2nd,3rd 4th cousins from all over the globe
I cannot remember how I found rootschat (probably searching my Halstead,Pickup,Biddle Everett, surnames on the internet )
but I am glad I did!!!
THANK YOU to all who have helped my story
Turramurra

BTW. If you don't mind me saying this, I am looking at your picture, and I too had a coat and a hat like that, many many years ago..
Mine was blue
It must have been a very popular style. You're the 3rd person so far to have had one like it. :D :D
I think mine was probably beigey-brown with dark brown collar and pocket tops, but it was a very long time ago and the memory is not what it was :D
Linda
Next question - did you have the wellies and beret??
-
[font=Verdana]Hi Linda!
I think I could have had the beret.. Had wellies, but was never allowed to wear them with my 'best' blue coat.. :D
Those were the days when we had a good Sunday coat and an everyday coat, with which we could wear our wellies...
lol.
-
I haven't got a clue how I found rootschat - more luck than judegent, more accident than luck! Endless searching for help in starting some serious searching led me here - and I am really pleased I found you all. :D
I had a coat something like that too - I remember velvet topped pockets!

I found Rootschat after receiving a message from someone I had corresponded with on TalkingScot telling me their server had gone out of business and directing me here to check for updates.
Summer and some health issues interfered and I've only just started exploring here.

My aunt told me about this site a few months back and have become very addicted to it lol

Found rootschat by a most fortunate accident ;) I was fed up of non user-friendly sites and was just trolling the internet. Haven't looked back and I hope have helped the odd person find some relatives they previously didn't know they had. The kind users of this site have certainly helped my researches enormously..........thank you all.

I found this site through a family tree research thread on the Digital Spy forums. :)

I found rootschat from mary lennon wylie she also has a great site :) :) :)

I am looking for burials of my family that were from Beverley, Yorkshire and came upon this site. Still trying to figure our my way around things.

Loved reading all your comments - I know I'm a bit late joining in - like a lot of you, I can't quite remember how I came across RootsChat but I am so glad I did. Everyone is so helpful and giving of their time and expertise. I was also lucky enough to form a wonderful friendship with another RootsChatter and friendships last forever, don't they????

Last night I stumbled across a post on this site dating back to 2009 which relates to my great grandparents when they lived in Ceylon.
So far I am very impressed with this site and am amazed I never came across it before.
-
Welcome jaguar
-
I can't believe that it's taken me so long to find this gem of a place. In desperation after a solid brick wall I typed in my ancestors name and hey presto up popped the forum. I have spent many months with my head down completing several trees so now feel entitled to a bit of relaxation and perhaps some help with those trickier searches. I don't find that I'm too good with the Irish side... ::)
Anyway it's nice to be here :D Patti
-
Hi Patti
Welcome to Rootschat :D
You've come to the right place for help (and fun)
Jan ;)
-
Thanks Jan I expect you will be seeing a lot of me, I am totally absorbed in it, I love history I collect old things and love reading old books, I read the Flora Thompson books and then watched Lark Rise on Tv and couldn't resist drawing up the Timms family tree. How sad is that?
I guess I'm in some sort of time slip...
-
Googled another subject and this came up. Great site!
-
Purely by accident :)
I was searching for something completely 'off topic' and it turned up in the results.
-
I typed my family name into Google, and the first result was a RootsChatter who had listed half my family. I couldn't believe what I was seeing!
-
To be honest, I don't recall. But I do remember sitting down on the lounge one day, and wondered what it was that was sticking out behind the cushions. ;)
In another dimension, I typed in search for the truth in google, and look what I found....
Rootschat, where all the good folk are at!
Darren
-
I can't remember but it's been a godsend, thank you all for your patience and diligence. I probably came across it whilst faffing around on the net looking for family mentions. I would still be doing that without the rootschatter's help given to me over the past few years. Pat W
-
I think through a Family Search, what I do know it is a fantastic site and have passed on the site to many friends and family. Thank you all
-
I was looking for somebody who wrote thanks to all at rootschat so I logged on found the person and now I am hooked :D
-
I found it today Googling for information on a relative buried in the U. K. 150 years ago (I am American).
-
this is my first post/reply. i asked for advise about restoring photos on facebook and someone recomended i try here. that was about an hour ago and im still here, so far so good.
-
I was surfing the net and saw a question I could answer, it was almost 11pm and I was thinking about bed but thought I should pass on my information.
Then I found out I had to be registered to reply, okay I thought, I'll register, seems like everyone in England has the same user name or password as me, it took me forever to register but I did.
Next I think I chose Forum and all of a sudden people from everywhere were saying Hello and welcoming me to the forum.
They were all very nice but I thought this isn't where I should be, so I asked them where should I be and in seconds I was overwhelmed with help.
I have never looked back, everyone was so friendly and helpful, I managed to post my information but buy now it was 2am and it was replied to the next day.
My first introduction but what an experience, whenever I meet a Genealogist with a problem I say" have you tried Rootschat"
-
I can't remember either. But it was way back in 2007.
It's a superb site with so many helpful people. Shame I couldn't log back in with my old user name and fouled up because I had changed my email and couldn't remember my password.
So I had to re register. Hey ho.
It's a wonder I remember anything these days.
Susan :D
-
I found it while looking for genealogy forums. Seems well put together.
-
For the life of me, I can't remember, but Thank God I did. So many, many times I have been able to say "I wouldn't have got anywhere with this, without the help of Rootschatters" !! A truly knowledgeable, generous, helpful bunch of people - would have to be one of the best websites on the net - and I check it out at least once a day if not more - got my link on "automatic pilot". Don't even need to think about it. Thanks everyone, long live Rootschat!

I put the name of an ancestor into a search engine several weeks ago and found myself here, (the best move I ever made) ;D
I have been on it every day since and recommend it to everyone I know who does family history ;D

Hi everyone.
This is a first for me.Never joined anything or been in a forum!! Both my parents just passed away and am planning a trip to Scotland (from Australia) so was researching Temple in Midlowthian and found this site. My father was a Sinclair whose grandparents were from Muthill. Dad was also a Freemason and I now have his belongings. Very Cool!!
Vanessa
-
Hi nessasin, welcome to rootschat. Very sorry to read about your parents.
If you want to know anything or ask any advice on researching family history then ask on here, it is full of warm and friendly people who will be only too glad to be of any help to you.
Best regards, jess5athome ;D
-
Thankyou Jess,
Yes, this site is loaded with friendly and amazing people. Well I am still emptying my parents home (very hard and lots of work) and yesterday I found an ancient looking convict button off a uniform. Not surprising, since I am in Australia. I was thinking I will never know where it came from but anything is possible. Any ideas what to do?
-
Hi, you could always take a photo and upload it onto the site and ask if anyone could give you information about it, its a long shot but you never know your luck. If you do not know which forum to post a request on put it on the "common room" and a moderator will probably place it on the forum he or she thinks would be more beneficial.
Best of luck with your research.

Found purely by accident on a Google search looking for photographic restoration. Now a regular user for anything family history. Everyone is so helpful.
-
Found it trying to find parish information. Love the way it's divided into counties and it seems to be fairly busy. I'm a bit of local history enthusiast as well as a family historian, so have already been able to give some info to a couple of users.
-
I found out about it from a friend, in another forum I visit, and here she goes by Bagpuss_Janet :D. I'm very glad she recommended it!
-
I googled my great great great grandfather's name and someone mentioned his wife's name(my great great great grandmother) in a chat room here, so I was curious. And here I am.
-
loopylu suggested coming here
-
found it through a search engine when researching
-
Hi all rootschatters. Cant remember exactly how I found Rootschat. Think I just Googled family history forum. Glad I found it anyway. Hooked on it now. ;D
-
Hi, I found this site whilst trolling through a maze of Irish ancestry sites. Saw the reference and clicked on it, how fortunate was that. I've not quite gotten used to the site yet but it is very interesting and will keep me occupied for many hours.

Many hours? You have no idea Snowdropbrian! ;D
And welcome to rootschat.

Thanks to Pinefamily for the welcome

A friend from another forum gave me the info on Rootschat. I haven't used it much as yet, but hope to get to talk to members in the near future. My friend has helped me a lot in finding my husband's family history but there is still a lot more to find out. I thought when I paid subscription to one of the web sites that that was it...but now they want more for 'looking'. :)

Hello Lookinak75,
Welcome to Rootschat. I can only assume you mean Genesre*****d. The other pay sites all allow you to look at records, how many is dependent on how you have paid. And don't be fooled into thinking that you can only get info from the paid sites; freemd, freecen, freereg, and familysearch are all good free sites that are handy to use.
-
I'm still quite new to Rootschat too. I found it from an ad in a magazine I got out from our library. I think it's fab -always something interesting to read, I find myself reading through old posts quite often.
I tend to use FindMyPast and A* for free at the library. Although it's just when I'm getting somewhere that my two hours are up or my one-year-old wakes up (I pop him in his pushchair for his nap if I fancy a little look!).
-
I stumbled across it while looking for sites to research my family after using those others for a few years,,
ps so glad i did,,so many friends to help find the information we;re looking
-
I'm fairly new to this site, having asked a couple of questions elsewhere. I found the site via a friend on a private forum, mainly based on a shared interest in wildlife. I'd said something about having problems finding information about some particular person or situation, and she suggested RootsChat. She'd found it very useful in fidning out about family who'd moved to the US.
-
I was having difficulty with finding information on my grandfather, a friend recommended this site I was very impressed by the number of helpful messages I received. I will be recommending the site to other people. :)
-
I was at a talk in the local library where it was mentioned
I have found over the last few years that it been a great source of information and guidance
-
I googled 89 north road Wolverhampton and it came up with a recent photo, looked at this for a while then clicked off and went further down the list and saw a request for 1940's register. clicked on this, read the item, saw it was on rootschat, thought it seemed interesting and could help me look for information about 89 north road and joined.

I googled a the name of a woman I descend from in the hopes I might find some information with some ease and found her on a post. Essentially, I think I found a cousin of mine, or someone of some relation to me as we share a common ancestor.
I look forward to the discoveries and assistance this cite could provide.
-
I just signed up here today. I plunked my great uncle's name into google and the first link it listed was a topic here at rootschat so here I am. Hello to all :D
-
Hello Sinamint! :)
-
I googled a family surname just to see what would turn up and amongst the results was a dialogue between two Rootschatters ... so I joined in. I learned about part of my family, who had emigrated to New Zealand unbeknownst to me. Since then, I have met up in the UK with one of chatters(an Australian|) and her husband. We continue to e-mail each other. I have also visited New Zealand on holiday visiting Archives centres whilst I was there but missed meeting up with the other chatter by two months: she sadly died but I visited her locality and saw places that she had told me about and remembered her warmth and generosity.
-
Because I am a sticky beak I Googled the name of the executor of my grandmothers will as his name was not familiar. I wondered what made him better than family. Found him in a discussion on Rootschat and found that he was married to a cousin and a whole lot more relatives I didn't know existed.
-
it was in the corner of a page I was viewing so I thought I would give it a go I have been longing to do a family tree for years but don't have the funds to join these search groups and as this is free why not

Hi spike59, you will find that it is the most friendly and valuable of them also.
Frank.
-
Welcome Spike
I know you will like corresponding on this friendly and trustworthy site.
-
I think I found Rootschat through an internet search and have just noticed from my profile that I first registered 9 years ago today :)
I still think it is the best and friendliest genealogy site there is, so thank you everyone for 9 years of help, advice and friendship!
Pinetree
-
You got me thinking, Pinetree (nice user name by the way :) ). I had to check myself. 5 1/2 years myself. And loving every minute of it.
-
I really cant remember but it's a great site people so helpful it's a must for me every day
-
A friend, who uses it quite frequently, recommended it. Still getting to grips with it all though.
-
What Frank said. :)
By far the friendliest.
Thanks again to everyone who has helped me. You can't put a price on such kindness.
-
Found through a search engine. Love to send a message to someone straight away but I have to rack up three posts first...
-
I was randomly googling my GGM's name and found an active member here that was my GGM's brother's grandson. So then I stayed and read around ..... and joined.
-
That's the beauty of serendipity. Welcome to Rootschat!
-
I cant remember now, but it has gone from just a site to me to one of the best I know. Even though you don't know the people who use it, they are so friendly and helpful you find yourself thinking of them as friends.

-
Directed via search engine originally I think - about 5 1/2 years ago that was -
Very friendly and helpful so I stayed and came along for the ride. :D
-
Google search engine, I was looking for an ancestry forum where I could find tips and advice, this was the best one I found.
-
My first post so Hello to all.
For presentation purposes, I was doing a trawl of reviews of family tree creator software, I clicked on a link and ended up at the Rootschat site(?). The downside is that until stumbling upon Rootschat I'd thought I was reasonably 'genned up'!
FindMyPast subscriber - No happy conclusion with the presentation software.
-
Hi Ruddings, welcome to Rootschat :) you will love it here.
If you put something along the lines of "Family tree software" in the search bar at the top of the page a list of topics already on Rootschat will come up, you may find some help on those, just click on one to have a look.
Regards
Frank.

Hey,
I habitually Google the latest ancestor I find and my favorite brickwalls even after I have breached them, and this forum is alive.
Unlike another I recently discovered genforum which ancestry has closed.
Salute,
Janelle

I was being mislead by a web page proclaiming its abilities at discovering a pauper ancestor that I knew had been in the workhouse and eventually died there. Though the web page came up 0 after several edits including a wildcard entry. Reminding myself that I did not really need this info and that no site can ever be 100% perfect. I then sort of stumbled onto Roots Chat and here I am. ::)
-
Hi,
Welcome to RootsChat
I think you will definitely enjoy this site - if you need help there is always someone willing. Plenty of amusing threads to join in or just read.
Just scroll to the bottom of any RootsChat page there is a Surnames Interests Index link where you can add your own surnames if you wish.

Sandra ;D

Hi Sandra
Well light relief would make a pleasing change. I am on Ancestry and I can only assume that my attempts to correct a few mistakes by persons blindly accepting every single "hint" is seen as invasive or ill informed? I could give streams of examples but I am sure there might be a thread about it someplace and if not I might just toy with the concept.

Tim

Hi Tim,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
but I am sure there might be a thread about it someplace and if not I might just toy with the concept.
Please don't !! ;D ;D
We have topics about this regularly; just wait a bit and the next one will surely start ::)
(where of course, you can join in)
And while you are waiting, plenty of other stuff to see and do, so .... enjoy RootsChat :)
regards,
Bob

Hi Bob,
Yes there's a lot to catch up on until the next Ancestry thread ::)

Hi Clogs,
There is a thread linked below called "Inaccuracy Ancestry Trees" - might be worth a read.

I found rootschat a while ago while researching an ancestor. Recently I was reintroduced to rootschat via a British Home Child research group.
-
Google search
-
I think it was through Google.... Thank god for google!
Lots of great people and tons of help! Thanks everyone!

Somebody had a big thread on part of my family, which I found by Googling.... my GG-grandmother and her mother are both in other people's threads.... which I've not contributed to as I had "nothing of value to add", I knew that stuff (and more), but I'm silently hoping they'll post a gem at some future point :)

Hi Stanley, I am sure the other members would appreciate you just saying "Hi" so that they know you are also a rellie - I am sure they would love to know the "more" stuff too :)

Well, the stuff I know they would either already know if they've looked, and/or wouldn't be interested in as it's not really their family. It's the family of my GG-grandmother's husband/children (his children before they married, with his 1st wife) and their children together .... but then my GG-grandmother did a horrible thing and dumped them all once he'd died. So there's little interest from others in what she did next (prison + illegitimate children). I'm from that shady downline :)
-
Someone on anther forum (not family tree related but where a fair bit of research into other families goes on) mentioned it and I thought it might assist with family research.
-
I did a search for genealogy forums and happened on this site. ;D

I have forgotten how. However I am on it every day and the most remarkable problem of mine was an illegitimate boy whose father was found by RootsChatters and I traced back both mother and father as if nothing unusual happened . Small village of Brandon, Suffolk and the mother left clues in her son's name helped.
-
Strangely on a Group which had people collecting Hospital Badges. Somebody mentioned it as Mad Hatton.
-
I have forgotten now. But RootsChatters have performed the impossible. They cleared a blockage in my genealogy with the father of an illegitimate son Harry Erwin Baskerville, of Brandon, Suffolk, identified and I was able to continue Harry's line back on both mother and father as if nothing had happened. Hope this does not sound too bumptious but I have been able to help others too. From Australia to Zambia (the latter actually being Northern Rhodesia at the time).
-
Did they work it out with a pencil Barry? :D ;)
-
I can't really remember how, was probably Googling for something and came across Rootschat, been here ever since and am on it everyday. Have to have my dose of RC or the day is not complete.
Have had wonderful help and been able to help a little a long the way as well. A really great forum. :D
-
I found RootsChat through googling for a school my father used to go to.

I believe initially I found this place via a search engine however have been lurking here on and off for a couple of years in the search for info. I then had someone mention to me that it was a great forum to be part of with some good researchers out there so decided to join and get posting :)
-
Thank you for your comments Mike.
Glad you've had some success here.

I came across RootsChat more or less by accident :) . I was trying to determine if "Montcrieff" as a given name was male/female/either as I have two Montcrieff's in a genealogy tree, both with the same birthdate and parents. Logic says they cant both be correct ::)
-
Welcome and I hope you find lots of good things and plenty of help around here. ;) Most of us have.

Searching the net a few years ago. I come and go, as my health allows.
-
I have been with Rootschat since 2005 but I have a feeling I registered prior to that recommended by a woman who I met in London at the archives in Northampton Street, we became very good friends but sadly she isn't able to use her computer now due to ill health.
It is both compelling and rewarding being able to help and also ask for help ourselves, it amazes me how much people know about family history and genealogy, I have been at this lark for over 20 years and it never ceases to amaze me as to how helpful people are and of course I offer my help when I can
Everyone likes a challenge and that is what Rootschat is

I never heard of Rootschat before. I tried some time ago to see what info is available online about my ancestry, but I discovered my surname "Hastings" returns so many results that it was no use at all. I did find one pay site that sending me unsolicited advertising, and that put me off immediately.
Recently I learned however that my grandfather's name was originally something other than Hastings, and so I tried entering both those surnames into a search engine (not Google) and Rootschat was 3rd or 4th on the list of hits.
-
Registered in 2006. When the old BBC family tree forum clamped down on idle chit chat that was clogging up the BBC computer. So someone recommended the chat site on here and have used it ever since
-
I was sold on the merits of RootsChat by one of the local history staff at my local library. She is a RootsChatter and highly recommended joining.
I am so glad I took up on her advice to join. I love RootsChat!☺.
-
I cannot remember now. However if a site is genealogically excellent I will find it ....... and bookmark it.
-
Oh, it was easy... just followed my nose. ;)
Now for the hard part... learning it all over again.
Being off the computer for 18 months is dramatic!! The changes! Oh, the changes.... "I'm lost and I'm far from home.... " ???
-
Welcome back LB!!
-
I have forgotten now. But I can say I have a great spread of genealogical sites that I use. The more sites the better! I just realized that I had replied before. Said nearly the same as last time. That's good. Haven't changed.

I looked family history forum/or message board on google and this is one of the first hits that arrived.
Rather glad I found this lovely site out honestly.
I've been struggling to find the right kind of family history site and one that is active to boot.
-
I was visiting North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre, Motherwell hoping to sove my Scottish Brickwall/Bunker problem and someone on another machine suggested it.
-
I,ve been researching my family history with a few years. I was googling for more genealogy sites and found rootschat. I hope it will be of great help , how has it been for you ? Take care
-
I came across this amazing site in 2009, and as with a lot of others, it came up in a Google search for one of my relatives! Go Rootschat - the best thing since sliced bread! And much more 👍👍👍🌹🌹
-
I have forgotten now after so many years. Use it every day. Mainly help others. My specialty is County Durham West of the A1 (M). But at a push South Shields to British West Hartlepool. World includes Australia to Zambia. The latter actually Northern Rhodesia but A-Z sounds better.
-
Found Rootschat some years ago I was trying to trace someone who emigrated to Australia in 1959 I was actually successful with the help of someone on here, sadly though the person had passed away in Australia a couple of years before.
Ive not been on here for some time.
-
Via a Facebook group. Have no idea what I'm doing so far though!
-
Welcome EJJ
Don't worry to much about not knowing what you are doing, we all have to start somewhere and that is what Rootschst is all about, we all help each other
Happy hunting

Welcome to Rootschat, EJJ. I'd like to echo Louisa Maud's words. You can't do too much wrong on here.
We're a friendly bunch and very helpful. Have a look around, and when you're ready post a query or something you're stuck on. You will get plenty of help.
-
There are too many pages to go back through them all, but has anyone else seen the typo in the original poll question (not the Subject)? "Rootchat".
Anyway, one night, too cold to remove my gloves, I was seeking a
psychological evaluation method involving inkblots, and mistyped 'Rorschach'. I then decided to see if my sense of humour was inherited. I've never looked back.

I was looking for a Gardening Forum! ;D

A little tip if you use Rootschat for help, give as much information as you already know, it helps not to go over old ground as it were and if you have any family badger them for information as well

Pretty certain my mum and aunt used to use this to find their relatives and now that Ive taken the mantle I thought Id
abuse use all channels.
-
It was just an accident waiting to happen. After using various sites for family members but none on a particular relative I hoped to find, I typed their name directly into a search engine with year of death, bob's your uncle (or not) and here I arrived. Great find.
-
I was searching for information on my family ancestry. I had searched for my grandfathers parents information on the Swanbourne history and found that they were from Padbury. His father was Frederic Biddlecombe and mother Alice Vera Holdom. My grandfathers name is John Frederic Biddlecombe
-
I am very pleased to have found this site which was recommended by a fellow researcher. I can see that I am going to spend many happy hours here, there is so much to explore.
-
I was looking for a way to find records from my fiancé's maternal side of the family (all in Germany) and this site came up as a good way to find help with records.
-
I was looking for help on Romany surnames and came across a thread on here where one of my great uncles was mentioned on a "London Romany hawkers" list. It helped solved the mystery as to whether or not my great-grandmother had Romany heritage, which has always been a long topic of debate in my family! I've found the site very useful, especially for lookups and identifying brick walls in my family tree (particularly my paternal side, as I never knew my father, so didn't have anything apart from my father's name and surname to go on).
-
I googling for a genealogy chat and this popped up. just getting to know the cite. like it so far.
-
I had been trying to get information on my great granny who was born in Derrytrassna and I came across this sight.
-
I did a google search for a family member that brought me here.
-
I really can't remember how I got here but it is always a great joy!
-
I can’t remember, it was eighteen years ago!😄
-
I can't remember either, I joined in April 2005 - and am so glad I did :-)
-
I joined donkeys years ago, recommended by a friend I met in the London archives, no longer here, her name was Meliora, a truly lovely person, no longer here, some might remember her
