Hi All,
Does anyone have an old street map of Reading, and could tell me the location of Hope Street, I think it was in the vacinity of Howard street, so may have been demolished to make way for the fly over? I have a record of it on the 1911 Census, but cannot find it on any maps.
Regards
Sarah

Hi Sarah
I did a bit of Googling and found this : http://www.getreading.co.uk/community/s/2032305_looking_back_on_hosier_street_area
Hope Street is mentioned about halfway down the page, it seems there was a large fire in 1946. It also mentions surrounding streets and that the fire started at Warwicks Timber Yard. See this link for some more details of location: http://www.rootschat.com/links/09ni/

Hi Sarah
I have just had occasion to look for Hope St, Reading as an ancestor was there on the 1861 census. Looking at the other nearby streets on the census return there are Upper Hosier St, Soho St, Howard St. I have found a Victorian map (relevant extract attached) which shows the area prior to its eventual demolition. Whilst it does not specifically detail Hope St it does show the other named streets and therefore gives a general idea of the area. Regards Ray

Hi Ray,
Sarah was last active on this site in 2010, so may not be around to acknowledge your contribution.
On the map that Daisypetal posted there is the option on the site to link to a closeup of the street:

Thanks both for the updates above.
