I have newspaper references to the deaths of some members of my husband's family dating back to the 1840's. The family is DIGBY and the references are to the family "Seat" Osbertstown Kildare ( I think they were minor gentry ) and to Newpark Kinnegad Co Meath.
Does an old home exist in Osberstown that belonged to the DIGBY's.( I can't find anything on the Internet , but some local family history researcher might know). Was (is?) Osbertstown in Co Kildare?
I can't find any references to Newpark (I'm presuming that was the name of the residence) in present day KInnegad either.
I'd be grateful for any pointers as to where to look.

Google Books has details of Digby family in A genealogical and heraldic history of the commoners... which mentions Osbertstown and New Park- see here (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=KikAAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA460&lpg=PA460&dq=osbertstown&source=bl&ots=OUqtREr4w1&sig=s45Q5d9oThzoRLDkNMVfYhHAUmk&hl=en&ei=E2J7TIWDJcHc4gah97mUDQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBsQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=osbertstown&f=false)
Recect mentions of an Osbertstown House (not sure if same one)-

Thanks . I already knew about the Genealogica and Heraldica site and I was looking for something a bit more contemporary.
It sounds like the 43 roomed palladian style Osbertstown House mentioned in the article might be what I am looking for.
Now I need to find the history of the building and a picture of the place.
Maybe someone who lives in the area could provide me with some more details.

HI ,
I don't know if you found out any detail on Osberstown House. i too have been looking for information on this subject as both my grand-parents worked there and my great grandmother. I think there was definitely a change of ownership in the early 1900's but that's about as much as I know. My grand-dad was the chauffeur and both his first wife and my grandmother were in service there. My great-grandmother was a house-keeper at one stage.

Hi there
Have not done any further research on Osberstown House. However your message has reminded me to put this on the "to do" list.
Found this link the other day which mentions the house and some proposed roading changes which may or may not have happened due to the dire financial situation . www.kildare.ie/countycouncil/NationalRoadsDesignOffice/M7OsberstownInterchangeMotorwayScheme2008/LinkToDocument,16644,en.pdf
Have you tried linking your relatives to the house through the 1901 and 1911 censuses.?
Regards Orkrad.
-
Yes ,
My relatives had houses in Osberstown area of Sallins during the census period. The house lies just outside Sallins Co Kildare and was purchased by Lawlors of Naas who still own the Lawlor's Hotel in Naas. Hope your research goes well.

hello
there is also a digby bridge about 2 miles from osberstown, crossing the canal.
between caragh and clane

If it's Osberstown House, Sallins, then the house is currently in the ownership of Mr Bill Cullen. You can check his profile on Wikipedia. He is something of a minor celebrity in Ireland, a successful businessman.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Cullen_(businessman)
As for the Digby's, there is a canal bridge named "Digby Bridge" over the Grand Canal at Ballysize / Fleshtown, County Kildare. As far as I know Digby's were landlords in the Caragh / Clane area in the nineteeth and early twentieth centuries, maybe even before. Look up the Griffith Valuation (askaboutireland.ie) to find out what lands they held at the time.

Thanks everyone for your input.
Am very excited for have finally found some more details about John Digby (1769-1840) from a gravestone inscription record. He was buried in the parish of Castlejordan on 20 Jan 1840 and was aged 71. His address is given as Oberstown ( I'm sure that's a mis spelling). His memorial was erected by his son Simon DIGBY. The occupation of John DIGBY was Comms of the Peace which I take to be some sort of magistrate and his other designation as Minister of the Church of Ireland is not mentioned. I find this surprising.
Someday when I get to visit Ireland again ( I live in New Zealand) i may be able to get a photograph of the gravestone if it still exists.
I wonder what happened to the family home at Newpark Kinnegad where John Digby is reputed to have died.
Regards Orkrad.

Thank you for the reply. The information is most interesting. I am sure this is indeed our John DIGBY> I note there are two schools in the district. His children probably attended them. I wonder if the school records still exist. Maybe some local Rootschatter would know.

Hi Raywest
Greetings from New Zealand. Thanks for the information on the gravestone of the Rev John Digby who is an ancestor. The information has lots of detail which I didn't have.
How can I get access to the material mentioned as B in your Email---Irish Ancestor vol 5.2? It is possible that it lists John Digby's family members whose names I know but which I would like to confirm. John Digby was twice married and our family is descended from his second marriage to a lady names Eliza Bor.
Also is there a way to access the National Library of Ireland manuscript files without physically attending the library?.
The Digby's of Landestown and Geashill are unfortunately not directed related to our Rev John Digby. I think he was a relatively unknown second or third cousin. He does refer to himself as John Digby of Newpark Kinnegad and is referred to as Digby of Osberstown in Genealogica and Heraldica.
Thanks for taking the time to research Rev John Digby. I really appreciate your help. Kia Ora Orkrad.

The Irish Ancestor is available on CD http://www.eneclann.ie/acatalog/ENEC009.html but the article gives no more information than I supplied. A list of heads of house.
The manuscripts at the National Library have to be consulted in situ.
House of Commons Papers Vol 9 in 1820 notes “Rev John Digby has cure of souls resides in a house of his own three miles from the church and performs the duties” This was New Park. See A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837
In that the rev Digby was at Castlejordan from 1806 till his death in 1840 I presume you have had someone look at the registers in the RCB library in Dublin. One of them (234.1.3) has an inscription on the front page “Castlejordan Church / Rev John Digby Curate/ 1822”.
I need to do more work on the Bors who built Ballindoolin House, the home of a branch of the Tyrrells when the Bors left. http://www.ballindoolin.com/house.html I need to get to Genealogica and Heraldica on the Bors from which Google omit pages – why bother scanning? And it can’t be copied.
I am still looking into Osberstown House as the Digby residence. I should know it. I went there as a teenager to appear grown up when it was Lawlor’s Hotel!
Greeting from Khobar, Eastern Province, KSA.

Thanks everyone for all the valuable information.
I have visited the Representative Body Library in Dublin but it was five years ago and I had only recently become involved in family history so wasn't quite sure what questions to ask. I consulted the Leslie Succession lists for Castlejordan (Meath vol1 p 155)and the Alumni of Trinity College Dublin.(1593-1846) page 229.
This is what I know about the good reverend. He was baptised 20/08/1769. Address: Osberstown ,District:Naas Co Kildare. Denomination :Church of Ireland . Father : Rev Simon Digby Mother: Elizabeth .
He married Elizabeth Bor (daughter of Edward Bor) in 1797 (IGI. They had several sons including Simon and George and also a daughter Jane. Some of the children moved to England and can be found on various censuses. Edward Bor owned a house called "Park" four miles from Ballindolan on the road to Kinnegad. John DIGBY's house was called Newpark and was at Kinnegad.
Elizabeth died in 1806. John DIGBY married her cousin Eliza BOR daughter of Christopher BOR and Ann LOFTUS of Annesbrook around 1817. I have not been able to authenticate this marriage It is from this second marriage that our family descends.
The Rev John DIGBY was perpetual curate at Castlejordan 1792-1840. He died at his residence Newpark.
There are lots of things I want to know including the name of John Digby's mother and the authentication of his second marriage.
Our family is descended from John's daughter Elizabeth Jessie Digby who married an Alfred William Smith and migrated to New Zealand.
Thanks to all you wonderful resarchers . I would be grateful for any further information on John DIGBY and his Irish families.
Regards Orkrad.
