Hi,
I am hoping that somebody may be able to help me, my ancestor RICHARD TILLEY apparently served in the 17th foot regiment between 1799-1823.
I have no idea of how to begin researching his career or finding out whereabouts he may have been posted or which battles he may have fought in.
On the 1851 census he is listed as a 'Chelsea Pensioner', and he lived in Towcester, Northamptonshire (although I thought that the 17th foot was a leicestershire regiment which is a bit confusing ???).
Any help anyone can give me with finding information about Richard and his military career would be much appreciated, thanks. Nathan.:)

Has a Richard TILLEY, born 1780, Towcester, Northamptonshire
(British Army Service Records 1760-1913)
Which agrees with the Census (age & pob) and the entry in Nat Archives.
Looks like there are 2 images in the set.
Cheers
AMBLY

Hi Nathan
The names given to infantry regiments are mainly meaningless until c1870 when they started to have permanent depots.
For most of his service the 17th Regiment were in India.
