				Hi

I have a Samuel Bates abt.1763 died 1812 richmond nr. leyburn.  I have had a guess at his father who i think is John Bates abt. 1737 of Sowerby Bridge, and his father Samuel abt.1700 birth place unknown.

I really want to go back as far as possible with this line but really struggling the further back i go. (not many records available)

any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

Samuel Bates abt.1763 sons seem to be Gun makers/smiths however, i do not know if this is the same for Saml.

dont have much info other than what is here and Samuel Bates' family from 1800s onwards.

 many thanks
 Lorraine

				Hi Lorraine

Think the following is your family

Samuel Bates c 17/07/1763 Sowerby Bridge
 Father
John Bates c 2/2/1745 at Foxton, Leicester
 parents were
 Samuel and Ann
their marriage was on 20/02/1745 at Langton Thorpe Leicesters not far from Foxton
 Samuel Bates c 22/01/1718 Foxton
 father
Ambrose who married Elizabeth Shreeve on 5/07/1717 at Foxton
 his Father was
 Samuel Bates - again - b 4/10/1700 c 11/10/1700 at Foxton
 parents were
 Samuel and Elizabeth

Hope this is your family and I will leave a little for you to do lol.
If you look in the site FamilySearch Record, it takes time and a little
changing of names dates etc but I found all this on there
 Good Hunting

				Hi Sandymc

thanks loads for your reply, I thought noone would.

It is quite a hard one as its quite a popular name, and records are not brilliant before 1800.

I am not sure about your John and Samuel, I do not think they are from Leicester its 150 miles from Sowerby bridge.  I think the Bates are a Yorkshire family.

I did find a John Bates abt 1735 Sowerby, married Sarah unknown abt 1760 which I think would tally with Sam born 1763.

I think i have to accept this is a dead end for now, I cannot make it to Yorkshire as i live in South West Wales and its a 4-6 hour drive.

 thanks again for the help
