Hi
I have checked both St Marys and Holy Trinity Church PR's and can find no trace of a Sarah Vince being baptised or married in either church.
Sorry
Pam

Is this them on 1861?
Looks like a second marriage for James
8 Union Sq Clerkenwell
James Mann 50 bricklayer bn Savoy Strand*
Sarah 45 Charwoman bn Bungay Suffolk
Henry 11 son bn Kingsland
Sophia 8 or 18 dtr bn Kingsland
*was he really born at THE Savoy in the Strand?!
I see the marriage at St Pancras, (not Bungay at all) and yes, James was a widower.

1851 only seems to have 2 unmarried Sarah Vinces born in Suffolk
Neither is perfect age wise, but she wouldnt have been the first to have adjusted her age slightly as she got older
there is
a) a 29 yr old servant housekeeper bn Layham
b) a 31 yr old dressmaker bn Kersey.
my suffolk geography is not good enough to know if either are near Bungay

Hi yes thats them James is my ggggrand father, its was his 2nd marriage his first to Sophie Chicheley in 1826 she died in 1843 and he remarried Sarah in 1847 on the wedding bans it says she was from Bungay and her father was Stephen Vince but dead thats all i have to go on im afraid also it said James father was George Mann would love to find him but nothing more to go on.

Going back to 1841
there is possibly the Laylham one age 25 (rounded ages)living with a host of other yound Vince adults who could be siblings, and a MAry age 60 who could be their widowed mother (widow of Steven?)
and possibly the Kersey one living with what could be parents John and MAry
-
I have Sarah as a lodger in 1871 age 62 i recon she would be 65 living alone cant find James in 1871

Googled them place they are about 48miles from Bungay

Stephen Vince was buried at St. Mary, Bungay 25/1/1809 aged 33 i.e. bc.1776
A Sarah Vince married a Jonathan George at same place 20/1/1815 - could she have possibly been Stephen's widow? - she then had 3 children:
Jonathan bp.18/2/1818 St. Mary, Bungay
Sophia bp.15/12/1820
Charles bp.23/1/1823
A Sarah George was buried at St. Mary, Bungay 22/1/1823 aged 42 i.e. bc.1781
According to 1851 census Sarah bc.1806 - found 2 other Vince's who married in Bungay who, according to later census, were born in Bungay so possibly sisters of Sarah i.e.
Emily Vince (bc.1802) married to Charles Batelle 5/11/1827 Holy Trinity, Bungay
Harriet Vince (bc.1808) married to Edward Pitt 27/4/1836 St. Mary, Bungay

So many thank you to you, where and how did you find all this i have looked everywhere and hit brick walls, having read all this info the only thing is
if Charles was born bp 23/1/1823 you say Sarah was buired 22/1/1823?
many thanks again Jean

There are still many Vince families in this area of south west Suffolk (near to Hadleigh, such as Layham and Kersey). However, it would have been a bit of a trek up to Bungay from here ???

Thanks for your reply, i visited Bungay last week and looked around St Marys churchyard but could not find anyone shame a lovely place.
jean
really need confermation now on the 2 dates Charles born and Sarah death as it looks like she was buired a day before Charles was born hoping its a typo error

Hi Jean,
We recently stayed in the area for a long weekend, takes an hour and a bit to drive there now from south Suffolk :D
It's unlikely that 'ordinary folk' will have memorials/headstones.
It might be worth writing to the church wardens at St Mary's to see if they have a 'map' of the churchyard and if they can tell you if/where your ancestors were buried.
I borrowed the 'map or plan' of our new cemetery from our churchwardens and copied it one afternoon onto the back of a roll of wallpaper - have it handy for when researchers knock on the door ;)

Jean, I have checked the Diocesean web site and if you go to the pages for St Michael and St Luke there is a lay preacher who is also a church warden - I think it might be worth emailing her to see if she can help further.
The page with the info is here

At the moment the details I gave are just a possible. You would need to check the Sarah marriage to see if she was indeed a widow.
However, the date of Charles is a baptism date, not a birth date, and could have been days, or even weeks after his birth. Sarah may well have died as a result of his birth but at the moment it really is if's, but's and maybe's. A check of these events needs to be made in Bungay records to see if it all fits or not.

Hi Thomasina
I've just peeped in on this conversation, which looks very interesting to me, as I have only recently completed the cataloguing of all 800+ memorials and gravestones in St Mary's Church, Bungay.
I hope you enjoyed your recent trip to St Mary's, and the search of the churchyard. I've checked my findings, hoping to discover stones for Stephen Vince or Sarah George but, sadly, I can confirm that I could find no trace of a memorial for either Stephen or Sarah.
Annette7 clearly has access to the same Parish Records data source as I do, so I haven't delved any deeper, except to confirm the burial dates of 25/1/1809 for a Stephen Vince, and 22/1/1823 for a Sarah George.
Wishing you the best of luck with your research.
