from Bishop Auckland:
Westgarth, Ellen Newton b. 1863 married Wilson, Thomas in 1883. 6 children.
from Stanhope:
Westgarth, Charles b. 1838 married Newton, Margaret in 1859. 12 children.
Westgarth, John b. 1803 married Wilkinson, Mary in 1826. 8 children.
Westgarth, John b. 1778 married Place, Ann in 1798. 14 children.
Westgarth, Joseph b. 1749 married Blackett, Mary in 1772. 9 children.
Westgarth, Thomas b. 1714 married Nicholson, Ann in 1737. 5 children.
Westgarth, Thomas b. 1676 married Walton, Alice in 1700. 8 children.
I have been through records to find Westgarth's from Stanhope so have a bigger list than what is listed above, but have not yet found where they all sit. I'm happy to share if anyone is interested. :)

Hi ecochincnz,
I have a Westgarth line from Durham area. I have a Abraham b.1826 Bishop Auckland and his father William Westgarth b.1783 BP Auckland , there are plenty of others but not all from BP Auckland, but they are scattered around the Durham area.
Do you want to compare notes?? :)
Elaine.

Hello. There are gravestones for Westgarth at Stanhope, Tow Law, Stanley Crook and Crook.
The Crook one I have posted and you can see it on post number 43 on the Crook thread.
If you think the others may be of interest just post the request on the correct thread ie M inscriptions Stanhope or M inscriptions Stanley Crook etc

Hi Elaine,
I would like to compare notes, yes :)
My older Westgarths seem to nearly all come from Stanhope (including Jolly Body and Shittlehopeside), but Lanchester and Bishop Auckland feature too.

Hi.
I too am a descendent of the Westgarths. My gt.grandfather was James Westgarth and it seems that he was a brother to your Abraham. Should you wish to compare notes with me, I too would be more than happy to oblige.
Kind regards,
Dorothy

Hi again folks,
I wasn't sure whether to PM you or post but I will try and keep it as brief as possible.
Going back to 1783 I have William Westgarth and wife Harriet in BpAuckland,
they had a son - John Westgarth b.1826 Pelton, Durham wife was Annie,
their son - John G Westgarth b.1853 BpAuckland and wife Mary Alice, their son -
John G Westgarth b.1896 Shotton, Durham, and died 1920 Fishburn (first miner to have an accident and die in Fishburn Colliery) he was married to Ethel Thompson (my Grandmother's sister).
Of course I have all of the siblings and their spouses and children just wanted to try and keep this short.
Feel free to contact me for further information.
Cheers,
Elaine :)
P.S. Doric - I can't find a James on my list I have a John as brother to Abraham, and a William and Isaac besides some sisters???

Oooh, wonder if my Westgarth ancestors fit in anywhere!
My g.g.g. grandfather was Robert Westgarth b. abt 1794 in Bishop Auckland. He married Elizabeth Eggleston Aug 1815 & they had 8 children (that I know of!) including my g.g.grandmother Jane b. 1828 in Bishop Auckland: she married William Fairlam in Oct 1854 at Chester-le-Street.
I donot have any names of Robert's siblings so donot know if there is a 'possibility' anywhere

Hi Hephzibah,
I suppose it's a possiblity your Robert could have been brother to my William Westgarth as they are born in Bishop Auckland. I can't seem to get back any further than William, I don't have his parents or any siblings for him. I've tried IGI and Durham Records plus Hugh Wallis but no luck :( So I'm stuck at the moment.
It would be nice to have a match somewhere along the line.
Elaine.

Nice to see others with Westgarths :) but so far I don't fit in anywhere :-\
From various websites I have compiled a list of Westgarths from Stanhope but it is by no means complete. Some of the people I have managed to put into a semblance of order and relatedness, but with others I am not sure if they fit into one branch, or are separate. I can post it here if anyone is interested.
I have found some confusion around one particular marriage, which is what started the hunt: Thomas Westgarth supposedly born 1714 is listed by some people as marrying a Margaret Clemison and others have an Ann Nicholson, but I could find no listing in the Stanhope marriages for Margaret (although a Margaret Clemison married someone else in that list). If anyone has evidence, or could point me to a website which shows this as correct, I'd love to be able to figure it out for sure :) I have put his wife as Ann at present because the marriage IS listed.

Hello.I posted all the gravestone inscription threads and reading the posts on this thread I think you may be asking about the Westgarth name.
The oldest gravestones for Westgarth are at Stanhope and they used to be on the Pennine Ancestors web site.
Although I did the Stanhope gravestones a long time ago I did not post them because like I said above they had been done by others.
The Pennine website has shut down and I will do look ups if a new thread is started.
Like all my other postings I will not enter any cross threading because I think it makes it difficult to search.
So if anyones needs to find the various threads use the search box at the top or just type M inscriptions followed by the place name in the "google box"
Cemeteries/Graveyards posted are :- Brancepeth, Howden le Wear, Hamsterley, Willington, Crook, Stanley Crook, Escomb, Thornley, Wolsingham, Hunwick, Witton le Wear, Satley,
Tow Law, Lanchester, Lynesackand and Muggleswick.
Pleas read the posts before posting a request. You never know you may find links that you did not know about.

Thank you Adam :) I guess it will all become easier once I am more familiar with everything here.

Thanks for the PM Doric,
I've just modified my original post so hopefully it makes sense now!! :-[
Will take a better look at the info you sent me and get back to you.

Hello ecochicnz I belong to the Westgarth Stanhope line. I have a Great Aunt Ettie (Ester) Westgarth who married Frank Harry. He died in 1920 and she went out to N.Z. We lost all contact with her and know nothing of her live there. I was wondering if perhaps you were a relation or have come across her in your research. Most if not all the names you mention are in my family tree going back to 1624 Stanhope

Hi Katherine1
Nice to hear from you! Esther Westgarth is my '2nd cousin 3 x removed' :)
I had no idea she had moved to NZ, but I will chase that up now I know.
I would love to hear from you, so I'll pm my email addy to you and you can contact me directly if you like, and we can compare info. It took me ages to find this branch on the tree.

I have several Westgarth's in my records, including John (1778) who married Ann. Ann was Ann Place, born abt 1769 Stanhope. My main interest is in the Place family but I'm happy to share anything that might be useful to you. The Westgarths were a fairly proliic family and because I'm rebuilding my database because of a computer meltdown I don't think I've caught up with all of them yet.

I'm looking for the Westgarth family from Richmond, Yorkshire, namely Robert from around 1750. Anyone have any information on this line of the Westgarth's?
