I have a number of ancestors who were in the army and I am failing to find them in any census---I do believe they were in the country at the time of the census. In one case I found the wife living with relatives. If they were on a military base how were they recorded on a census? How can I find them please
-
If they were resident in the country on the night of the census, they would be recorded just the same as anyone else and should come up under their given names no matter where they were at the time.
Why not post thier names and see if anyone can find them.

Thank you and I hope I have not been stupid in my searches!
Charles Reginald Black born 16 April 1877 at Buttervant in County Cork. Father Hugh was in the 82 Foot and presumably posted there.
Charles joined Royal Irish Fusiliers 28 June 1897, served in South Africa 1899, 1900 1902 and transferred to reserve in January 1903 and was discharged June 1909. Married Harriet Pawsey in March 1911and I found in 1911 census although his birth year is shown as 1880.
He was living with wife and mother now named Hill as she had remarried after death of Charles father--see below
William Hill born, I think July 1850, joined Middlesex regiment June 1869. Served in Ceylon ( Sri Lanka) 1874/79,South Africa 1879
based in Limerick 1881/82, Guernsey 1982/84 and Dover 1885/86
Married Elizabeth Black (Maiden name Tapper) on Guernsey 19 November 1882 Died 28 June 1898
There will have been some of children from Elizabeth`s first marriage. William Henry 1873 Francis 1874 Archibald Ludwig 1875 Charles Reginald 1877 Mabel Edith 1878 and Emily 1879
Any help greatly appreciated

Rather belatedly finding your post and not sure if there might be a link or not.
In my family's Black grave in St Mary's Cathedral in Limerick there is a baby girl Elizabeth Emily Black who died 3rd Jan 1880 just 3 months old. Emily's parents were Hugh and Elizabeth Black (Elizabeth was nee Tapper).
Hugh was a prison warder at the military prison in New Barracks in Limerick and died sometime in the 3rd quarter of 1879 aged 42. Hugh and Elizabeth lived at 2 Roden Street, Limerick, which I suspect were military houses attached to the barracks. I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect that the prison warder's job might have been something reserved for someone with past military service.
That's about all I know of Hugh and Elizabeth at this time but I'm intrigued by your mention of your William Hill having been in Limerick in 1881/82 and of his marrying Elizabeth Black (nee Tapper) later in 1882 - I wonder if our two Elizabeth Tapper's are one and the same.
Exactly how Hugh Black and baby Elizabeth fit into my family I don't yet know. My great great grandmother married two Sergeants from the 56th Foot, her second husband and my great great grandfather being William Black (1834-1877) - I wonder if William and Hugh might have been brothers.

Robert Thank you for the information--I am sure we have some common ground.
I have been away for a few days and am just back but will dig out Elizabeth Tapper bible where she kept records of family events and William Hills army papers.
I will get back to you in a few days

Hi to all those interested in Hugh Black and his wife Elizabeth Tapper. I have been trying to track down information on my wife's gg grandmother Mabel Edith Black for a long time. I had her marriage record from 1901 in Westmeath Twp, Renfrew County, Ontario Canada for a while but the parent names of Hugh Black and Elizabeth Tupper never turned up anywhere else. From reading the posts on this site I understand now that she never emigratred with any of her direct family. I am happy to discuss her family with those interested.

Hi Jason
Mabel Edith Black was born 29 June 1878--one of six children of Hugh Black and Elizabeth Tapper (my great grandparents)
We have a bank holiday weekend here in the UK and my wife and I are preparing for three children, two with husbands and five grandchildren to turn up for the next few days-- so am a little pressed for time at the moment but will write again with as much info as I have after the weekend.
Regards

Just to clear up a point:
If you are talking of people in Ireland, only the 1901 and 1911 censuses survive.
Free to search at http://census.nationalarchives.ie/
If you are talking about censuses in England & Wales, Military personnel were included ONLY if they were at a base in England or Wales until 1901.

Hi Jason,
You'll see from previous posts that I probably have a connection to Mabel Edith although exactly what that connection is has still to be discovered (beyond an infant sister to Mabel buried in the same plot as my Great Grandparents in Limerick, Ireland).
The entry in the 1901 Canadian Census is interesting. Her date of birth of 29 Jun 1878 is exactly the same as Mabel Edith Black born in Fort Carlisle, Cork, Ireland - so it seems safe to assume we have the correct person.
I am intrigued that Mable is shown apparently with her maiden name but as a widow. The one year old child Wilfred has the surname Black and, although listed as born in Ontario, has his nationality given as Irish - so presumably he is Mabel's child. He also seems to given the relationship of grand-daughter !! We could be looking at Mable be a daughter-in-law to the family, although she not listed as such - or she could have had a previous marriage - or Wilfred could be illegitimate. Might be interesting to find Wilfred's birth record.
best regards for now

Hi Robert, just read your post today as I got sidetracked with some holidays and such. I went back and had a closer look at the 1901 census for Mabel Edith Black in Westmeath, Renfrew Co., ON and you have a point regarding the Wilfred Black listed in the family group. This Wilfred shows up in later census entries as Wilfred Wilson, presumably taking on his mother's married name after marrying William Wilson on 24 Aug 1901. I don't currently have a subscription for the Canadian Ancestry site but I expect to get a months subscription in the near future and I will see what I can find on his birth. I expect that there may be a connection for Wilfred to the Berggren family that his is living with along with his mother.
Also, Terry indicated that he though Hugh Black's father was also Hugh Black. You thought that Mabel's father Hugh and your great great grandfather might be brothers. Have you ever found anything to indicate your great great grandfather's dad was the same Hugh Black?
Thanks for the info.
