Title: Hewinson Family - any leads to Manchester?
Post by: Tiya on Tuesday 24 August 10 13:52 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone can suggest any leads please for the Hewinson family?

I am trying to track down the previous generations of the family who settled in Burslem in Stoke on Trent and had around 13 children in the 1830s and 1840s.

John Hewinson says he was born in Manchester in 1802 and his wife Mary Brownsword in Frome in Somerset in 1809. They are easy to trace through the census records and I have Burslem/ Hanley parish records for the children's christenings and the marriage in 1830 but I am having no luck with finding either John & Mary's births.

John started a family bible with his birth in 1802 as the first entry (no parents!).  He writes his name as John Bath Hewinson, but this is the only time he appears to use the 'Bath' name.  He always spells the name as Hewinson although the name has many variations in the records.

Is anyone else researching this family?  Any help would be gratefully received.

I am researching the HEWINSON genealogy (largely Gloucestershire, from c1700 and South Wales from 1876). Am also trying to link this Manchester / Burslem / Wolstanton to the main tree as all Hewinsons appear to be related somehow, but with no success as yet. Can share the info I have. What is your connection to the Hewinson name please? Hewy

Hi Hewy

John Hewinson from Manchester was my gt gt gt grandfather through his daughter Sarah.  The name is not easy to trace because of the many spelling variations and transcription errors but even though I am aware of these I can find nothing to fit in Manchester.

I have noticed the main group of Hewinsons located in Gloucestershire and was thinking it might be necessary to trace from there to see if I can find a stray but I would be very grateful for any suggestions you may have to save me doing this!  I thought the use of the 'Bath' middle name might indicate a Gloucester origin but am puzzled by John's statement that he was born in Manchester.

Are you part of the Gloucester Hewinsons?

Thanks for replying. Yes, my ancestors are from Gloucestershire originally, although my great grandfather moved to Newport, South Wales, in 1876 and my immediate family have been here ever since, so we constitute the "Welsh" Hewinsons. All Hewinsons in the censuses are related apart from this John Hewinson so far, and I have spent quite a long time trying to link him, and most frustrating it has been too. I have 13 children listed by him, including Sarah Ann Hewinson, b.1846 Wolstanton. According to my records she married John Twigg, 1872, and I have 6 children of theirs in my tree. This is better continued directly I think, so please email me on .................
I am very interested in your tree, and I can supply you with any details you want regarding the Gloucestershire/South Wales Hewinsons.
Regards, Hewy.
