Can anyone please tell me how I can find where this ancestor of my husband is buried? I'm hoping it might give us a clue as to the cause of death and why he was in Johannesburg at that time, having been born in Wales in 1864.
Thanks,
OzzieJoan

Hi there,
There is a death notice for Thomas Price in the TAB archives. If you order that it should give you further info regarding occupation and cause of death. Simmer and Jack is a mining company, so it is likely he was a miner on the gold mine.

Thankyou Ruth,
Can you please tell me what are the TAB archives?

Hi Joan,
If you look at the stickys at the top of the South Africa board, you will see info about the archives. it is our best source of info for anyone researching family history. It is just a reference, with numbers, to what is held in the archives. His death notice will be held at the TAB archives ( now Gauteng) in Pretoria ( now Tshwane). If you apply for the death notice through EGGSA ( SA genealogical society) it is very reasonably priced.

You will need the need the info below obtained from the archives ( naairs) to order a death notice. Death notices are a really god source of information. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with - but read all the info at the top of the board about death notices and the archives.

Thank you so much, Ruth. I will go look at the SA page right now. I might even find someone on there who could photograph the headstone if there is one.
Kind regards,
Joan

Hello,
The Genealogical Society of South Africa's national Cemetery Recording project has an entryfor Thomas Price which reads as follows:
Thomas Price died 11.2.1897 buried Primrose, Germiston (Greater Johannesburg) he was 32 years old. From Porth, South Wales. Died at Simmer and Jack Mine, Germiston. The tombstone was erected by his friends.
Hope this helps.

Hello Nat,
Many thanks for sending me that MI for Thomas. It would now seem as though he left no family. I think it would have said something like 'beloved husband of..........' That was my main reason for trying to get more information.
I did send an email to the company he worked for who are still in existence (Simmer and Jack) but have had no reply.
It would have been nice to get a photo of the grave - perhaps one day someone with access to Primrose Cemetery will manage to do that for me. There is a Primrose Cemetery mailing list on Rootsweb but there is no activity on it so not many members I think.

Hello Nat , could you tell me how to find the Cemetery Recording project on the GSSA , I have been to the site but cant see what you mentioned, I am trying to see if my g-grandfather is buried some where in SA as family story is he was killed in a Gold Mine out there between 1882-1891, I have recived some death notices for John Roberts from the achives but they were not him, so I am trying other ways to trace him. Iam sure there must be some record somewhere.
Thanks and Kind Regards Mrs Griff

The mining of gold began here in Johannesburg in 1886, the province (or County to you) was at that time Transvaal or republic of Transvaal. the best way to see if there is a document on him is the website NAAIRS at the national archives of South Africa www.national.archives.gov.za it's a good idea to read through the HELP section first, but you should choose TAB and SAB for transvaal and see if anything comes up for him. I looked on the Cemetery Recording database (it's a disc I bought) but although several John Roberts mentioned, none in the time frame you require. Are there any other pointers for him you know of, where was he born, what year, a middle name, was he married, his wife's name, did he perhaps come out for the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 ? loads of questions .. but they may just spark off a lead. regards, Nat

Thank you so much for looking , my g-grandfather was John Roberts dob nov 1849 birthplace Caernavon North Wales wife Jane and 4 chidren who where waiting to join him when news came he had been killed , but not certain of date only that his last child was born 1882 and his wife remarried in 1889 , no middle name , I have recived death notices that I found on NAAIRS they were Tab & Kab but they were not him , such a brick wall .
Nat, Kind Regards Mrs Griff

Hello again,
there were many john Roberts on the National Archives database but all of them had middle names and or dates were out. Now, all the references for Deaths on NAAIRS which I told you about are for Death NOTICES - a death NOTICE differs from a death certificate in that the document in "born" at the Master's Office in the event a Testament or Will is lodges. Sorry, should have thought about this earlier - therefore he will not have a Death Notice here in SA - simply because there was no Estate or landed property etc out here.
Are you certain he died in the Transvaal?
1. is there not a death registered for him in Wales - I am not sure about how re-marriages work over there, but here, if a spouse dies and has minor children, the surviving spouse has to be issued with a re-marriage certificate - that is something you will have to check with the local authorities though. Have you an exact date of re-marriage for his widow? Is there information about how long she was a widow - that might give us more of a lead?
2. check out the local papers for that time- for his home area for a notification of his death.
3. Even condolence messages from family etc may give you more information.
4. A Death Certificate - the Department of Home Affairs civil registration for Transvaal only began in 1901 so no help there.
If I think of anything else I will let you know...

Hello Nat, you have giving me some good information to think about, I am not sure where he was killed ,but family story is that it was a gold mine in SA and I have have had no luck with passenger lists ,it's so frustrating but I have to try all avenues. thanks once again for your help , I would appreciate if you think of any other area's to research in SA with gold mines during the time 1882-1889.
Kind Regards Mrs Griff
