Hi all
Found this article today - http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/news/2010/july/28/kents_150-year-old_newspapers.aspx - regarding the digitising of the KM archive from its founding up to 1919. They're looking for volunteers if anyone is interested!!

Does any one know what is happening with regards to this?
Is anything available on line yet?
Cheers Leonie

Here’s where we are!...
We have catalogued and repaired the pages.
We are now going through the tenders so hopefully the pages will be ready to view by the end of the year or early next year.
All very exciting but a fairly slow operation due to the nature of the work.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi
Yes, we are getting there! I hope launch will be September! Best wishes

That's good news.
We look forward to seeing the results of all the hard work that has gone into this project.
It will be a fantastic resource for both local and family historians. :D

Hello Lesley,
I would be very grateful if you would post when this goes live as I would like to FB and tweet the news out to the Kent OPC.
Thank you,

It is, indeed, terrific news. ;D
But, it leaves us first-gen Canadians and expats a little in left field. :(
I've commented on the article on the Kent Messenger site to learn if there are any plans to open the archive to a wider field.

I saw a comment on another forum I belong to that "For people in the UK this will be a free search but there will be a small charge for anyone overseas."
I don't know how official that is, or its source. It will be interesting to see if you get a response from KM.

Hi Scintilla,
Thanks for the wink. I hadn't noticed that in the article in the online version of the announcement. Haven't heard yet from anyone concerning my comment on the article but I also realized, when I came back to this forum thread that Lesley's contact details are at the beginning of it. So, I am going to try contacting her directly and see what happens.
I'll post the answer, if suitable, on this thread.
Regards,
Susan

Hi,
I've now heard back from Lesley, who advises that a charge of GB4.99 will be levied to people outside of the U.K., which will allow 5 days of searching. What I don't have the answer to is if there is going to be a limit placed on the number of searches and download of images in that same time frame.
Regards,
Susan

more good news for those of you with ancestors from Kent - the Kent Messenger Group are putting thousands of pages from their newspaper archive online this month, and they're going to be free to search for everyone in the UK. The archive will include issues of the South Eastern Gazette (forerunner of the Kent Messenger) from 1852-1912;
-
do you have a link addie for that please... and folk outside of UK will need to find a way to access... could that be discussed please?
thank you southee

Hi all,
Kent Messenger archive can be accessed here:
http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/digitalarchive.aspx (http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/digitalarchive.aspx)
For a search of the archive and to register go here:
http://www.ukpressonline.co.uk/ukpressonline/?sf=KM (http://www.ukpressonline.co.uk/ukpressonline/?sf=KM)
Once you register you then get the option to "Shop" - a link at the top of the window, from which you are ushered through to a shopping basket and a choice of payment options. Right now the price is GB4.99 for 10 days for Canada.
Sincerely,
Susan

Couldn't find too much about my OH's family until I tried his gggrandfather in Staplehurst. Over twenty years he made various court appearances for stealing three sacks of peas, a bushel of turnips,
a hand saw . He was up for assaulting someone and being assaulted and poaching. I do love a rogue.
At least he now seems a real person instead of a collection of dates.

"Tens of thousands of South Eastern Gazette pages, the forerunner of the Kent Messenger, from 1852 to 1912 are being put online as a fully searchable archive." This is now up and running and is free to those in UK.
