I wonder if anyone can help - I have spent hours trying to find the family link between these two people. Margaret Jane Freezer (born Sept Qtr 1875 in Gressenhall, Norfolk) is our direct ancestor. Her parents were Thomas Freezer (b1823 Beetley Norfolk, died 1880 ditto) and Mary Ann Winter (born 1831 Gressenhall died 1905 Mitford Norfolk). She married John Stainthorpe Marsay and they lived in and around the Middlesbrough area. Their firstborn son, who died in infancy, was named David Lothian Marsay. The family story is that she pined for the sea (because she had lived with her 'grandfather', a mariner, in Whitby), and died young of a broken heart. I therefore tried to find out about this grandfather. What I did find is that in the 1881 census she still lived with her parents in Norfolk, but in 1891 she lived with her 'cousin', David Lothian, a mariner, in Ruswarp near Whitby. David's father, Edward Lothian (born 1818 in Robin Hoods Bay, died 30 November 1896 in Whitby, married to Mary Hodgson 1821-9.3.1892) was also a mariner, as was David's elder brother, also Edward Lothian. The graves of Edward junior and David Lothian are in Fylingdales churchyard. I have followed all Frazer/Freezer, Winter and Lothian family lines but have failed to find the blood link between Margaret Freezer/Frazer and David Lothian. Any suggestions? Thank you very much for any help.

Did the family drop the surname Marsay? there are many Marsay families that come from Staithes, they believe Marsay was the name ( or at least sounding like it) of a man shipwrecked off the coast near Staithes in the 1700's.......

Hi Lee,
Many thanks for your reply.
Margaret Frazer/Freezer's only connection with the Marsay family is that she married John Stainthorpe Marsay.
As far as I know, the Lothians had no connection with any Marsay family.
Still trying to work out how Margaret was related to her 'cousin', David Lothian.
The Marsays from Staithes could well be related to my Marsay family (it is a massive family!), so I welcome any more info.
All the best

Hi all
Margaret Jane Freezer was my Gt Grandfather's sister. Margaret was a cousin to David Lothian because his "wife" Sarah was in fact Margaret's cousin. Sarah was born Sarah Jane Winter who was born in Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire in 1851. She was previously "married" to a Mr Whaley according to the 1851 census but was a widow. It took me a long time to work out the relationship.
So far I have not been able to find any marriages of David after his first wife died on the 7 October 1878 at Robin Hood's Bay.
Look forward to hearing from you both and your connections.
Regards
Lesley

Hi Lesley and Julie,
I am so sorry not to have replied to your messages before - I have only just seen the link to your replies.
Thanks a lot for the photo of Thomas Marsay - I am doing the family history of another child of Margaret Freezer.
And thanks, Lesley for the info about Margaret's connection with the Lothian family, which I will follow up.
All the best

David Lothian born 20 Sept 1847 Robin Hoods Bay married Sarah Jane Winter born Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire who is my 1st cousin three times removed. The marriage was hard to find because they got married in Scotland on the 11 August 1882 at the Star & Garter Hotel in Linlithgow, Scotland!!!!
