Morning All,
Can anybody offer any suggestions..
I've got the usual info from the censuses of various ancestors - addresses, family members etc, but what can I do to find similar details, or any details, in-between the censuses?
Thanks,
Tony

Hello and a warm welcome to Rootschat
Birth/marriage/death certs of events between censuses will often give addresses. Birth certs will give parents names and mothers maiden name, occupation of the father etc. Marraige certs give occupations, witneeses can sometimes be family members too.
Wills can sometimes be a mine of information of all sorts.
If they had a business, then trade directories are an interesting little addition.

Hi Tony,
Like lizdb,I would suggest the trade directories. You can find some for free on www.historicaldirectories.org. You can search by county and they have a good date range across the 19th century.
Hope this helps a little :)

Thanks both,
Sorry, I wasn't very clear, I'm not a new Roots member, I've been a member for years, I just don't post many topics!
I've got lots of certificates for birth, marriage and death and a couple of Wills and newspaper cuttings for various ancestors. But I never thought of trade directories. Would any of those directories include employees because I don't think any of my ancestors had their own businesses.

no, sadly not ....

I found school records to be very informative, held at local record offices.
Also rate books, for the area.
Leases - again found at record offices. They were miners, and leased from the mining company.

If you're lucky some people put their actual employers company name on the 1911 census.

Thanks for all the tips and advice. Much appreciated.

The school log books may be able to tell you more about the children and father.
School log books:
School Records / School Log Books
1870-Current Day (although 100 year rule applies) School registers provide pupils names, date of birth, addresses, fathers names and fathers occupation and years of attendance if they left to go to another school this would also be noted. Some have a brief explanation about the family.
School Log Books were filled in weekly by the head teacher give attendance figures and note extraordinary events.
From 1862 statutory admission and discharge registers began to be kept by the head teachers of schools receiving government funding, you will discover that many of these commence only in 1880 when schooling became compulsory betwixt the ages of 5 and ten, though local districts could make it from 1870.
School attendance registers were compiled by local education authorities after 1875 these disclose similar information as well as the placement of youngsters in schools throughout the county.
The particulars registered concerning the deaths and births of children submitted to the local education authority (LEA) by the district registrars record the date and place of each event the child’s name, sex his or her fathers name and the description and abode of the informant

Poor law records such as workhouse records and even removal orders post 1834 can be good.
In December 1878 my ancestors applied for poor relief. The info give was a huge wealth. It gave the names, ages, residence and their residences in the last 18 months, place of marriage and reason for seeking relief. This was in Holborn, London.

My Great, Great Grandfather was a shoemaker, but I cannot find him in any trade directory. Were all tradesmen entered or only if they chose to be included?

The trades directories were commercial works and as such the vast majority of them contained only paid entries

how about street directories not the trade ones :)
-
The 1923 directory of Camden in London lists my ancestor at his address at 99 Kings Road.

The Directories whether Trade or Street variety are always worth checking (like any potential source) but their potential limitations should always be borne in mind.

Several years ago I was able to access my own school records at the local record office, I think they were open after 30 years? I found copies of prize giving leaflets at evening events and I was listed in it!
But other information included, date of entry, date of leaving, father, address.
Also found Punishment log books, - I wasn't listed!
The other school books I found information in were a transcript from Glam FHS.
