Post by: soofie on Monday 04 April 05 13:09 BST (UK)
I have a death of a 13 yr old child registered in 1857 as at the Union Workhouse, Great Bolton. I am looking for any information on the rest of the family.
Father- Samuel Worrall 53 yrs
Mother- Eliza Worrall 46 yrs
Siblings- Ann 24 yrs,  John 22 yrs,  Thomas 15 yrs and Eliza 10yrs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for all your wonderful work.

Hi there
Just done a lot of work on my own Worrall families in Rochdale/Oldham/Manchester. I have the following, but don't know if it is at all helpful or related to your family of concern.

1851 - 35 Hollis Street, St Andrew, Leeds
Samuel Worrall is 43 and a spindle & fly maker from Skipton, Yorks. Eliza is his wife from Manchester. Their children are John, 11 (Rochdale); Samuel 6 (Salford); Thomas 4 (Bolton).

In 1861 Samuel is lodging with the West Howarth family at 43 Bell Lane Bury. He is listed as married but is not living with the family and he is still working as a spindle & fly maker.

In 1871 it looks as though he is working as an artist and book seller. He is lodging with William Brough and family in Broughton Road, Salford.

In 1871 Eliza, age 55, appears to be living as an artist/painter in Albert Road Bolton along with Thomas and Eliza. In 1861 there is an Ellen, age 45, listed as a landscape painter in Brindle Court Bolton with son John also a landscape artist and his wife Caroline; Thomas and Eliza (so I suspect Ellen and Eliza are one and the same). If they were flip-flopping with painting and earning money, that may be why there is a connection with the workhouse.

Cheers

Thanks Lynne,
I have worked out all the gaps since 2005 plus a lot of other interesting info.
Are you related to this line?
Both Thomas Hirst Worrall and John Worrall emigrated to Australia. I am descended from John.

No, I am not related to this line. My Worrall line is from the Hollinwood/Failsworth area of Lancashire.

Cheers

Hello Sue,
I am involved in local group researching the history of Embsay where Samuel Worrall lived. I saw your messages under a Castleton Mills thread from 2005 and left you a message a few months ago.
I am also in touch with Leonie Worrall who lives in Sydney and is a direct descendant of Samuel Worrall and Thomas Hirst Worrall who emigrated to Australia in 1883.
She also left a message under the Castleton Mills thread.
We would both love to hear from you and share our research.
