Title: St Mary's Pro Catherdral - Baptisms & Marriages
Post by: HugoBeauchamp on Sunday 22 August 10 09:21 BST (UK)
Would anyone know if the LDS were involved in the filming of the Baptism & Marriage Registers of St Mary's Pro Catherdral particularly the period c 1815 to 1890?

I know the NLI has microfilms of them but I need to be able to view them at my local LDS Family History Centre in the UK!

You can check the LDS online catalogue-

Thanks but no matter how I search, can't seem to find anything to do with the Pro Cathedral on the LDS site. I understand that records for the Pro Cathedral are likely to be included in the 'remaining RC Parishes for Dublin City' on Irish Genealogy, hopefully by the end of this year.

The Church is also called St Mary's RC (but, I think, not the only one of that name in Dublin) and it's address is Marlboro(ugh) Street.

I don't know whether it might be listed under either of these.

Otherwise the films are held at the National Library in Dublin so I don't know if you could call, email or write to them to ask about whether they are LDS films?

Thank you for the thought Dudley.

I have a few calls to make tomorrow morning!

You may be interested to now that 'Irish Genealogy' updated their site on the 18th to show whcih of the parishes (all religions) are on line, their addesses where appropriate and the periods covered.

It can be seen here http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/record_list.html a very helpful addition!

Thanks, yes I'd spotted that but hoped that it indicated that the next tranche had been added but sadly, haven't found any more new records for my family yet.

However, i shouldn't be greedy as the ones that I have so far have been very useful.  Especially as they include a baptism with birth details for someone who doesn't appear to have been registered.

On this subject, does anyone know if, in the 1870s, Ireland had a two-stage registration system like in England so that local registers might possibly have entries that accidentally did not get passed on to the national register?  And, if so, can these local registers still be accessed?

Hi Hugo,

Like you, I am waiting for St Mary's, Marlborough St. records to come online. If you find out when genealogy.ie plans to publish them, please let us know. Otherwise it's back to 'fingers crossed and hope for the best'.

Dara.

The system, I believe, was the same here as in England in that the local registrar recorded the details and then sent copies of the records to Dublin for inclusion in the complete Ireland register books and index - as now held by the GRO.

I think at least some of the regional books may still exist - but I've never investigated these. (e.g. Cork, Carlow)

Thanks Shane,

We've searched high and low for a marriage for which there seems to be no good reason why it would not have happened about the right dates.

I've even been very flexible about dates in case the 1911 is covering up for a child who was born a little early for the marriage but still can't find it anywhere.

I'm hoping that the central Dublin RC marriages will be added to the Irish geneealogy website soon but if it's still not there then I can only think of looking for a local registry office where it might have been recorded.

Hi
I am very curious about this church because I have been researching the Glovers. I have been told one of my ancestors was buried in a vault in this church. Her name was Catherine Matailda Glover and there's an memorial plaque of Catherine inside this church? Does anyone know if this is true?
Catherine was an roman catholic, she was an organist for this church for many years and same goes for her husband Prof. John William Glover. They were well known musical family in Dublin for many years. Their children were also well known conductors, composers. harpists and opera singers.

I would love to see the picture of memorial plaques in this church

Any info would be appericated
Best wishes
Kerry

Hi,
What a coincidence! I was in the Cathedral just the day before you posted, looking for this very plaque. It's now kind of hidden away within the shop/office area, but I was allowed in to see it. Only my phone-camera with me and the photo is awful, but I've managed to transcribe the wording (attached)
