Post by: truebritmega on Saturday 21 August 10 15:14 BST (UK)
Hi there.. im looking for the mother, of a Jenny (thats her birth name) Copley Carr (copley is her middle name, shes not a double barelled coply-carr lol)

Birth:  Jun 1844 - Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Yorkshire - West Riding

Her dads name is James Carr, born 1810, Hunslet,Leeds but I cant seem to find the mothers name, some have suggested "Martha" but I havent found anything definitive yet

Anything? anyone? I dont really want to have to get her birth certa as this is a more distant line of the tree

Martha was born in Lincolnshire and there is a marriage in Louth in September 1838 of a James Carr to a Martha Hay. Ref Sept,1838, Louth 14 621.

Could be your couple.

According to 1851 census, Martha was born in Holton le Clay, Lincs and on the Pilot IGI site, there is a birth of a Martha Hay 11 Feb 1816, parents Thomas Hay and Ann.

And also on the pilot site, there is a birth of a James Carr 05 Jun 1809, in Birstall, Yorkshire, parents Joseph Carr and Sarah.  Interestingly, given that he was a Wesleyan minister on the 1851 census, this was a non-conformist record.

yes that is interesting, but I did also find a birth for James on the IGI for 1819 too, with the Hunslet address for his birth (hi father also was from hunslett  and from google books results, i saw a piece about james's father (i think) as it told of a ...pastes..

Jane (Jenny) Copley (Gen. II) Jane was baptized in Arian Chapel on Dec. 25, 1769. She is called Jenny in her father's will (1787). At the time of the settling of her father's estate, she was married to James Carr of Hunslet

which would seem to fit, seeing as Our James.. was also found born in Hunslet, and named his daughter Jenny Copley?

That sounds plausible until you look at the 1851 census, where James' birth place was given as Leeds (Birstall is about 6 miles from Leeds) and his age was given as 40, meaning he would have been born around 1810.

Another thought, as Jane (Jenny) Copley was baptised in 1769, that is 50 years before the James Carr was born in Leeds in 1809 to parents Joseph Carr and Sarah.

It is possible, therefore, that Jane (Jenny) Copley and her husband had a son called Joseph and that is why he gave his daughter the middle name Copley.  I can't believe that Jane (Jenny) Copley and her husband were the parents of a child born in 1809 (and it's impossible for her to have been the mother of the one you found in 1819).

oops, lol yes your right.... I hadnt actually worked the dates out there yet lolol (yes i knoiw im stupid lol )

This part of the family is more distant, so Im not gonna take it too far, but... w me, when theres something i cant find out, thats where i like to dig LOLOL hope that makes sense,,,

oops I mistyped earlier...

The igi I found was for a james carr born 1810...

Birth:  27 FEB 1810   Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire, England
and his dad is  Father:  James Carr   Mother: Mrs James Carr

Then i found a marriage of a James Carr to a Jenny Copley...

30 MAR 1789   Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England

so that woman in the book, Jane (jenny) Copley... could if she had Our James(1810) at age 41... be the mother?

and then our James, when he married Martha Hay, later named one of there children Jenny Copley Carr??

Yes that makes more sense.

Like you, I'm often chasing very distant family, especially when I'm stuck on more direct lines. ::)

yup, its hard to know how far to go tracing the tree..."sidewards"...  but the first wife of the james i was after (and yes Im sure it is martha hay so thank you very much) james's second wife, is my 3xgreat uncles daughter, im going as far really as just those childen (as there cousins of some kind) and i list who they  married but her married family I only go a touch into a lil usually

but this one was different, because he, james carr... had kids from a  first wife, so I chased him to differentiate his two sets of children (it appears he had no kids w his second wife so far) then I found this lil pizzle  lol and they always intrigue me lol

Thank you very... very much :)

This  family is indexed as 'CARY' in 1841 at Ancestry:

piece 1310/11 folio 29 page 6
Primrose Hill
(Knotttingley)

James CARR 30 Wesleyan minister
Martha 20
Charlotte 1
Thomas 1week
/
Mary HAIGH 25 F.S.
(all but Martha born in county)

James is not listed in the methodist Archives Biographical Index (http://www.library.manchester.ac.uk/specialcollections/collections/methodist/using/biographicalindex/)
but there is a Henry Lascelles CARR, born in Knottingley, who is described as a son of Wesleyan minister James CARR.

However, his birth was registered in JUN Qtr 1841, so either he and 1 week old Thomas are the same person or there is a mistake somewhere, or it's a different James CARR.

The other question, probably not important, where is the daughter Hannah in 1841?
