Title: Electoral Rolls
Post by: Jill E on Saturday 21 August 10 06:22 BST (UK)
Is it possible to get copies of Electoral Rolls for Sydney in the mid 1930's to 1950's.

I have the Electorate that I am interested in but no idea where to go for the info.
I will be phoning the Electoral Office after this weekend....thought they might be too busy with the Election at the moment.

Electorates are Cook and Watson in Sydney

Hi

A number of NSW Electoral rolls are on Ancestry and are searchable by name, I'm not sure that local Electoral offices would have old rolls, you usually find them in local Archives or possibly the State Library of New South Wales.

Thanks for your reply
I used to belong to Ancestry but my subscription ran out and I dont really want to pay to join again just yet. I might later in the year but  just thought someone might know where to look.

Hi

Who are you looking for? I can have a look for you. Otherwise,  unless someone with local knowledge can help, you could ask the Electoral offices where old versions of there rolls would be but I would leave it for a few weeks as they will be extremely busy for a while yet.

Cando and Andy have given you a couple of pointers.

Ancestry's rolls are up to 1954 and don't have any for SA.  Australian National Library has later ones, as well as some State libraries.

You can often access Ancestry from local municipal libraries who have a library subscription - you usually have to go to the library for access.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I am looking for Robert George Templeman
I got him from the Ancestry Index

Electorate District - Cook, NSW in 1936,1937,1943

Electorate District - Watson, NSW in 1949,1854

And there is a death in 1989

It would also be interesting to see any Templemanswho were  living with him. I have been able to get his Army Service Records but have two conflicting names for a wife.

He has been very difficult to find out about him. Wish he had been on my list while I was with Ancestry.

I did visit the local library but Ancestry access is limited on the Library Version so could not find much for Austalian Records.

I live in an Electorate of one of the four Independants elected so looks like an interesting time in politics for our area.

Thanks to all who replied

I am surprised your local library's version doesn't have all the Aussie info.  My local library's version is wonderful as it is a world-wide sub so I can see things which my .au subscription doesn't cover.

Australian Cemetery Index:
Robert George TEMPLEMAN, died 11 Feb 1989, buried Griffith cemetery.

Back shortly with the electoral rolls.

Hi,

There is no Monumental Inscription for ROBERT at GRIFFITH.

Yes, I can give you the names of other TEMPLEMAN's in the area.
As I said, they are not at GRIFFITH.

Burial locations include WEST WYALONG, CARGELLIGO and BARMEDMAN.

I will now simply type the ELEVEN names  and you can advise if any are of real interest.  Happy to give details if so ;D

ALMA FRANCES, ANNIE, EDWIN ERNEST, FREDERICK JAMES, GEORGE JOSEPH, IVY MAUD, JOHN DUDLEY, LOUIS JOSEPH, NELLO DUDLEY, PERCY JOSEPH., STANLEY WILLIAM.

Thank You Sue

I am most interested in Robert.
I assume he was the  only one in Griffith Cemetery
I am trying to find out what happened to him. I have a copy of his Military Record....he gives his wife as Marjorie.
I cannot find his birth and do not know his parents. He certainly is a mystery.
I think I will have to buy his death certificate to fine out more....hopefully that is him.

Not sure where the other Templemans come into it, they maybe no relation at all. I do have info on some of them. They all seem to be related, the family of two brothers.

Thanks again for your help

Hi

ROBERT E.(probably EDGAR) TEMPLEMAN was born 1888

REG. 21156 In 1888    TEMPLEMAN, ROBERT E. father ROBERT E. mother MARION E. at MORUYA

His parents were ROBERT E and MARION E. (probably EMMELINE)
They were married in1883.

Reg. 4065 In 1883  TEMPLEMAN, ROBERT to CARTER,    MARIANE E. at BRAIDWOOD

ROBERT E married IDA DASECKE in 1914

Reg.7841In 1914 TEMPLEMAN ,ROBERT E. to DASECKE, IDA M. at KYOGLE

ROBERT EDGAR died in 1961

Reg.16120 In 1961 TEMPLEMAN, ROBERT EDGAR father  ROBERT mother MARION KYOGLE

His mother MARIAN/MARION  died in 1947

Reg. 16165 In1947 TEMPLEMAN, MARION EMMALINE father ROBERT aged82 YRS at PENRITH

The man of the Service History (above) is related to MARION/MARION.

He may be her son having taken an unlikely 20 years off his age.  ::)
 He may be her grandson.
She was still living at his time of enlistment.

I am trying to find out what happened to him. I have a copy of his Military Record....he gives his wife as Marjorie.JILL

The person who Sue has listed with a WW2 military record is not the Robert TEMPLEMAN who was living in Matraville.

The Matraville man,  Robert George TEMPLEMAN,  is the one who has parents John and Jessie, wife Laura Mabel and was born in 1904.  Matraville is the address in the Cook and Watson electorates (the name for the electoral subdivision changes but the street and suburb address remain the same).

On looking at the NSW BMDS again I see this death:

1962  Robert George TEMPLEMAN, parents JOHN and  JESSIE, death registered at  NEWTOWN  #35830

It would appear likely that this is the death for the R G TEMPLEMAN who lived in Matraville.

So not sure which Robert you are looking for.

Hi Judith,
Yes, I have tried in the above screed to help clarify and differentiate the 2 ROBERTS.

Waiting to hear now from Jill so she may let us know whether she thinks the  one who was the son of MARIAN is the correct man afterall
[or is there yet another ??? ???]

Thanks for all the info given

The Robert George Templeman I am looking for was brought up by Marion (Marianne ) Templeman. This is his Grandmother by adoption.
Marion Templeman is given as his NOK on his Army Records. I am assuming this Army Record is the one for my Robert George beacause of the DOB given and how many Robert Templeman of the correct age and name would have a Marion as a NOK.
DOB is given as 11 Nov 1918

On the Army Records there is an added note that he had a wife Marjorie. There is a marriage in 1940 of Robert Templeman to Marjorie Brigden in Sydney.

I cannot find anything on Robert and Marjorie after this date.

I am sure this is the Robert I am trying to find

That's good news Jill.  The Matraville man is not your man and obviously you'll need to be careful in looking at other records as there are the two men with similar names alive at the same time.

Will now have a hunt and see if we can find anything else about your chap.

Hi Jill

Just to clarify a couple of things, where did you get a middle name of George from? Both his military record and his marriage index only have him as Robert Templeman.

Was Marion/Marian his mother or grandmother? You refer to Marion as his adoptive grandmother but in the military record she is his mother.

Hi Jill,
I would like to recommend you take a little time to read the thread with care as a number of points have been noted which you are seeming to still be unsure of.

Have you looked at my reply #20 which sets out the relationship between ROBERT EDGAR TEMPLEMAN  and MARION/MARIAN?

Post by: Jill E on Wednesday 25 August 10 01:40 BST (UK)
Yes Robert Edgar Templeman is a son of Robert and Marion (Marianne) Templeman

Later Marion either adopted or fostered a son called Robert George Templeman (not sure if this is his birth name or one given to him by Marion.)

I have a copy of a birth certificate for a SON of Robert George Templeman born 1939.
Robert George is shown as age 20 at this time. The mother is named as Elizabeth. Elizabeth is later shown as being single so not sure that any marriage took place.
This son is living and does not know his parents. I cannot give his name for privacy reasons.  He lived with one of Marions daughters. This aunty did not have any children of her own so no descendants to ask.

I am going to see if I can get a copy of the death certificate, hoping that the George Robert Templeman buried in Griffith is the one.

I will keep you posted

Jill

Hi
Information about births in NSW for few years after 1909 (end of online indexes) can sometimes be found.

You may possibly get this assistance if you start a new thread with a heading which clearly states the period you are looking for.

You may locate the birth of the boy ROBERT which you think is around 1818

Hi all!

I'm unsure if anyone from this thread is still active, but I thought it worth a shot.

I believe my mother is the daughter of the Robert Templeman in those military records listed previously as the birthdate matches up. We know very, very little about him as my nan and him parted ways when my mother was about 5 (in 1974.)

I've had a really hard time finding anything other that those records because I'm not very clued up on researching.

Hello Tasha,

I am very sorry but your reply to Jill's post has sadly bounced back to us because it looks like her email address is no longer working. I did do a little search for Jill but could only find the contact details we currently have. Old members do log in and I hope that this will be the case here but in the mean time you may wish to start off a "new topic" to help with your own line of research.
