Hi,
Looking for some information on my great grandfather James Thompson.
The information I have on him is that he was born in 1869 in Widnes (not sure when he died). Son of Samual and Jane and husband to Elizabeth.
He was a freemason and have been told he could have owned the George Hotel (pub) in the West Bank (I think Waterloo rd) which has been demolished.
Would anyone have any information on him or him owning the George Hotel (pub)?
Cheers,
Phil

Hi
James Thompson in 1901 lived at 64 Waterloo Road Widnes, occupation Licensed Victualler.
Check out.. All about Widnes..website, it has a virtual tour of the West Bank area in 1891, the landlord of the George Hotel, John Andrews is mentioned. Checked on ancestry 1891 John Andrews and sure enough the address was George Hotel 64 Waterloo Road!
Cheers ;)

hi Dodger,
what a coincidence! I have just started searching for my family history and "googled" Thompson Samuel family history and found your comment. MY great grandfather was James Thompson and my grandfather was Samuel Thompson.
We must be related. I see you are in Australia, so am I!!! I live at Narrawallee 2539.
I have some photographs which I post later.
Perhaps we can do some joint family history together?
-
hi Dodger123
I received your personal message. Unfortunately I cannot reply directly until I have made 3 postings.
( I think!)
You are correct, we have a mutual great great grandfather in Samuel Thompson,
My grandfather was Samuel Thompson brother of Rueben Thompson and your great grandfather James.
According to my sister the family did own a number of hotels including the George.
Other hotels which may have a connection with the family are the Albert, Albion, "Snig Inn, which was the Mersey
and the pub at Cuerdley.
The Penney family appear to be the connection with beer.
It must be in the genes because my son, Richard, was awarded the most popular beer at the J R Wetherspoon beer festival in the UK 2 years in a row! (now you can work out my name and residence at Narrawallee so give me a ring!)
When I visited UK in 1972, Aunt Eva,daughter of Samuel Thompson and Annie (nee Spruce) told me that a large number of my relatives were buried at St Lukes Farnworth
Do you live in Australia? Where?
Keep in contact. I'll post photographs when I take some Digital photos

Hi, Goanna38
Got another pub for you the Railway Inn - called the Junction hotel by the locals, and I have a photo of it with Samuel Thompson standing out the front which I will send onto you.
Do you have any dob's for the other children of Samuel Thompson (snr)?

Hi,
I'm trying to find the marriage details of my great grandfather James Thompson DOB Jun 1869 in Widnes and DOD 11 July 1920 (Section 6 Farnworth Church, Widnes, Cheshire, UK) it appear to be a mystery :(. He married an Elizabeth, believe her last name to be Hunt. First record of them both together is the 1901 census with a child Jane of 11 months and living at 64 Waterloo road.
I was told he may have married before Elizabeth and she had died, but can not verify this.
If anyone could point me in the right direction or offer any help it would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Phil

James Thompson married Elizabeth Hunt at All Saints church , Liverpool in 1899..... Liverpool 2019/LP/9/61
you will find the full details including the certificate number on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk
allan :)
just checked...a possible marriage for James Thompson to Ellen Collins ... Prescot registration in 1888 ...this would make James 19 at the marriage ....if you can find James Thompson with Ellen in 1901 census, you can eliminate this marriage.....allan
-
Thanks Allan, you will not believe me when I tell you I looked on this site last night and could not find it :-[ .
Cheers,
Phil

Hiya Phil....NONE of these records are on Lan-opc which suggests that James Thompson was Catholic....the marriage to Ellen Collins was in either Prescot Register Office or Registrar attended...this suggests a Catholic church as well...I have found a death of Ellen Thompson in 1895 in Prescot aged 31...this would mean she would have been 24 at the marriage ....so you have to look at the bride 24 and the groom 19 ...
James Tompson b 1869 St Helens ......SH/84/86 lancsbmd this birth cert will give you his father

James and Elizabeth Thompson, had a son named Ernest (born Dec 1905), in 1941 he was serving as Sapper Ernest Thompson with the 7 Bomb Disposal Coy., Royal Engineers stationed in Bristol. On the 27th march 1941, he was one of 8 members of the Company to be killed whilst defusing bombs that had been dropped during the blitz.
His death occurred at 13:30 hours when a delayed action bomb exploded. He was buried a few days later on the 30th march at Plymouth Weston Mill Cemetery. At the time of his death he was married to Ellen Jane Thompson, (nee Worral), whom he had married in 1928.
His parents James and Elizabeth Thompson are the same Thompsons who lived at 64 Waterloo Road, Widnes.

Hi, could you post the picture of the "Raliway Inn" up here ? My gggrandfather Henry Guttridge was recorded as staying there in 1861. The family later lived in Water St. Then in 1901 my ggrandfather (also Henry) is recorded as lodging with John Thompson (who appears to be the son of Samuel Thompson) in James St.
