:D Hi Everyone...I have a query and it is about a disappearance of one of my relatives
His name was Michael Metz
This is what I know of the family...Father is Robert Metz originally from Germany...Mother Amelia nee Vogt. Charles was born in 1870 at Berrima died Tasmania, Michael born 1871 Berrima and William born 19.11.1873 Berrima died 23.5.1958 Taree NSW.
Charles went to Tasmania and went into Politics at Launceston and was involved in Shale mining etc married down there and had 4 girls 3 survived. William married Christina May Fitzgerald
And Michael...well I cannot find Marriage or Death details of him...story goes...He had a big fight with his father Robert and took off, family said maybe he changed his surname to either that of aunt AUER or grandparents..VOGT. Either way I have looked for a michael in both those surnames as well. Another family tale is he may have gone to Western Australia...
Is there any way of looking up legal name changes like that?
Any info would be gratefully appreciated, thanks

He wouldn't have been the Thomas Michael Metz listed in the 1910 WA Electoral Roll (occ: stonemason), would he?

Hi Lin Up a Tree...no I had not seen either....where/which sites did u find those one...as I said I am still newish to this and so been using the offical wa bdm, qld bdm etc sites...the australian index site, never heard of it...
I do know his father was a stonemason and that he (robert) won the tender and built the Saint Patricks sutton forest church which was opened in 1879. I do not know when Robert came to australia (1 story he came with a paternal aunt and was only 9 known in germany as Karl Robert Metz, no other reference to a brother etc)(another source said he was on a ship and listed as stonemason...so trying to work that issue out too.
I do know from newspaper clippings that charles would come to melbourne etc for board meetings about the various mines he was with...so maybe Michael went down there and worked for Charles

so you've recently got the bug, eh! that's awesome :D
i found both references on Ancestry, it's been invaluable for me throughout my own research journey.
the stonemason link sounds promising. let me see if i can find anything else for you.

Hi Cando! :*)
You're right about the A website but it's still got plenty of good nuggets IMHO ;D
Sapphire mentioned Michael was born 1872, so the SA ref sounds promising!
I see in the Australia Birth Index there's also Michael Metz b. 1871 (Robert, Amelia) Berrima, New South Wales.
Also, Sapphire (wrt Michael's dad): I also found these 2 pieces, there's links so you have a couple more websites to add to your research arsenal.
According to the NSW State Records (http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au), there was a certificate of naturalisation issued:
Name: METZ Robert
Native place: Germany
Date of certificate: 10 Aug 1868
Ref: 3//88//[4/1202]//130
I also saw this in the online Aust newspapers site:
The Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday 11 June 1901
ROBERTSON, Monday
Robert Metz, stonemason, a resident of Moss Vale died suddenly yesterday afternoon while driving in a sulky at the junction of the Robertson and Burra- wang roads. Deceased was accompanied by his daughter at the time.

Perhaps a transcription of the death certificate may be useful eg place of birth, occupation. This gentleman died in a hospital or place of care so the information may not be helpful.
Information on transcription services in South Aus.

SORRY...that must of been a typo...Michael was born 1871....three kids...1870, 1871 1873

would a coopy of Robert's naturalization cert help any...re age when came to australia, seeing their is 2 stories about age when arrived. And YES I have every person i come up against for research there is always moree questions and howcomes lol. AND MEGA YES I am now totally infected with this disease...lol ;D ::) :D ;)
-
ha ha, i get your enthusiasm totally ;D
re: certs of nat -- actually that i don't know! the NSW state library website might have more info on them, or you might be able to ask them...?
re: robert's children -- so did he also have a daughter (if that newspaper clipping was correct)? and for his emigration have you managed to find his death cert -- i can't remember offhand but some certs mention place of birth & time in the colony...
re: michael -- it will be exciting to find out if he had an alias thomas/metters -- the details that cando supplied are very juicy; hope you can follow this lead and let us know!
-
Nat Certs...I have another family members alien/nat cert and his nat cert and on both it states his origin of birth, how long he was in the country for (listing all locations of living since arrival) it states his age upon arrival and which ship he arrived on.
Re Daughter yes that is the same Robert Metz...1st marriage young wife died age 24, childbirth. 2nd wife died age 24 childbirth and 3rd marriage lasted longer thankfully...in my DIRECT line same both parents there was only the 3 boys, but Robert himself fathered quite a number of children in his time. ;)
But yes will be very interesting to try and find if this Metters is in deed my missing Metz...kind of is similar, and again now to find out IF he changed it legally...hmmmmm. a single question turns once again into a thousand with no solution...heehee
-
I doubt the name was changed legally. I think you need to see the death certificate.
You can purchase a copy of Robert METZ naturalization from State Records here

ah, gotcha! and all the millions of questions, certainly keeps one occupied doesn't it ;D
just found this page which might be of interest re: changing of names: http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/guides-and-finding-aids/archives-in-brief/archives-in-brief-35

Another family tale is he may have gone to Western Australia.
sapphireblue67
and perhaps he was the Thomas METTERS who died in South Australia so would he legally change his name in New South Wales :-\
Cando
-
:-\ well the only way to totally DISPROVE that theory Cando about changing his name to Metters in SA is to try and find a Michael Metters BIRTH somewhere of the same year...as we have seen it does fit year of birth for My Michael Metz
:'( lol...now it just turns into a bigger puzzle then before...oh u gotta love my family. I am finding this very typical of everything/everyone I search
-
and a birth for a Thomas METTERS.
