Title: GULLICK - Somerset
Post by: JeremyCH on Thursday 19 August 10 15:22 BST (UK)
I have been working on the Gullick family from Stoke Lane (it may also be spelt Gullock) covering the period 1760 - 1875 but in particular I am interested in the period 1770 - 1820 as it relates to two families.

Joseph Gullick married Mary Clifford May 1760 and Henry Gullick married Jane Cable Sept 1791.

I would be very interested to share my findings with anyone

Jeremy

I am also interested in the following families

Bryant from Ashwich / Stoke Lane
Vagg from again Ashwich / Stoke Lane and Doulting

Hello Jeremy,

I have Gullick names in my tree as I have many ancestors from the Stoke Lane area. There is Sarah Gullick bc1724, Stoke Lane, who married Israel Stock. Also Ann Gullick, bc1790 Leigh on Mendip, who married George West.

Ann and George West and buried in Leigh on Mendip and I saw their grave there recently.

I have also seen the name Vagg in the records.

Hi Jeremy & Jo

I have in my tree a Martha Gullick (born c 1740?) who married Abraham Clavey at Stoke Lane on 17 July 1764. Do you have any note of her in your researches? I have not been able to trace her parents, but I gather the Stoke Lane PRs are in a poor condition for much of the 18th century

Steve

My records start a few years later with Joseph Gullick. If you would like to have a Gedcom file of this group drop me an email address via a PM and it will be on its way to you.

Thanks Jeremy - a PM will be on its way later today. I notice that at your Joseph's marriage the witnesses are both given as Joseph Gullick (according to the Somerset Hundreds transcript) - I would guess one of these is the groom's father. A Joseph Gullick was also witness at my Martha's wedding - could they have been siblings?

Steve,

No you have thrown me as I am not sure as you mention the "Somerset Hundreds transcript " - can you enlighten me a little here please. I have been using the data in FreeReg and FreeBMD so it looks like there is another source of data.

Sorry but still new to this as I inherited lots of papers from my father and his sister which I am trying to make sense of so bear with me. :)

GedCom file coming by e-mail

Hi Jeremy

PM received & replied to - thanks. Its well worth joining the Yahoo group - Somerset Hundreds. Just go to Forum on Rootschat, click on Somerset (in England section) & there is a Somerset resources section. Click on that & find a topic headed "Yahoo Groups for Somerset 100s". This will tell you how to join (everything is free, but you need to register). The source material is grouped under the various Hundreds (ancient local administration divisions). Chew Stoke & Chew Magna are in the Chew Hundred (there is a list on the site so you can find which parish is in which Hundred - its worth joining every Hundred that you think you might need). In the individual Hundred there is a "files" section that leads to a host of transcripts on a parish by parish basis. Many of these will already be on FreeReg, but not all. There are also some photos, trees & a forum. Some parishes still have no transcripts at all - there is a lot of work to be done - I'm working on Chewton Mendip myself at the moment.

I also noted from the Somerset RO website that there is a will for a Joseph Gullock from Stoke Lane in 1825 - do you have this?

Regards

Steve

I have had a look to find the will on the Somerset RO website but not luck do you have the page URL by any chance.

Many thanks for the Somerset Hundreds idea as I am in the process of joining the various groups

Jeremy

Its only an index on the Somerset site I'm afraid - under Estate Duty wills there is one for Joseph Gullick Stoke Lane 1825 - you go to the index & type in a name to find them. To see the document you'll have to go to Taunton (the RO reopens as the Somerset Heritage Centre at the end of September)

Hi

Probably just coincidence but I have William Gullock marrying Sage Stocke in 1664 in Keynsham, Bristol if you get back a few more years it may be worth remembering.

Hello Jeremy
I finally have a bit of time to look at family history matters again.
I have come across your 2010 post on RootsChat offering to provide information about Joseph Gullick and Mary Clifford who married in 1760.  These are my direct ancestors but I know nothing about them apart from the names of their children and when they were baptised. Their daughter Mary, born 1763, was my link to them and I have a lot of information about successive generations.
Hope you are still working on your family history.
Merry Christmas
Elizabeth
