Title: Boer War

I have my husbands Great Grandmother in the 1901 census in Aberdeen and listed as 'soldiers wife'. I have tried to find records of him in the Boer war but not found any listings.
His name was Robert Lawrie (Laurie) and he was born in 1856 in Aberdeen.

His wife was Elizabeth Johan Angus (illegitimate- fathers name Kemp). In 1901 her and 4 of her children were at 67 Queen Street, Aberdeen.

Any ideas where I can do research into Boer War soldiers names?

Hi Ellen

You need to wait for Findmypast to publish records for men discharged 1900 to 1913. They are saying 'next month'.

In the meantime was his wife living in a barracks? If so, if you can find the name of a few officers - they are usually at the front of the census return - I can look them up in the army lists of the time and identify his regiment.

Also, where were the children born, and when?

Thanks for that info - no not barracks just a boarding house- all children born in Aberdeen except one son born Newcastle 1892

Hi Ellen

The headquarters of the Gordon Highlanders was in Aberdeen, but their two battalions were in India and Ireland in 1892. He may have been in one of the irregular mounted infantry units created just for the Boer War, or had a one year enlistment with the Regulars. Have you found him in 1881 or 1891?
