Looking for any information on Lock family of Charmouth Dorset. Father James Lock born about 1806 Catherston-Leweston and wife Ann.Census from 1851-1881 living in Charmouth Dorset. Lots of children born in Charmouth, including Emma b 1842 Stanton St Gabriels,Frederick b Catherston Leweston 1840,Alfred 1857 George 1851 Amanda 1861 Bessie 1865 William 1867. Can find no futher evidence of the children. Looking for parents of James Lock born @ 1806 and Anne his wife's last name. Think they may have married in Gloucester as several older children born there including my relative Heny Lock b 1834 Cheltenahm area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks Corinnas

Have you looked on the family search pilot site?
There is a James Lock marriage to Ann Hill 10/9/1839 St Paul Bristol Gloucester
Father John Lock

Thanks very much for that info but the marriage must have been prior to 1829 when their first child John was born.. Thanks

It is possible that that is a correct Marriage. James may have been married twice as being born c 1806 it is definitely possible.
Do you have a Birth Cert of one of the Children to ascertain Anns Maiden Name?
This is very important.
1841 they have a 12/10/8/7 and a large gap in childrens ages from the 7yr old to one aged 7mths, so it looks to me that James could have been married twice.
1841 Census
HO107/282/10/Whitchurch
James LOCK, 35
Ann, 25
John, 12
James, 10
Henry,8
William, 7
Frederic, 7mths

thanks trish. I hadn't considered another marriage but i will order a birth cert to ascertain mothers name. Hopefully I will be able to work this family out. My intereset is in Henry b Cheltenham Gloucester 1834 who emigrated to South Australia..... Kind regards Corinna....Australia

The problem is, only little Frederic will have a certificate. The others were born before 1837, so will only be recorded as baptisms in parish records.
You just have to find them.

Yes snowyw, Frederic is born post 1837 plus other children later.
It is worth getting any child post 1837's birth Cert and it will prove if the 1839 Marriage is correct. Then if she is Ann Hill I think it is worth the outlay to get the Marriage Cert, if only to see if there was only one Wife or not . It will show if James was a Widower and his Fathers name and occp.
I have looked for Cristenings with my resources without any luck unfortunately except for Frederick.
Frederick LOCK, 11 Oct 1840, Catherston-Leweston, Dorset
Parents James and Ann.
Let us know the outcome please corinnas.
There is this possible birth/christening for James also;
JAMES Lock, Birth 12 Sept 1806, Christened 24 October 1806, Union Chapel and Long Street Metting- Independant, Sherborne, Dorset
Parents WILLIAM and REBEKAH
Both from Familysearch Pilot, Extracted Records

Have a birth certificate now for daughter Emma who has mother listed as Ann Symmonds. Have also found an entry on A2A for a james Smith alias Lock who was removed with wife ann and children from Charmouth. I think now it is quite likely that James was married before, and therefore the children on 1841 census are not Anns except for frederic. All the other childrens birthplaces are listed as Cheltenham Gloucestershire and Ann hhis wife was born in upton on severn. Have found her in familysearch. Still unable to find first marriage. Any ideas anyone?

Has there been any luck going back further than James and ann? I just discovered alfred was my 2x great grandfather. I was always hitting a road block with him until now.
