Title: Royal Artillery in Newfoundland 1820s
Post by: andreajs on Tuesday 17 August 10 22:10 BST (UK)
Hi
I am trying to find out more about my ancestor William Wright who was in the Royal Artillery, according to his daughters marriage record he was a R.A Chelsea pensioner but unfortunately without more information i'm at a dead end with him.
He had two daughters in Newfoundland, one in Jan 1822 and one in May 1825 ( bap Sep) with his wife Lucinda but am unable to find his pensioner record as there are sooo many William Wrights and i have no idea of his birthplace.
Is there anywhere i can go with this to narrow down my search?
I think he was back at Woolwich by 1828 as the Scots church there has a baptism of another daughter to a William and Lucinda. There was also another one b1839 who gives her birthplace as Manchester on the census ( could have been based at Hulme barracks or even retird by then though)

Any clues would be much appreciated!!
Also tried to find a marriage between William and Lucinda but also a dead end.

Thank you
Andrea

Is it worth contacting Chelsea Hospital to see if they still have their old records to see whether there is a place/date of birth on it?  I know its a long shot but they might be able to point you in the right direction....
Have you been able to obtain the birth certs for the two daughters?  It will give a maiden name of the mother which might aid your search for the marriage.

I believe that all the historic records for Chelsea Hospital are at the National Archives, Kew.

Thank you both for your answers but i'm unable to get to the National Archives, some are on findmypast but don't know how to narrow my choices down..
If i get in touch with GRO would there definately be birth certs being as the births were before civil registration?
Thanks Andrea

Certificates were only introduced with civil registration in 1837, so before this the answer is no. However, I believe it is the GRO that has a record of BMDs recorded to military personnel from c1760 onwards.
