looking for a baptisms of Heny Lock about 1834 Cheltenham area. Father James and mother Ann. Have found them on census 1841 the family then appeared to move to Dorset. Any info about James Lock and Anns marriage also greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone Corinna

I will take a look for you in the archives. Do you have them in the 1851 to confirm place of birth? There are several churches in Cheltenham, let alone the surrounding area.

Thanks very much for your reply. I have Henry age 17 living in Charmouth Dorset by 1851. His POB is listed as Chillinham but on looking at original it is Cheltenham. Several other siblings born in Dorset but older siblings born in Cheltenham including william born about 1840. I assume the marriage was most likely in gloucester where the older children were born. Have hit a brick wall with this family with patchy IGI coverage and any help would be fantastic. Thank you Corinna..... Australia

Hi Corinna
As with Cheltenham, Gloucester has quite a few churches where the marriage may have taken place, but hopefully the marriage index will help here.
Anyway, I'll do my best.

I've just had a quick look at the family in 1851, and I suspect that the two born in Cheltenham were step-children of one of either James or Ann. Judging from birthplaces, I tend to think they were Ann's children from a previous marriage (or otherwise). Have you found them in 1841? I'll look later if not.

Sorry, I've just realised you have them in 1841. If they are in Whitchurch Canonicorum, then I continue to wonder about a second marriage. There is a large age gap between William and the baby (Frederic), and all the elder children are born out of county, so possibly all in Gloucestershire. I would guess at a marriage only a year or two before the 1841 census - there doesn't seem to be one in Gloucestershire, but there is a James Lock marriage in Bristol in Q3 1839 with two possible Anns, and another possible in Q1 1839. Bristol is part way between Cheltenham and Dorset so it seems feasible.
I think the surest way to sort this out is to get the birth certificate for Frederic or one of the younger children, then you will have the information needed to pinpoint the marriage.

Thanks for your suggestions. I hadn't considered another marriage. I will look a bit further. Corinna
