Title: HATCH & WOOD in Sheppey
Post by: gemini on Sunday 03 April 05 12:41 BST (UK)
I'm new to this site  :)

Looking for an Agnes Hatch born 1857, she died 29th June 1934 in Sheerness. she married a Mr Wood and had 4 sons and 4 daughters and the last known address was at Alexandra Road Sheerness. I am  not sure if there names was Edith, Nellie, Ethel, George, William, Arthur, Harry and Isabel. Agnes Hatch's father was Daniel Parker Hatch and mother possibly Jane Swinyard.

Daniel Parker Hatch born 18 Nov 1828 he had a brother Henry Valentine Hatch born 16 Feb 1840 in Sittingbourne Kent England. Daniel died 8 Sep 1913 in Sheerness Kent. His daughter Agnes wrote her Uncle Harry (in Australia)a letter with a memorium letting him know and in the letter she mention she had four sons and four daughters and that her married name was Wood and at the time of writing her address was in Alexandra Road Sheerness Isle of Sheppy. Agnes I am not sure of her birthdate could have been born in 1857 and her youngest child was 17 in 1913, she also had four grandchildren. Daniel and Henry had a sister Hannah and a father call William.

I found this on the internet
Death WOOD AGNES  77  MINSTER RD  29/06/34 Halfway Cemetary Sheerness Kent England

Does anyone recognise these names?

thank you very much, that is great.

How do I go about finding William Hatch, don't know his wife's name but they had sons Daniel Parker Hatch born 18 Nov 1828 I found his birth, Henry Valentine Hatch born 15 Feb 1840 I couldn't find his birth , I was told there were two sisters, one of them possibly named Hannah as on the marriage certificate she was the witness and her name was Hannah Thomsett and also  in one of the letters that Agnes Wood wrote to Henry Valentine Hatch she mention Aunty Hannah. Henry Valentine Hatch married Sarah Jane Candler born 9 Feb 1842 in Averstoke Hampshire I have her father as Samuel Candler and her mother as Bridget Slattery but haven't been able to find either parents bdm details also for William Hatch.
thanks

Hi

What I would suggest is trying to find Daniel, Henry HATCH etc. with their parents on the earlier census ie. 1861, 1851 and 1841.  You can post lookup requests on the Lookup Requests board for the appropriate county (ie. Kent Lookup Requests) giving names/ages/birthplaces etc. and where they are likely to be ie. any known addresses.

As in my previous posting, you can also search the 1861 census at http://www.1837online.com

The census will give you some idea of where they were born and then it is the parish registers to try and establish when/where they were baptised - this will give you the name of both parents hopefully ie. William HATCH and his wife.

If any of the children born to William HATCH (ie. Henry) were born post 1837 then you can search for their birth certificates which will give maiden name of mother:

Hello Gemini,

I know that you posted this message re:Agnes Hatch a long time ago now, but I've only just come across it in my own family tree research!
You mention that you think that Daniel Parker Hatch's wife may have been Jane Swinyard.  Jane Swinyard was my 3x great grandmother, and I don't think that she was married to Daniel, but it is true that an Abigail and a Katherine Hatch were living with Jane and her husband William Henry Swinyard in Faversham, Kent in 1861.  According to the census the Hatch sisters' relationship to the head of the household was 'mace', which I'd always assumed was a mistranscription of 'niece', so perhaps Jane was Daniel's sister.  If so, that would be a big help to me, as I've never been able to establish Jane Swinyard's maiden name!
I'd be grateful for any confirmation you might have one way or the other.
Best wishes,
RromHughes

There is a marriage William Henry SWINYARD to a Jane HUGHES 1824 at Faversham - would that be *your* Jane http://www.familysearch.org (select Record Search Pilot) ???

Hello Casalguidi,

Many thanks for that.  That is really useful confirmation (and it is *my* Jane!).  I'd discovered anecdotally that William Henry Swinyard and Jane married in Faversham in June 1824, but I hadn't found any confirmation of that until your posting today!
The problem is, I knew that Jane had to have been Jane Hughes at some stage, as she and William Swinyard's children all styled themselves "Hughes Swinyard" (which usually suggests either that the parents weren't formally married or one or both were of Gypsy origin).  But I don't know whether Hughes was her maiden name or the name of a previous husband.  My 2x great grandfather Stephen (Jane's son) was simply Stephen Hughes, but he lived with the Swinyards (and there wasn't that much of an age gap between him and the Swinyards' eldest child).  On Stephen's marriage certificate his father is given as John Hughes, but I'm not convinced that he ever existed!

Sincere thanks again for your much appreciated help!

Well there is a Stephen HUGHES baptised Faversham 1820 son of John and Jane ............. would that fit + John HUGHES marrying Jane CATT at Faversham 1816 (Record Search Pilot again the source) ???

Hello again Gemini,

Sorry - I saw your message first, so I've half-replied to your question!

My Jane Swinyard was born in Faversham in 1796 and died in Faversham in 1869.  Thanks to Casalguidi, I now know that she married John (Sampson) Hughes in 1816 and was born Jane Catt, so she's definitely not the same as your Jane Swinyard after all.  But I still can't understand why Abigail and Katherine Hatch were living with my Jane and her husband William in 1861.  Maybe it's just a complete coincidence and these Hatch sisters are nothing to do with your ancestors... ???

Best wishes,
RromHughes
