Title: 86th Foot Regiment
Post by: neilpms on Sunday 15 August 10 06:22 BST (UK)
Can anybody help me to find the serevice record of somebody who served with the 86th Foot regiment from the 1860's through to the early 1890's
I am looking for William James Markey
1911 census shows he was born in 1845 to Irish parents in Karachi, India, he was married to a Margaret Hillery who was born 1852 in South Africa, Margaret was a British subject so i am assuming her parents were in the forces and stationed in SA
Their children were born in Nova Scotia and The West Indies in the early 1880's
I know Williams Father was James Markey and when William remarried in the 1890's after his 1st wifes death, his fathers occupation was given as a soldier, i am assuming he was aslo in the 86th Foot
I have had no luck on the ususal sites looking for Wiliams birth in 1845 or his marriage to Margaret, i thought all Military marriages and births were recorded, i cannot find any of their childrens birth records either,
would be grateful for some pointers as to how i take this forward
Neil

There's plenty of info about the 86th Regiment on Foot ...
86th (Royal County Down) Regiment of Foot  ... google may be a good starting point  ;D Fingers crossed..

I've asked the Moderators to move this out of the Resources Board and onto the main Armed Forces Board so that others will see your post ...

Hope that's OK

Cheers,  JM

Hi Neil

If it survives it will be on Findmypast. They have published all surviving records for men discharged up to 1900.

FindMyPast also have regimental BMDs online, but they are not complete.
