As I search the census records for my family history I keep dead-ending with Ireland as the place of birt. I also notice that at least half the folks on the census pages in the 1850's and 60's have come from Ireland to work the coalfields of Lanark.
Is there a way to search ship or immigration records to perhaps extend the search back in to Ireland?

Hi
As Scotland & Ireland were both part of the UK there are no immigration records, nor are there passenger lists for domestic ferries.

Check every possible census because occasionally, it will say more than just "Ireland" as place of birth. Also check for Poor Law applications (for financial assistance). If they made any, the records in Scotland will usually give details of the persons parish in Ireland. Finally, if he left a will, you might get a clue from that as it may mention relatives still living in Ireland.
