Title: Kathleen (née Sharman) at Sudbury
Post by: sherlock1207 on Saturday 14 August 10 07:45 BST (UK)
My great grandfather’s brother William Taylor Sharman was born in Swinstead in south Lincolnshire on 18th February 1866. His wife was Elizabeth Ellen (née Styles), and they had three daughters - Hilda, Kathleen (born 1896) and Dorothy (born 1898). Sometime in the 1930s or early 1940s William and his family moved to Essex. We think that he farmed in or near Eight Ash Green near Colchester.  Elizabeth Ellen died in the summer of 1946 aged 88 years. This left Dorothy, the only unmarried daughter, alone with her father. However, we know little more about the life of William Taylor Sharman apart from the contents of a letter dated 1962 from Dorothy at Eight Ash Green. In the letter she referred to her late mother, to Hilda living in London and having three grown-up children and three grandchildren, and to Kathleen living near Sudbury in Suffolk and having two grown-up children but no grandchildren yet. Dorothy was living with and looking after her father, but she stated that William himself was “rather a bent old man” who was capable of walking “only a few steps”. Dorothy wrote of feeling isolated from the rest of our family and wishing both that she had married and that she was “back home”. She referred to William’s ill health with no optimism saying “when you get (to) 96 you cannot expect much”. Dorothy’s fears were indeed justified, as William Taylor Sharman died on 26th April 1962.

I have tried without success to get information about William on the Essex message board. Now I am hoping that someone here will have information about Kathleen at Sudbury. Sadly, however, I don't even know her married name.

Hi

I note that Kathleen's birth recorded Mar.qtr.1896.   A Kathleen Sharman married a John Evans 1921 Stamford, Lincs.

Deaths show a Kathleen Evans b.21/1/1896 d. 1981 Blyth, Suffolk which could be her.

Aside from that, there are too many birth permutations for Evans with mother Sharman (although there is one in Sudbury in 1929?).

Thanks, Annette. I don't know where you found this Kathleen's death (can't get it on FreeBMD), but we might be on to something here. Nor do I know where Blyth is in relation to Sudbury, but I'll go and find an atlas. Much appreciated.

Blyth is a registration district of Suffolk formed in 1935 from districts of Blything, Plomesgate and Hartismere and is in the North/North East of Suffolk.     Covers umpteen villages.

I now know that Kathleen married John Evans in 1921. John Evans became a land agent, but had retired by the early 1960s.

Hi,

There's a bit of a false trail here.  The Kathleen Sharman you are speaking of was most certainly my grandmother.

Her dob was 18/12/1895 (registered in the sub district of Corby the following month).
She was married at Clipsham, Lincs on 14/9/1921 to John Evans.
John died in the summer of 1969.
Kathleen died on 31/7/1985 at Maranx House in Ponders Bridge, Huntingdon (having formerly lived at Hitcham in Suffolk since about 1955 when Grandpa retired from managing Brettenham Park Estate.
