George Anderson is my third great grandfather. he was married to Isabella Beveridge.
I've some information that he may have owned or ran a pub in Linlithgow High Street although his death certificate says he was a Coach Hirer.
Does anyone know where I might obtain info to verify this?

I see that there is a will available for download using the 'cart' system on Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - cost £5.00 for a George Anderson, publican, who died on 23/08/1976 ? possibly your man...
The 9 pages need to be downloaded seperately
ANDERSON GEORGE 26/02/1877 PUBLICAN, LINLITHGOW, D. 23/08/1876 AT LINLITHGOW, INTESTATE LINLITHGOW SHERIFF COURT SC41/53/11 VIEW (£5.00)
(9 pages)

Thanks Steve.
Need to look at that Will to see if I can lay claim to my own pub in Linlithgow.
Does anyone know of any other online sources of info - trade directories? for Linlithgow in that time period?

Hi Alan,
I once saw an old map of Linlithgow from 1840. The Four Mary's and The Black Bit*h in the High Street are the two of the oldest pubs. Don't know about the Swan mind. Will have a look.

Billy,
I've only got seven from census data:
Elizabeth b.1859
Isabella 1860
George 1861
Robert 1862
James 1866
Jane 1869
Janet 1871
Can you give me details of the other two?
How do u search for whole families on www.familysearch.org (http://www.familysearch.org)? I've always found the search function on that site a pain in the proverbial.

I've obtained George Anderson's will - thanks to Steve for the "heids-up" - and it makes interesting reading. I'll try and post details when I get a chance, might be of some interest to other forum users, esp. the various trades in Bo'ness and Linlithgow at that time who owed him money when he died.
The one thing it doesn't give is the name of the pub he ran. That's what I'm after.
His wife Isabella took over the pub when he died.
Census data just says "High Street Linlithgow" for dwelling place.
I've tried WLFH resource centre and nothing in the trade directories around that time (although none for around 1876). Nothing in the Valuation Roll for 1876 either.
Does anyone have any other info that might be of help?
All the best,
AG
