Title: Interpreting Abbreviations on Army Records

This refers to WWII - Can anyone help be interpret the following abbreviations which appear on my father's war record please?
I know that - Lt = Light; AA = Anti-Aircraft; C.M.F. = C(?) Mediterranean Force.  I also know that he served in North Africa and then in Italy - possibly Caserta.  But I need to know what Emb; N, A and  YList and XList mean as I cant find any reference anywhere.

Hi there

I am researching the records of my father and came across this site and your question. He was in the Irish Guards and then commissioned into the Indian Army and his records are a mass of abbreviations. I can tell you that CMF=Central Mediterranean Force, which was (I believe) the main battle group in NA and Italy in 1944 and 1945.

It sounds as your enquiry may be for someone who also saw action in both these areas. My father fought through Italy in the spring offensive of 1945 as part of the CMF. I also have the same letters in his records as you do (X LIst I and X List II CMF)

If you get further answers, I'd also like to know the meaning of some of the abbreviations you mention. (Emb= embarked and STF or STFF means special transport flight)

Regt or Rgt = Regiment [within the Royal Artillery, who embraced all Anti Aircraft units and much else].
Y List was I think the means of taking someone off the strength of his unit while sick or wounded, from which he might or might not be returned to the original unit.  All personnel had to be accounted for somewhere for pay, ratios etc.
I do not know about X List.
Emb probably means embarked.

Y List

Ainslie is correct.

The Y List is composed of non-effectives 1 to 8 sick, detention , leave pending discharge etc but I cannot help with the (e) in the original post.
Nothing on X List.
