G'day all,
I have tried every angle I can think of but I am stuck ... can somebody please help crack this mystery. I need a birth look up on my Grandfather ... I have his DOB but not the exact location or his mothers maiden name or his fathers first name. We know he was a London Cockney and claimed to grow up within Bow Bells ... there is also information that his mother was Irish ... he was also Catholic.
If anybody can help me narrow it down I would be eternally grateful ...
James White b 1st November 1924, London.
Spouse = Phyllis Rose East b 1922
Married Oct 1944, Maldon Essex
Died - April 1963, Colchester Essex.
His siblings were - William, John, Charlie/Charles, Rose - he lost his parents at a very young age.
I can't do any further research on my Grandfather without knowing his Mothers first and second names or his fathers first name ... please help.
Best regards, T.

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat. :)
A copy of your grandfather's marriage certificate should show the name and occupation of his father; using those details you might be able to find the marriage of his parents.
FreeBMD marriage registration:
Phyllis R East DecQ 1944 Maldon 4a 1705
Using those details a copy can be ordered online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates
The cost is £9.25 and usually arrive in 5-7 days.

Hi T, welcome to RootsChat. :D
Firstly, it would be a very good idea to remove your email address, unless you want to have gadzillion spams in your inbox.
Just noticed Nanny Jan there....
You'll get lots of friendly help here.

Back again.
There are a couple of James WHITEs, London area, in the last quarter of 1924 on FreeBMD.
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
One has mother's maiden name JONES, the other has LOVELOCK.

Hi Leonie,
Oops.....missed the email address... :-[
Too busy hunting the marriage registration; it's a recent addition to the site and only a listing for Phyllis.

Thanks to all who have replied here ... :)
I have seen the Lovelock and Jones names before but the problem was the births for those are in December rather than early November ... I had tried the FREEBMD before and it won't give ant results for the month of November which is quite frustrating. My next resort is to try and order his birth cert ... I am not sure if there will be any parental information on the marriage cert since he was apparently orphaned about the age of 4 and raised by his older siblings.
I was hoping somebody might have access to data that might give me a clue on his parents before I make an order on the birth cert ...any help is deeply appreciated.
Best, T

The results you are getting show that the birth was registered in the December quarter of the year (1 October-31 December) which is entirely consistent with a November birth.
Registration was required to take place within 6 weeks of the birth, so (for a 1 November birth) registration may have taken place in November or December - in either case within the December quarter.

AVM,
Wow ... ok, I had not understood that in the past ... I thought I was getting direct hits for the exact DOB - not registration dates.
-
His name at marriage, corresponding to the Phyllis EAST reference, was just James WHITE (no middle name) so the birth with mother's maiden name LOVELOCK isn't a perfect match (shows middle initial of W). I also don't see any WHITE/LOVELOCK births corresponding to the siblings you mention. And Wandsworth, where that James W WHITE birth was registered, is very much the wrong side of London for the Bow Bells :)
Can't see anything good in the East End, though - I think you'll need that marriage certificate.

AVM,
In conversations with my father he states that it may be possible he was born in Ireland if his mother was Irish ... and that he grew up in earshot of Bow Bells ... this is another possibility at this point. Is there a FreeBDM that includes Ireland?
Best.

I don't know anything about Irish research, but this site may help you: http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/find_a_service/bdm/certificates_ie
There is also an Ireland board on Rootschat.
Do you know anything about what happened to James's siblings - marriage, where & when they died etc? Details about them may assist in tracing their births and, indirectly, that of James.
(NB In accordance with Rootschat rules, please don't give any identifying information about anyone who is or may still be alive.)

AVM,
I know very little about the other family members since once James White died, the family lost touch with his siblings. I know some scant details about his brother Bill ( William ) White - who lived in Holborn London ... he was involved in selling Newspapers on Fleet Street. I know that Bill was an elder brother ... I two street locations where he lived in Holborn, but not the house numbers ... I know Bills wifes name and his daughters name. I have no specific dates for Bill however.
Any use?

Possibly useful - details of wife & daughter more useful than addresses.
But given the recency of the dates, I suggest you send me a personal message (PM) rather than posting their details here. You can send a PM by clicking on my username in the left hand column of the page, or the green scroll underneath it.
I'm logging off now but can have a look later if that would help.
Anna :)
