Hi,
I have a John Ross (26) coming out from the Isle of Skye along with his wife Flora (24) and a Catherine Ross (21) in 1853 on the "New Zealand" arriving in Victoria.
I'm trying to find out if there was any births to John and Flora Ross in Victoria and any death registrations for John and Fora, if so I'm hoping for mothers and fathers to be mentioned, (big wish I think though).
I don't know anything about Catherine but she probably was John's sister.
Regards
Gerry

Thanks Cando and Merlin,
I shouldn't be deviating to the Ross family yet until I get my German ancestry sorted out first but the Ross is on my wifes side and today I got some information that a John Ross came out from the Isle of Skye in 1853 into Victoria and he was the brother of Alexander Ross who was one of many who had died on board the Ontario the following year on its way to NSW. Alexander's wife Flora survived along with 3 children with John (15) dying in Quarantine in Sydney.
With the valuable information you have provided I now know John's parents and Flora's parents so I'll be able to do some research back in Skye with the censuses and try and find the correct Ross family, Nicholson family and McDonald family, but there are many families with the same surnames so it will be hard.
Great job with the information you have provided, thanks

Cando and Merlin,
Is there any chance of another Victorian look up please.
I'm looking for a death for a Catherine or Katherine Mackenzie in Victoria maybe late 1800s or early 1900s.
I have Catherine Ross coming out from Skye on the "New Zealander" in 1853 with her brother John she would have been born around 1831.
I think I have a marriage to a John Mackenzie in Victoria in 1857 but I have no details of her death or children if any.
Catherine's parents were John Ross and Margaret McDonald from Kilmuir Inverness-shire.

Thanks Cando,
I found basic information for a Catherine McKenzie burial at Bendigo in 1888 but I don't know if that is her or not.

The Catherine McKenzie who died Bendigo 1888 is not your lady see below:

Gerry have you considered that Catherine and husband may have gone interstate or returned 'home'....only one birth in Vic. Just a thought.

Merlin and Cando,
Thanks for clearing up the Bendigo burial details I think one can pay the trust a small fee for more details and I was considering that but I don't have to go down that path now.
Possibly that they may have moved to NSW, Catherine did have a brother John Ross in Victoria but also a sister in law in Maitland NSW who had lost her husband on the voyage out (ontario 1854).
I would have expected more children being born but maybe not.
I'll check the NSW bdm site.
Thanks again
Regards Gerry
PS: I really should't have got sidetracked onto the Ross side of the family yet but I'm intrigued.

They are my Great Grandparents! I have a full list of every one of their decendants!
? Flora pregnant on trip over on NZ'er? Child died at sea? Eventually settled out of Watchem and son Donald (my grandfather) ran the farm at Sammy's Lake/Massey near Watchem. All buried at Watchem cemetary.
More info if you need it. I am interested in John's parents. Think Floras father was the blacky at Duntulm

Tajrossi3,
Thanks for the reply.
My interest in the Ross family is with John's brother Alexander Ross who sailed on the Ontario in 1852 to NSW with his wife Flora and their 5 children, Mary, John, Ann, Donald & Margaret. Sadly though Alexander died on the voyage and John died in quarantine in Sydney. Flora and the remaining children settled near Maitland NSW.
I believe that John & Alexander Ross's parents were John Ross & Margaret McDonald
I have been trying to sort out the census records for Kilmuir Inverness-Shire and I think that I have Margaret (55) as head of the household at Balmaquen in 1841.
Alexander & Flora Ross were my wifes GGGF & GGGM.
I haven't got much but I'll send you what I have.
Regards

Fantastic - Balmaqueen is correct.
Alexander and his son died before reaching Sydney leaving Flora with 3 children (3 daughters and 4yo Donald). She went to the Hunter Valley River district with youngest Margeret, joined Donald who worked on McKays cattle station at Cooplacurripa..
Margaret married Neil, son of Archibald and Christina McQueen. Settled in lower Clarence where Margarets mum Flora joined them.
My John and Flora were in touch with their Clarence/Barrington relatives.
During WW1 grandsons of John Ross and Archibald McQueen looked up their relatives at Skye. Lindsay Ross took some photos.
There was a reunion of the Alex Ross family held at Gloucester (near Barrington) in July 1991
You probably know most of this stuff
