A friend asked me the other day where in 1852 Collington, Middlesex would have been. I couldn't answer so wondered if anyone here could help.
It was the place of birth for her ancestor (gg grandfather) and it was recorded as such on the 1877 Australian birth certificate of one of his daughters. She has been trying to uncover this for some time so any suggestions or ideas would be wonderful.
Many thanks

Hi Deb,
There is a Collington in East Sussex, looks like it is a suburb of Bexhill these days. Google maps will show it if you put in "Collington Bexhill" as the search terms.
There is also a Collington in Herefordshire.
Neither is in Middlesex, though! I will move your post to the London and Middlesex board where you might get some more local knowledge.
Cheers

Thanks Prue,
I did find the ones you mention in East Sussex and Herefordshire but my friend insists that it was Middlesex and I couldn't convince her otherwise ???
Her ancestor's name was William WILLIAMS which made me wonder if the Herefordshire one may be it but she insists it is London!
Many thanks

It might well say Collington, Middlesex on the certificate, but that's not to say it's correct! He might just have genuinely thought that's where it was.
I hope you get some more answers soon :)

I agree with your sentiments entirely re his place of birth but sometimes it takes a bit of time trying to convince people that all is not as it seems on certificates. ;)
Many thanks and fingers crossed

Hi all
Deb asked me to post the (jpg) extract from the certificate.
Firstly,
so that the people can satisfy themselves that the word really is "Collington".
Secondly,
to ask views on whether the marriage date (24 May) is 1814 or 1874.
To me the clue really is that FxxxBxD shows a marriage for
W.E.W. in q2 Ken 1a 101 in 1874.
But don't let me sway you.

The date is definitely 24 May 1874 :)
And the place definitely is written "Collington" - it's just that there's nowhere (as far as I know) in Middlesex with that name.

A marriage took place by Banns @ St Stephen's Shepherds Bush 24 may 1874 between William Edward Williams age 22 batchelor, labourer, of 45 Southbrook Street, father William Williams, labourer and Jane Ann Barker spinster no occupation 45 Southbrook St, father James Barker, labourer. Both signed, William missed the "Edward" out & had to write it above the rest of his signature. Witnesses Charles Allen & Mary Barker both made their mark.

How about Islington?
I had a look at the 1871 census to see if anyone else was born Collington, Middlesex.
Have a look at William Anthony Mitcheson RG10 / pc 1304 / fo 52 / pg 15
His place of birth is transcribed as Collington but if you look at the image it's Islington.

I see what you mean on the Mitcheson 1871 census record. Certainly is Islington when enlarged.
Thanks Dawn

Thanks Jill, I shall pass that marriage on to her. All the info provided so far helps to enlarge the picture and hopefully my friend reaches a good outcome. I am inclined to believe it could be Islington, just need to convince my friend ;)
