do you want to see his family in the relevant census - ie ID his parents?

This is the only lad in Leics 1878 - 1882 :-

Births Sep 1881   (so he missed the 1881 census)

CRESSWELL  Edward    Barrow S.  7a 172

The Barrow District covered:-

He married in Leicester in 1905:-

CRESSWELL  Edward      Leicester  7a 643
MASON  Laura Madeline     Leicester  7a 643
Palmer  Alice Mary      Leicester  7a 643

This looks like him in 1901 census:

Thanks very much for your prompt reply. I wonder if it is the right Edward, I believe that they had at least two sons Howard and Bernard born approx 1900? Is there any way to check?

prior to about 1911/12, Mothers maiden names weren't shown on the Birth Index entries.

If any of these lads were 'yours', you'd have to seek them out on the 1911 census:-

Births Jun 1909

CRESSWELL  Howard    Leicester  7a 197

Births Jun 1906

Cresswell  Bernard    Barrow S.  7a 160

~~~~~~~~
Births Jun 1907
CRESSWELL  Bernard Thomas     W. Bromwich  6b 841
~~~~~~~~
Births Jun 1909

CRESSWELL  Bernard Hewson     Grimsby  7a 639
