Title: The Stanley House
Post by: Rhonddagirl on Wednesday 11 August 10 17:03 BST (UK)
My Standley line from Norfolk has been traced back to Edward Standley/Stanley born c1500.  There are some researchers who believe this to be Edward Stanley
3rd Earl of Derby who married Dorothy Howard b 1500.  I would be delighted if this were true, but am not convinced! Where do I start to try and find out whether my Edward is this man?  I am a descendant from his son Hamond.

Kind Regards
Nicki

If he is the 3rd Earl of Derby he will have an impeccable pedigree.  When you say you've traced back to Edward Standley/Stanley you must know if its the 3rd Earl, surely?

I'm sceptical about any early records not least because parish registers didn't really get going till the late 1500s and Edward and Stanley are not unusual names.

This gives Edward, 3rd Earl's dates as c.1508-1572.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_of_Derby#Earls_of_Derby.2C_third_Creation_.281485.29

I'm sure there are plenty of other sites about the Earls of Derby if you google, that might help you decide if you are connected or not.

I'd say not - I'm sure if there was an Earl in the family you'd know all about it!

Thanks Jeuel
Yes I agree with you, there is no evidence of Edward and Dorothy having Hamond and no evidence of wealth in my Stanley line so I can safely say they are not my ancestors.  Just glad a got an answer at last.

I have seen your post from several years back.

I believe I am also descended from Hamond Standley via Norfolk.

Elsewhere it claims Hamond was born before his father Edward, 2nd Earl of Derby was married. He was 15-ish years at the time with the mother being 13-ish.

The surname was changed from Stanley to Standley and he seems to have been shipped off to Norfolk.

I cannot find any official records on this.
