My Great uncle emigrated to Canada in 1913, he was down as my grandfathers next of kin during WW1 as being in British Columbia. But I cannot trace him any further in Canada and was wondering if he travelled over the boarder into the United States. His name was William John Wedlock, born 1888 in Surrey, England.
I would be grateful for any bits of information to try and solve his mysterious disappearance.
Thank you

Hello Danuslave.
Are you saying this is the right connection for your family. ? Its just you said in the original posting your William was born in Surrey and this one is Cornwall ???
Regards
Sandra

Hi Sandra
It's not my family - beagle1066 made the original post. :D
I just meant it was great to find something so personal. Sorry for any confusion!

Thank you to everyone who has replied but it does seem that the William Wedlock is not the correct one.
Thanks again but I will keep looking, he must be out there somewhere.

Hello beagle,
Have you tried the Canada Board ? If your William was in British Columbia and was a Canadian Soldier of War, there could be Attestation Papers. These apparrently give alot of information and could be helpful to you if found. ;)
-
Hi Sandra ;D
I did look around Canadian records but I wouldn't say I exhausted all leads. Perhaps someone may be able to find his trail in Canada.
-
Thank you for help. I have posted a message on the Canada board.
Thanks again
Lynne

Apart from William being named as your granfathers next of kin in British Columbia, have you ever found him on a passenger list - you mentioned 1913 ???
-
There is a Wm J Wedlock, born c1888, arriving in 1910. There are two entries: one states port of arrival was Halifax, Nova Scotia, the other states the port was Portland, Maine. (Perhaps it sailed to Portland before arriving at Halifax?) ???
I cannot view further details.

1913 border crossing (Canada to U.S.)
William John Wedlock, age 50?, Coachbuilder?, born St? Austell? ??? Father: Wm. Wedlock. Destination: Chicago.
(Image is difficult to read.)

Well done Lisa - Going to Toronto - Occupation is giving as farming but no other details. ;)
-
Thank you for finding the details, Sandra.
It looks like he didn't stay in Toronto. I checked a couple of Toronto directories and he is not listed. There is a John Wedlock, but he is also in the 1908 directory, so he can't be your William John.

Thank you for all your help.
I do have details of the sea crossing - WJ Wedlock left Liverpool, England on 11th July 1913 on the Empress of Ireland age 19 years occupation - coach builder. The ship was heading for Quebec.
What happened to him between then and his being in British Columbia in 1915 who knows! The address given on my grandfathers military records was c/o post office BC.

Lynne - the date is "wonky" again. He was born in 1888, if that was him he would be 27 years old ???
-
Coachbuilder was mentioned on the bottom of the previous page - he was older and could have been from Cornwall.
-
Think we might have good new on the Canada thread Lisa - the chance of Attestation papers for William Wedlock 1888. Since the UK BMD shows Sept Quarter Registration - the 21 June is a real possiobility of the correct person. ;)

Oh dear, just looked at the Canadian thread and its the wrong connection so we are back to the drawing boards on this one again :(
-
I have been in touch with the Vancouver library who have been very helpful but so far have found no trace of him. I have looked again at the US and have found a possibility - William Wedlock married to Maude living in Chicago in 1920, but am unsure how to go about finding if he is the correct person.
-
He Lynne,
In reply 4 - I put a passport application on - that is the William Wedlock who is married to Maude - its the Cornwall gent ;)
-
Thank you, I will not search any further on that front. Back to the search - he has to be out there somewhere!
