Can anyone tell me (perhaps via a local paper obit) whether Charles Hazell (born 4 Dec 1913), whose death was registered at Gravesend in Oct-Dec 1981, was originally from South Wales? And earned a crust before the war as a professional boxer?
Keeping my fingers firmly crossed ;)

Having obtained his birth cert and confirmed that my Charlie was indeed born on 4/12/1913, I think, given the rarity of the name, I can assume it is indeed the ex-boxer from Pontypridd who died in Gravesend in 1981.
I would still love to know how he ended up in Kent, if anyone out there can help?

There is a Charles Hazell marriage in 1937 in Kent
-
Thanks, Carole. The bride was a Rose L Carter and the marriage was registered at Dartford, which is not too far from Gravesend. But I can't find Rose's death (at least not in that area) so I can't really assume it's my Charlie.
I've written to the Dartford paper to ask if they can check their obits/death notices and/or publish a plea for info, but no response yet.

I did see a Rose Louise/Louisa HAZELL death registration (1993 and Gravesend I think - it was yesterday when I looked - born 1914 the same as a Rose Louisa CARTER in the birth indexes but nothing to say either way about any of it). You could try looking for the marriage in the online parish registers http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/ - not all the Dartford district is there nor will it help if it was a registry office/non-conformist ceremony but certainly worth a look.
I've written to the Dartford paper to ask if they can check their obits/death notices and/or publish a plea for info, but no response yet.
I would suggest libraries are your best bet for obituaries - Dartford or Gravesend depending upon where he lived - the GRO registration districts have changed over the years http://kent.gov.uk/LibrariespublicUI/ - they will do up to 20 minutes I think for free which probably won't be long enough without an exact death date - on reflection, it may have been more useful to get the death cert. to get an exact date and place of death plus the birth details ::)
Casalguidi :)
-
Thanks for the info - Rose actually died in Bexley, it appears - and the links, Casalguidi. I've just tried the parish registers (I wish we had some of the Welsh ones online), but with no joy with the marriage. And there are no burials in the Gravesend ones, so I couldn't go down that road for an exact death date.
The reason I went for the birth cert was to confirm that it was indeed my Charlie Hazell. I'll give the Dartford paper a few days to see if they respond - I only emailed them yesterday - and if there's nothing I might go for the death cert.
Thanks again,
Gareth

Hi Vicky,
Good to hear from you. Welcome to Rootschat.
I will send you a PM (personal message) - it will show at the top of the page and you just click on it to see it - then you can reply the same way. That will avoid boring the general RC members and also enable us to exchange some info which perhaps you might not want to put on a public forum.
Regards, Gareth

Hi Gareth
A Rootschatter usually needs to post three times before they can send and receive personal messages on Rootschat.

Valda

Thanks, Valda, Vicki and I are in contact OK and I'm all set to meet her mother to see pics of Charlie and fill in the gaps ;D
I never realised the "three posts" rule existed. There you are, you learn something every day :)
Anyway, RC has come up trumps yet again. Another brick wall bites the dust :D
Cheers, Gareth

Hi, my names Paul, Charles was my great grandad! Ifs theres any more you would like to know I could put you in contact with my nan (his daughter)
-
Hi Paul,
I was going to reply via PM, but then noticed you were another newcomer to Roostchat (perhaps I ought to get some sort of prize for recruiting new blood ;) ) and, as I learned with Vicki earlierin the thread, you have to have three posts before you qualify for PMs.
Vicki is going to send me some pics, but meanwhile I would love to talk to your nan.
If you post two replies to this (daft, I know, but that's how it works) I will PM you with my email address and you could let me have her phone number via that route, rather than putting it on public display.
Regards, Gareth

I meant to type Rootschat, of course. Though maybe Roostchat would be correct as well, given how many family secrets come home to roost in these searches :D

Hi, Charlie was my uncle and was indeed married to Rosie. They lived in Erith then Belvedere, Kent. I believe some of my cousins have already been in touch with you. I believe he was born after 1913 though as he was my mum's younger brother and she was born in 1923. Charlie also had brothers who boxed, who remained in Pontypridd. Let me know if I can try to find out more for you. Linda
-
Hi Linda,
Sorry to be so late in replying - I've been tied up with other things and hadn't been on Rootschat for a while.
My interest in Charlie (and brother Billy) is to do with a book about boxers from Merthyr and Pontypridd, which is now with the printers (though I could still make minor changes at the proof-reading stage). I know his death was registered in Gravesend, but did he actually live there or was it somewhere nearby?
BTW, I have his birth certificate, so can confirm he was born on 4 Dec 1913. Either your mum was a lot older than she let on :D or there's been a bit of confusion. If you wish (and let me have your address via a PM), I can send you the certificate. It's served its purpose for me and I hate to throw something like that away.
Regards, Gareth

Linda, just noticed that you too are a newcomer to RC, so the same rule applies as to Vicky and Porky earlier in the thread - you will need to make another two posts before you can send a PM - the easiest is to look what Porky did and do something similar ;)

Thankyou Gareth, will do.

Nice one, Linda. Now I await your PM. :)
