Maria Hamilton b abt 1840 in Armagh married Michael Corbett soldier in the 16th Regiment of foot (stationed at Curragh Camp, Co Kildare) in Armagh 1859, witnessed by Archibald Love and Matthew McCoy.
Any one know where the 16th originated from? Did the regiment go to Canada as back up in the American Civil war, where did they go?
Michael died about 1862 and Maria married John Love on 23rd March 1864 in St Mark's Church Armagh.
On their marriage certificate, John was living in Drumadd, a widower, occupation Pensioner, father John Love a Slater by trade (not deceased). Maria, widow, Father William Hamilton occupation Labourer (not deceased) witnessed by Daniel McKinney and Francis Craddock.
Maria and John were living at Barrack Hill when their first child John was born in 1865. Has this address anything to do with the !6th Regiment?
My Great Grandma Ellen Love was born 1873 in the USA, where I do not know. It is a puzzle why Maria was abroad at the time.
Their 3rd child, Maria Love, was born 1877 in Drumadd, so back in Ireland then.
Was John a pensioner due to war injuries? The ages on the marriage certificate just says 'Full' so no clue there. As his Father was still alive at the time, I am thinking John was a youngish man as Maria would be about 24.
In 1891, Maria a widow again, and her children are living in Salford, Lancashire. It came as a suprise to find from this document that Ellen was born in the USA. I feel the answer to where my Great Grandma was born lies somewhere in the history of the Regiment and it's movements.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Most of the queries here have to do with possible Army connections rather than just Armagh or Ireland so I'm going to move this thread to ARMED FORCES board.
Hopefully someone there will be able to give details of the regiment (or suggest where to look).

Does the marriage certificate indicate that both fathers were alive in 1864 or are you assuming so based on absence of 'deceased' written on the certificate?

I can only guess both Father's to be alive at the time, given the information I have on the certificate.
-
Irish certificates often list parents without noting dead fathers as deceased so it's not conclusive.

Thank you Neil, what a quick response. I will compare the dates with my records to see if they give me any more clues.

Her first husband's (Michael Corbett) record would have been destroyed 20 years after his death. However, as John Love was a pensioner you should check Findmypast to see if his army record is online. You can do alphabetical searches. If his record survives it will tell you which regiments he served in.
You will have to ask on the Armagh board if there was a barracks on Barrack Hill. If so he may have been working for the Barrack Department. They mainly employed retired soldiers.
The Depot of the 16th Foot moved from Templemore to Colchester in 1865. They had been there from at least early 1861, so John may have just gone home after his discharge. As regiments did not have permanent depots in this period regiments did not really originate from a specific place.

There were certainly army pensioners living at Barrack Hill in 1911- here's one example:

I hope Samuel's descendants appreciate him giving ages in years and months and specifying he used to serve in the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

Thank you KM1971 for pointing me in the right direction. I did a search on F M Past site and came up with the following.
John Love No 1739 52nd Regiment of Foot.
Joined 19th July 1843 aged 19 in Armagh
Discharged 3rd May 1864 after 20 years service, unfit due to Rheumatism, blind in left eye, impaired vision in right eye
He served 10years 26 days in the East Indies, 3years 120 days in North America, but no dates.
I feel this must be the John Love I am looking for but know nothing about the 52nd regiment or where they were in Armagh.

Also, thanks to agnadowey I did a Google of Barrack Hill, it appears there was Gough Barracks there at the time.
Feel I am getting some where with your help, thanks again.
