Have you pulled the name file for Greening at the Maritime History Archive?  Might give you a clue...

I looked up Greening in Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland, only early instance in Tickle Cove is a Joseph Greening, 1836.

I am interested in the Greenings of Devon although I can only trace my line back to an Edward Greening who married in Kelly in 1775. However I believe the line was descended from either William or Jasper Greening (brothers?) who migrated from Gloucester to North Devon, (Bideford area) in the early 1600s. The name is very common in Gloucestershire.

This couple, and their descendants,  were traders and mariners - more than one was lost at sea - and as early as 1675 there is record of them sailing to and trading in Newfoundland. The forename Joseph is also found in a number of generations.

I know this gives you no answers but may add to your knowledge of the family - there is a strong possibility that they are linked. It will also keep the post current and possibly attract someone else's attention who may be able to add to it.

I too am researching the William Greening b 1775 of Margaret & William, who died in Newfoundland and would be pleased to hear more about your results back to the 1600. The furthest back I am is with William and his descendants. Is Edward who married Kelly, a brother to William? I am particularly interested in your comment that you have documentation of Greenings in NFLD earlier than William as we are Canadians.

Hello
William Greening was baptised at Stoke Damerel 21.9.1777 s of William and Margaret.
The only other possible mentions are a daughter Mary 27.6.1779 to a William and Mary Greeing also at Stoke Damerel and the burial of a infant Magaret Greeing 23.7.1784 at Plymouth St Andrew.
Sorry that's all I can see
