Hi englandphil,

I was passing Lawnswood Cemetery today and called in to see if I could find the grave of Samuel Walsh to photograph for you. The young lady I spoke to was very helpful but I didn't have the date with me and after searching all the sections with no. 3 we drew a blank on the grave.

On my return home I checked the date and phoned Lawnswood. The grave has now been located so when I pass again I will photograph it and post you a copy.

Guiseley is not far from where I live so I will try and photo the grave of John Heigold when I am next in the area.

Regards,
Ian

Hi Phil,

I called in Guiseley Cemetery today and took some photo's for you.

The Cemetery is on Netherfield Road and when you drive through the main gates Sec. A is on your left hand side( there are no section markers) above the first lateral path. Grave 339 is on your left as you walk along the the path 4 rows back from the path.

I will try and do Lawnswood tomorrow or Monday depending on the weather, a bit wet this morning and more rain promised for the coming days.

Hope the photos come through OK as I haven't quite got used to the Windows 7 with the camera yet. If they don't let me know.

Regards, Ian

Hi Phil,

Doesn't look like photos were attached. No response to 'Attach photos' came up but I noticed it says there may be teething problems with the Roots Chat new server. May have to try again when it's sorted.

Cheers, IAN

Hi Englandphil
I am researching my family tree again after a few years and decided to concentrate on my wife's side. Her grandfather was John Heigold who you requested info about.
We have only just discovered his details, and are planning to visit the grave this weekend. We live in Guiseley so not far to walk. I found this thread just by googling 'John Heigold'
My wife, Carla's father, Robert, died a few years ago before we took an interest in family history, so we didn't know much about him.
My wife is really proud and pleased to have found out about her grandfather, and will feel proud to explain to our children this week about how he died when we visit the cemetry, and of course to take a photo
regards
Chris

Chris, Im glad you came across the thread, and the details I have for John Heigold, and also glad to be able to help these men be remembered.  I dont know the circumstances of the death of John, but he is listed as having died on active service which could relate to illness or an accident, possibly a training one, but a death cert would have been issued.

Whilst he was based in kent in 1942, the Bn served in the North East of the country in 1940 / 41, but being a territorial it is possible that he was a pre-war soldier called up full time.

Some further info can be found here

http://www.walberswickww2.co.uk/defence-plan-south-lancashire/

12 Months after his death, the 2/4th Bn was converted to the 13th Parachute Regiment, who dropped into Normandy on D-day, and also provided a lot of men for the Commando forces who where involved in raids at Dieppe and St Nazaire.

Also, thanks to Ian once again for the photographs that he has sent me

Phil

Re John Heigold. He was married in 1938, and died 6 months after my wifes father was born in 1942.
The burning question we may never now find out was did John see his son before he died?

Looking forward to visiting the memorial at the weekend.
My Grandmother and Grandfather are buried in the same cemetery so quite a coincidence that my wifes Grandfather is in the same cemetery!!

Chris, experience tells me that being based in the UK at the time of his childs birth, then he would have been granted a period of leave, if only for 14 hours.  His Army service record should show the periods that he was on leave for as well as all of the details of his Army record.  Sadly there is a charge of £30 for this, and the wait can be months.  But worth the while in a lot of cases.

What a random find this post is. One of John Heigold's sons born in 1941 is my father in law, unfortunately Ray has no recollection of his father being too young.  I've been on a mission to find any photos of John that may exist as Ray has never even seen a picture of him. Chris you're wife is the missing link (Robert/Bob's daughter) that the rest of the family has been wondering about, my wife being her first cousin. Would she have any photos of John at all? Her extended family here in New Zealand would like to connect.

Hi RLee,

Welcome to Rootschat. Chris has only put 2 posts on RC the last one being 5th Jan 2011 when this question first came up.

If he still has same email address a message would have been sent about your message.

I'll try and send a PM to advise you want to contact.

Let's hope,

Thank you Ian, the family are very excited :). Understandably my father in law is almost very closed on the subject, however as a militaria collector myself it does mean a lot to me to locate a photo for him and that's been much harder than I thought.  Kindest regards Rob

Wow, I started this post 11 years ago, and it is still getting attention.

At the early stages I had no information on the cause of Death for John Heigold, but have since obtained copies of the Battalion War Diary.

The Bn where stationed at Capel le Ferne at the time and the entry for the 5th October States the following.

Enemy shelling of Folkstone Harbour during night for about 5 minutes resulted in 2 OR's being and killed and 1 OR being injured.

JOhn would have been one of the two Other ranks mentioned as being killed.  It would appear that the shelling was a long range artillery attack from France.

Hi Phil,

'Wow'....that's what I thought when I happened to notice the name.

It's looking like Chris has changed his email as he has not responded. I did also send him a PM but no reply as yet.

Your information here will no doubt be of use to RLee.

Wow thank you so much guys :-). Along they way I learned that John's father was a prisoner of war during WW1, that was a little surprise in itself and the long range artillery no doubt will be too.
