Hello!
I am trying to find info on Jemima Hodgett who married Edward Smedley.
She was born around 1828 in Wysall, Notts and he was born around 1823 in Keyworth Notts.
They had a daughter, Alice (Lucy Alice?), who was born around 1869.
I can't seem to find anything about their parents. I can't even be sure that I have the correct Alice in my family tree.
I have tried searching here, Ancestry, Family Search Lab and Family Search.org and haven't been able to find anything conclusive. :-\
Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Hi
On the Jemima side:-
Jemima and Edward married in 1850, in or around the Loughborough, Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire area.
I think the date of birth of 1828 is a little off, only by a year or so as 11 year old Jemima is in Keyworth in 1841 with parents and siblings:-
John Hodgett aged 50 (John is down as a Labourer)
Ann Hodgett aged 50
Matthias Hodgett aged 25 (occupation is just down as 3 initials for some reason!)
John Hodgett aged 15
Mary Hodgett aged 15
Jemima Hodgett aged 11
Sarah Hodgett aged 7
Eliza Hodgett aged 5
There's also a 20 year old William Hodgett on the same page of the census but could be another brother, just living elsewhere. There's no specific address given for any of them on the census, just the ?village of Keyworth.

Thank you so much! ;D
Any idea why I might have had a tough time finding them? I really thought Ancestry would turn up a solid lead. :(
-
1851 Jemima seems to be with other family Samuel & Mary Ann Hinde. She is described as sister in law, but could be sister in law to either of them. No Edward in sight though.
1861 - Town Street, Keyworth
(she seems to be gaining years on the census!)
Edward Smedley aged 37, born Wysall, occupation Common Carrier
Jemima Smedley aged 37, born Keyworth, occupation Glove Seamer
Martha Smedley aged 11, born Keyworth, occupation Glove Stitcher
Henry Smedley aged 8, born Keyworth
Edwin Smedley aged 5, born Wysall
William Smedley aged 1, born Wysall
1871 -
(age slightly different again and husband and wife have swapped around their birth places)
Edward Smedley aged 47
Jemima Smedley aged 43
Edwin Smedley aged 13
William Smedley aged 11
Mary Smedley aged 8, born Keyworth
Ruth (S)Medley aged 5, born Lockington, Leics
Alice Smedley aged 2, born Lockington, Leics
John Smedley aged 4months, born Lockington, Leics
The Alice in 1871 is just on the birth index as Alice, not Lucy Alice and was just christened Alice on 11 October 1868 in Lockington.
Just looked at the 1881, where Edward is there (not widowed but Jemima is missing) and Alice is 12 and has been badly transcribed as Lucy. Its definitely Alice and not Lucy (not convinced it looks anything like Lucy).
They all disappear off the face so far in 1891. Do you know when Alice married?

Not sure because 1841 Jemima was there as top of the list when I searched it....I was expecting to have to do a few different spellings or try some unique methods of searching. ;)
I'll see if I can find Edward pre marriage :)

Hi both :)
Aren't Edward and Jemima at HO107/2086 148 13 in 1851, staying with Edward's mother Mary?
:)

Yep agree with that - with the rather unique transcription/spelling of Geimina for Jemima ;D ignore my bit about being someone's sister in law on the 1851. Add another son George, aged 1 and 10 month old Martha. There is a 3 year old George Hodgett, described as "son" - not sure who he belongs to though!
Edward's mother Mary born 1794 in Ratcliffe, Notts. Also a sister for Edward, 29 year old Ann (Edward's twin if the ages are right?, born Wysall)
-
Possibly Edward in 1841 living in Bramcote, Notts:-
Joseph Smedley aged 45, occupation F W Knitter
Mary Smedley aged 45
Edward Smedley aged 20 (but his age could have been rounded up to 20 in 1841)
Richard Smedley aged 15
William Smedley aged 12
Ann Smedley aged 15
Hanah Smedley aged 10
-
The ages for Jemima and Edward seem to be different for each census you go on!
If he is Joseph & Mary's :-
Edward Smedley son of Joseph and Mary christened 2nd February 1821 in Bramcote, Notts
Jemima Hodgett daughter of John and Ann christened 2 May 1830 in Keyworth, Notts. No birth dates though which would clarify as they could be any age when they were christened.
I think Jemima died in 1891, aged 62 which would make a 1829/1830 birthday correct.

Hello all..... :)
Marriage at Wysall - 24th Dec 1850
EDWARD SMEDLEY & JEMIMA HODGETT
Baptisms Keyworth
JEMIMA HODGET - 2nd may 1830 - parents John & Ann - abode Keyworth; fathers occupation Blacksmith
But which is the correct Edward ?
EDWARD SMEDLEY - 27th Sept 1818 - parents Edward & Hannah - abode Wysall - father Labourer
EDWARD SMEDLEY - 14th Dec 1823 - parents William & Mary - abode Wysall - father Labourer
-
the Edward Smedley son of William and Mary sounds more like it..cant find him anywhere obvious in 1841 though...
Edit :- there is a Smedley family in Wysall headed by a William and Mary in 1841, but if Mary was meant to be born in 1794 as per the 1851 census, then the 1841 Mary is 11 years too young. No Edward with them in 1841 though. Will go back and look at the 1851 again just in case Mary's age has been transcribed wrong.
Edit again: Mary's age in 1851 gives her born 1794 so unless the dates are way out between 1841 and 1851, this family possibly isn't the one we are looking for.

Many, many thanks! ;D
So do I have the wrong Edward? :-[
E. and J.'s daughter, Alice (Lucy Alice?) b. 1869 Lockington, Leicestershire married Harry Cook b. 1869 Derbyshire
Alice and Harry are meant to be the parents of my husband's grandfather. ???
I might have got it all wrong! :o LOL!
-
Hello...
It might be better to start again with what you know is a fact....do you know the date of Alice & Harry Cook's marriage and where?
Can you give a census where they are both on to see if we can work it out from there?
-
Going by the latest available census, I'd say we're on the right track with this family.
The marriage cert for Edward and Jemima should clarify who Edward's father was.
:)

Hi, Tati!
How do I find the Marriage cert.? Do you know if there is somewhere I can find it online?
I am American and am researching my husband's English and Welsh ancestors! ::) Enjoying it, but it's hard work having to do it all from over here! :D
Thanks, all! I truly appreciate the help!

I don't know whether Keyworth marriages are online somewhere - google doesn't seem to find anything. Unless someone on here has access to the records, you might have to order the certificate.
FreeBMD www.freebmd.org.uk finds this reference:
December quarter 1850, Loughboro registration district, volume 15 page 263
Edward Smedley to possibly Jemima Hodgett
Certificates can be ordered here (cost is £9.25)

Hi
Don't order the certificate yet. I will check the original marriage entry in a couple of weeks when I next go to the Records Office.

Hi Razzle
If you go onto www.chestnut-blue.com, there is mention of your Jemima Hodgett, and "her parents and siblings and her grandparents"

Hi,
I've beaten Sunflower to it! I was in the Record Office at lunchtime and had a quick look at the marriage register for you - it shows that on 24 December 1850 Edward Smedley, Full age, Bachelor, Labourer, of Wysall, father John Hodgett, Labourer, married Jemima Hodgett, Full age, Spinster, of Wysall, father William Smedley, Labourer.
Edward signed the register, Jemima marked. Witnesses were George Winfield (who marked) and Sarah Garner (who signed).
(The fathers' names have obviously been transposed, but they agree with the info you have below, so Edward was the son of William, not Edward).
Hope this helps.

Hi Skegby
That's one I can cross of my list. Hope you had a good day at the RO.

Thanks all for your messages and replies. Have been away on holiday and have been busy getting ready for the start of the school term.
Maybe now I can get some peace and quiet and a bit of time to really work on the fam. history! :D
