Hi :)
My great Grandfather was called William Charles Bowkett and he was born in 1896 in Townhope, Herefordshire.
I have found a William Bowkett on the 1901 census aged 5, living in Tarrington with his grandfather, other family members on the 1901 census are:
Thomas Bowkett, son aged 29,
Annie Bowkett Daughter, 27,
Lizzie Bowkett, Daughter, 20
Lucy Bowkett, daughter, 18.
I have also found the same William Bowkett on the 1911 census still living with his grandfather at aged 15.
I can find no trace of his mother or father. Could this William Bowkett be my William Charles Bowkett?
I do know that William Charles married Naomi Gertrude Howlett in 1918 in Mutford, Suffolk, had seven children and then left and married a woman in Hyde, Cheshire in 1940 and had another child with her. I have no idea wheather he was divorced or not.
I am quite baffled by this, so any advice would be really appreciated. Would the next step be getting a copy of his birth certificate, would that give me the info I need?
Thanks in advance,
Regards, Beth xx :)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
I suspect he may have been illegitimate so you will need to buy a copy of his birth cert
This is his birth reg

The 1901 entry you mention shows his actual birthplace as Weston Beggard although the family were living in Tarrington
Weston Beggard came under the Hereford Registration District so the 1901 entry is the correct entry

Thanks for the help :) I have just ordered his birth certificate and hopefully it will shed more light on him! I think that is him on the 1901 census, but I just want to be as sure as I can be. My dad only remembers seeing him once and says that no one ever talked about him, so he's a bit of a mystery.
Thanks again for your help,
Beth xx :)

Hi :)
I recieved My Great Grandfathers birth certificate today, There is no fathers name on it, so I think he was illegitimate. He was born on the 21st march 1896 in Weston Beggard. His mother's name was Ada Bowkett, a Domestic servant. His birth was registered on 24th April 1896.
I am almost sure that my great Grandad is the William Charles Bowkett I found on the 1901 census and 1911 census.
I can't help but wonder if his mother was sacked because she got pregnant or could it have been one of those sad stories that the master of the house took advantage of his maids? ( or have I been reading too much victorian fiction ;D!
Thanks for all your help :)
Hugs, Bethxx

Ada was the daughter of the Charles & Ann you found on the 1901 census - she was b 1875 - have a look at the 1881 entry
