Title: Burials at Trealaw Cemetery
Post by: ElmTree on Thursday 05 August 10 10:22 BST (UK)
Hi
I am new to this site so I hope I am posting correctly.
I am looking for burials in Trealaw Cemetery between 1900 and 1920 of any Godfrey family. I believe my grandparents lived here at this time and we have twins unaccounted for. Also looking for any Guy family as this was grandmothers name before she married my grandfather.
Grateful for any help
ElmTree

Hi Elm Tree welcome to Rootschat!

There are around 16 names for Godfrey in the Trealaw burial list.  9 names for Guy (none of Guy are around 1900 - 1920, before and after those years)  Can't see any twins with a quick glance.

Treorchy Library holds the interment records for Trealaw and Treorchy.

Do you have any specific names/dates??

Cas  :)

Hi Cas
Thanks for your reply.
The only information I have is my grandmother Mary Ann Guy left Bristol for South Wales around 1901. She was a widow.with six young children. In 1906 she was thought to be in Pontypridd, Later that year she marries my grandfather Walter Benjamin Godfrey.
On  the 1911 census my grandparents were living in Enid Street, Trealaw.
When living here there are family memories and two of the children from Mary Ann's first marriage settle in Trealaw and marry at the local church.
William James Guy marries Dorothy Morgans in 1914
Henry Victor Guy marries Emily Robina Duffy in 1920.
Henry Victor and his family continue to live in Trealaw after this.
My grandmother remains there also at least until 1914 when she returns back and forth  to Bristol, although keeping her South Wales connections strong.
Family recollections say grandmother had other children including twins. I believe I can account for them up until the 1911 census but after that I am not sure. I have never found any baptisms for any of the family. The last child was born in 1919 in Bristol, by then grandmother was 46 years of age so children after this unlikely. Of course they could have been miscarriages or stillborn. I thought looking at the cemetery in Trealaw would be useful.
Do you have any idea of what coal-pit grand dad may have worked in when living in Enid Street?
So many questions I am sorry. I am going to make a pilgrimage there next week must get my head around things!
With thanks ElmTree

Well hope you have an enjoyable visit.

If you are tracing your FH a visit to Treorchy FH library is a must.. you can view the inter records for Trealaw and check to see if it is your kin, also they have a wealth of history to do with coal.  It is difficult to say which mine he would have been in but Dinas is a possible??

Just to add stillbirths would not be included on the burial list, but the cem does hold a register for stillbirths.

Here are a few sites of interest.

Just rechecked none of the 'Guy' names you mention are on the list.  Maybe they moved to Bristol or to another area of Rhondda?

Found another on local mines

Thanks again Cas
You have been very helpful and I will visit Treorchy F H library, that is well worth knowing. I am looking forward to my trip and even if nothing more positive comes out I will at last visit The Rhondda. Such a place of contrast from the idyllic novels I have read to the reality of the mines and the struggle some of our families had.
I still hear the family horrors but the strength of community life was amazing.
Must look up Treorchy library opening hours, hate to miss it now.
Thanks
ElmTree

Enjoy, many of mine were from the Trealaw area.

Thanks Bigmagicdog, those burials are very useful. There is one that is standing out and I do not want to get my hopes up but today I will send off for the certificate.
This one is Lilian May Godfrey aged 7 months.
I will let you know.
Thanks again ElmTree :)

Hope it's ok to ask a question on this site?

Is someone able to look up burials for the surname of Strong buried at Trewlaw?
I am told there should be at least a Walter and Catherine - and hopeful for more too!
Many thanks

Hi Brian,
Many thanks, yes that is one of my families.
Do you have any exact death dates for them?

I'm also looking for an Albert Strong with wife Maria.
Does that show anywhere on your records?
