Title: Word, jpeg,or tiff? Completed. Thank you.
Post by: Glenpenny on Wednesday 04 August 10 09:08 BST (UK)
I've got myself into a bit of a mess so would appreciate some advice.

I've been downloading pages from the Gales newspaper site which are in pdf format and are huge files.  Am I better converting the bits I need from these pages to Word, tiff or jpeg format?  The tiff and jpeg are much smaller files but harder to read.  The Word files are larger (over 1 meg) but clearer.

a TIFF file should be no harder to read than the original, nor should a JPEG unless it is heavily compressed.

However, I have noticed that when copying from PDFs you should make sure the view setting is zoomed to 100%

Hope it helps.  :)

I Know this might sound silly, but have you got a mouse with a scroll wheel??
if so, find the page that you want and then hold ctrl button down and at the same time scroll the wheel on your mouse it will enlarge or shrink depending on which way you turn it.

Thank you for the tip Mike.  It works!  I'm something of a duffer when it comes to pdf files, so it's much appreciated.

Kangkid:  It isn't silly at all.  I do know how the scroll works but you weren't to know that.  The problem was that the more I enlarged the images the more indistinct they got.  I've got around 40 of them to work through so it's going to take me some time.......

Thanks, Glenys

Kangkid, deffinately not silly,.

I have a scroll mouse, I've used a computer for years, even taught computing but have never come across that tip before.  It even works on this rootschat page.

Thank you.

Hi Glenys

When you've found the page you want on Gale, instead of clicking on PDF, click on Article, scroll down to Standard Article Print, When it opens (get rid of any printer pane that opens) right click on the article & select Save Image As (I'm using Firefox, the wording might vary slightly in another browser)
Then you can open it in any graphics program & convert to jpeg or whatever format you want.
It does mean searching again, but it might be quicker & easier in the long run to start again :)

Hope that helps

Betty

Adobe Reader & Foxit have a snapshot tool, that allows you to select and copy part of what is on screen and save it as an image file in  a graphics program (or into Word). I find it very useful.
If you can't see it along the top in Adobe Reader, go to View-Toolbars-More Tools, and scroll down until you come to it. It's on the Select & Zoom toolbar.
