Title: RAF WW2 Service Records
Post by: dark blue on Tuesday 03 August 10 12:25 BST (UK)
I have a copy of my late father's RAF WW2 service record and need some help in identifying some of the entries.

In "Reason" Column : Letters H (think this may be "holding"), HH, X and F.  The X is shown adjacent to Unit entered as 21 A.D. which corrresponds with his service in France.
Reference is made to "No. 2 Mobile High Speed W/T Unit" - any info on this unit would be appreciated.

Later service is with 80 (s) Wing and then a unit designated "2 Signals Depot" at locations Symington, Lerwick and Aberdeen (twice). Any info on the latter unit would be appreciated.

:) I am trying to find out about me fathers RAF WW2 service record. So far I seem to be at a brick wall. He died in 1947 when I was just 11 so I really don't know much. I know he was LAC and served in the middle east but not much more. Can anyone point me in the right direction. National archives seem to be a waste of time! Keith

Hi Keith,

I obtained my father's RAF Service Record from RAF Disclosures at Cranwell. If you have not tried this approach go to the following site and follow the various links given to download the forms required and find the full address details at Cranwell.

http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/AboutDefence/WhatWeDo/Personnel/ServiceRecords/MakingARequestForInformationHeldOnThePersonnelRecordsOfDeceasedServicePersonnel.htm

There is a £30 charge.

I received two pages which contain unit and movement date info. There are many abbreviations on the record and I still not manged to obtain full details of the meanings of some of these.

Regards - Keith A.
