Hi
Can I please ask for assisstance in repairing this lovely old photograph of a local milkman going about his business.
Thanks in advance
Roy

Hi Roy
Do you have any idea when this was? My maternal grandad (who died a few months before I was born in 1945) used to deliver things with a horse & cart. Variously bread, coal & milk, but not all at the same time :D
Grandad used to come home in the middle of the day for his dinner and the horse would be outside with a nose bag. Mum remembered being allowed to sit on the horse when she was little and always described it as 'like sitting across the kitchen table'

One with texture and sepia tone

Hi Linda
If you look closely at the cart you will see the wording BRIT; the cart belonged to the Jones family of Brithdir who delivered fresh milk daily. The young boy holding the reins was killed in action in WW1.

Hi Tony
Many thanks for the attempt; certainly better than my effort. "beggars can't be choses" I know but if possible I would like it to be a little sharper.

Thanks Terry
I appreciate your efforts and Tony's for attempting to salvage this image.
Best regards to both, Roy

My software is only showing scanned at 72dpi. Is this what everyone else has got?

My system seems to think 96dpi, but I might not be reading the right thing. A bit new to digital photo stuff :-\

The photograph was scanned at 600dpi but unfortunately I had to down size in order to attach the said photo to the Roots Chat site

I'm getting 96 on one of my programs an 72 on the other three....
Guess it's 72 then...........
Good pic though, I don't do horses, so I won't colour.... but I do love a good challenge, so I'll have a dab at a restore....

And one from me too..
What a relief to see your wonderful restores Polldoll,
I have been looking for the 'nags' front legs, but if you cannot see them they must be hidden! ::)
So many wonderful restores to such a lovely picture.
I used to ride in a trap like that, so this picture evokes some lovely memories for me.

Perhaps it's a centaur?

Perhaps it's a centaur?
With a passion for milk shakes maybe .... ;D ;D I did look and there is virtually no sign of the horses front legs ;) ...just a tad by Milkman's left knee and a bit of hoof below the milk churn...
-
But you can seee the shadow of her front legs, does that prove she did have front legs? :D
-
Well spotted!

Maybe he belonged to Hopolong Cassidy ;D

I've got a problem with this one ???
It's the shadows, they don't seem right.
To have shadows like that, am I right to say that the sun would have to be very bright... also to go at that angle, it would be pretty low down...
So if it was bright and low down, it would surely make a bit of shadow from the houses on the other side of the street... unless of course it was open ground and no houses that side...
Could it be artificial lighting?
Just wondering, that's all.

My thoughts exactly Paula,
There has to be open ground to have shadows like that.

Probably the Flash !! ;D

Ah yes, that explains it.

I have a choice, over work it, or go cross eyed...
I think it's time to quit :D

Lovely Job Paula,
I still have a lot to do on mine, eyes went wonky! Watch this space!
This is a very skinny horse, I can see his ribs, legs are skinny too, poor chap :-\

Hi Paula
Gosh, did I start something here; ::) just as many remarks about the poor legless horse as the many attempts and examples of a repaired photo. I'm truly amazed at the pic you ended up with, there is so much detail in the cart. I suggest the man leading the horse is probable Tom Jones the name on the cart. The young lad, sadly was killed in action during WW1.
Thank you so much for all the work you obviously done to produce this detailed image.

Glad you like it Roy. It was difficult, but I managed to get something out of it in the end.
Sad about the little feller, there were so many.....

Hi Rabbit
Don't you just like the old photos; usually we moan 'if only they had written names' etc, etc, on the back, here we have "Fresh Milk Daily", "T [Thomas] Jones", "Brith [Brithdir]" and I think I can see "Stop" maybe "and Buy One" is on the other side of the cart. Plenty of info for family history purposes.
Thanks for your efforts and time and kindness in producing such fine reminders of the past.

Hi Roy,
Cracking picture, I think that this is an old pony. He has a rough coat which I have left like that on purpose, a lump on his fetlock, [Off hind] But he looks in good nick for his age. The only wording I could see on the side of the trap, was Fresh Milk Daily.
I think it is a lovely picture. Thank you for sharing it.

I agree Rabbit, it's a lovely photo and deserves to be preserved.
Well done with your attempt, another good one.

A black & white rotated to be vertical and cleaned :)
Funny photograph as it looks if the horse has no front legs ! !
-
..... and a sepia version for you.

I am so glad the images I posted have given pleasure to all who carried out repair and restoration work. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all who kindly helped and endeavoured to restore the lovely old picture of Thomas Jones on his daily milk round. Your kind comments are gratefully received and I have had just as much pleasure seeing the images develop.
Regards to all

does anyone know if the name of (FRY) in shop window, is actually the name of the shop
-
I wouldn't think so, I reckon it might be an advert for Fry's Chocolate.

If you look closely I think that it is FRY'S. It was a firm that made chocolate way back in the 60's/70's Very good it was too/
The Company got taken over I think.

Hi Rabbit, looks like we both posted the same information at the same time.
Great minds think alike 8)

Hi Paula,
I said rude words when I tried to post, you stopped me,
Someone has posted would you like to revise etc. ::)
I really laughed when I saw your post.
I had to agree with great minds!! 8)
I was going to say the same thing,
but not at that time of night I thought.
I remembered later that Fry's chocolate was still going strong in the 70's,
my Mum ran the village PO, we sold it there.
Thankfully by the time I thought of that, I was in bed.

Hi Phil
I guess you would know the store is Roffi's Italian Shop, at least in our time but prior to the Roffi family arriving from Bardi this was the local Temperance store, you can see the wording along the top of photo
I think you will find the 'Frys' is an advertisment for Fry's Chocolate.
