Title: help needed - Thomas Galloway
Post by: lisabyrne on Sunday 01 August 10 10:18 BST (UK)
I am looking for THomas Galloway

he was born c1821 Gallatown, fife
married 1844 Dysart. to Jane Hutton.

but i cant find his birth or parents.

this is what i have on him:

IGI Births Extracted - in Dysart, parents: Thomas GALLOWAY & Jane HUTTON
Thomas GALLOWAY 14 Oct 1847
James GALLOWAY 28 Jan 1852
William Douglass GALLAWAY 11 Jan 1850 (may have died before 1851 Census?)

1851: County Road East Side - Gallatown, Dysart, Fife
Head: Thomas GALLOWAY jnr, 30, Hand Loom Weaver Linen, b Gallatown
Wife: Jane GALLOWAY 30, b Wemyss Fife
Son: Thomas GALLOWAY 3, b Gallatown

Thomas Snr must have died btw 1851 and 1858; his widow remarried:
IGI MARRIAGE Extracted:
William MITCHELL and Jane HUTTON 10 May 1858, Kirkcaldy

i also have the sons marriage cert if thats any help.
thanks
lisa

The fact that he is shown as 'jnr.' would indicate his father was also a Thomas and indeed, on the same page in 1851 is:

Thomas Galloway    54       Hand Loom Weaver     b. Dysart
Elizabeth Galloway  54                                                 ditto
Isabella Galloway    27                                                  ditto
Marjory Galloway     21                                                  ditto

(Thomas junior also a Hand Loom Weaver).

There are submitted entries on IGI for marriage of Thomas Galloway to Elizabeth Fife (Fyfe) 23/4/1820 Dysart.    The on-line coverage for Dysart is not good and I cannot find their 2 daughters baptisms either.

I am sure this is them. I have searched for births for Thomas 1821 & thomas c1794 but found nothing. the marriage to elizabeth fife/fyfe just says they married, no other details.

do u know anything about 1841 census. did they round up their ages?

I found this on SP but dont have enough credits to access the full census:

Thomas Galloway age 20 in Dysart
Thomas Galloway age 40 also in Dysart

Ages in 1841 were rounded down for people over 15 i.e. someone shown as 40 could be born anywhere between 1797 and 1801.

I don't have any credits left on SP either but I can view a transcript on Ancestry.

1841 - West Gallatown, Old Pattery, Dalserf, Fife

Thomas Galloway   40        Linen H.L.W.    born Fife
Elizabeth Fyfe         40        Linen H.L.W.    ditto
Thomas Galloway    20       Linen H.L.W.     ditto
Isabella Galloway    15       Linen H.L.W.     ditto
Alcey (?) Galloway    15      Linen H.L.W.     ditto
May Galloway 12                Linen H.L.W.     ditto

(Wive's are often shown by their maiden name in Scotland - guessing May is the Marjory in 1851).

any idea how i find out which birth is his?

i have no idea of mothers maiden name, no clues on marriage, no relatives living with them that i can see with different name, no thomas's born dysart. I wonder if i found the childrens births if the maiden name might be a middle name !/.?

any ideas appreciated
-thanks

Thomas senior was still alive in 1861 and can't find him in 1871 so looks like he probably died between 1861 and 1871.

Your only resource is to find and view his death certificate as this will list his parents names (Scottish certificates give lots of information unlike English ones) and hopefully enable you to locate his parents marriage.   Looks like more credits needed for SP!

Eva

Why don't you scan the record, crop to the illegible section(2) and attach it here, where someone will be able to decipher it for Lisa  :)
